Is the GM 3800 an unkillable engine?

How's the fuel economy?

Sound?

Does it respond well to bolt ons?

Power?

Aftermarket?

I'm thinking of swapping a 3800 into my car.
>>
>>14009908
No, I can kill it.
>>
Ya my buddy ran one w/o coolant for a week just to prove a point. Didn't miss a beat.
>>
>>14009908
No, my friend spun a bearing on his leaving the insurance office after be bought his firebird.
>>
>>14009908
It's just a 350 with two cylinders chipped off.
>>
>>14009923
*chopped
>>
>>14009908
Its indestructible but thats about all its got going for it. The same thing could be said about most 90s GM products.
>power
They mostly put them in old people cars
>>
>>14009908
We had one in an Oldsmobile eightyeight that had 235k miles on it when we sold it, the engine was the best part of that vehicle it ran smooth used very little oil even then.
>>
>>14009923
Isn't that the 4.3 v6? I've never heard That about the 3800 would be cool though.
>>
tbqh i think im the only one who likes the sound of the 3800 series 2

Is the GM 3800 an unkillable engine?
>Bulletproof
How's the fuel economy?
>Teens. Maybe 20 on the highway at 55mph.
Sound?
>Shit, regardless of mods. Droney V6 whine.
Does it respond well to bolt ons?
>Some tripfag in here has a Trans Am V6 w/ cam, exhuast, stall... Still slow as shit probs, but it's been done.
Power?
>Maybe 200HP at the crank stock. Has factory supercharger applications (an amazing 40HP boost) so probably responds well to FI.
Aftermarket?
>An outdated, workhorse motor? Not really... Custom or fab... Lots of donor parts, and like I mentioned the factory supercharger.

Drove a 3800 4th gen for 3 months before I had to get an LS1 SS.

A 5.3 truck "LS" V8 motor would be a smooth 300HP, sound great, respond well to mods, and have a huge aftermarket.

$500 an afternoon

I love the 3800. I very easy engine to pull/rebuild. My 3800 L26 had 230,000 miles on it before I started modding. All I've "needed" to replace was a power steering pump, water pump gasket, and lower intake manifold gaskets. ZZPerformance, Intense Racing, and W Body Store have a lot of aftermarket parts from full aluminum heads to headers, cams, etc. I have Bully-Flo Stage 4 ported/polished/gasket matched heads with Manley severe duty stainless oversized valves, ZZP front and rear stainless powerlogs, ZZP stainless high flow cat'd downpipe, ported/polished/gasket matched lower intake, an HV3 (high velocity) plenum insert to replace the factory runners, 140lb springs, titanium retainers, Yella Terra 1.84 aluminum roller rockers with lightweight pushrods, double roller timing chain with machines oil pump cover, GM LS7 lifters. I'm pushing 300 hp on 87 octane and 30mpg highway. My car is prepped for a turbo setup once my bank account and transmission are prepped haha. Then I'm looking to push 400+.

No, it's a Buick 300 with 2 cylinders lopped off, it's been around longer than the 350 in some form or another.

>>14009982
>no aftermarket
What is the Grand National. Tons of performance mods available. Also very common engines for Jeeps

You were doing well until you got to the aftermarket support.

The 3800 has quite a bit of support. The engine responds well to forced induction because nothing else will make a big difference. Making power period is all about airflow. And no matter what ya do, 3800 heads flow like shit. A set of GM 3400 V6 heads. will outflow them.

3800 is still shit though/.
>>
>>14009982
It responds really well to super charger, a s/c upgrade and some supporting mods can net you 400hp on a stock block
>>
>>14012382
still sounds like shit.

Who gives a shit. As long as it performs it could sounds like bunny rabbits and baby farts for all i care.

**TAKE NOTE, I'M REFERENCING A SERIES 2 S/C**

>Unkillable
2 things will survive the bomb: cockroaches and 3800's

>Fuel Economey
17 MPG'S ON PREMIUM, BABY

>Sound
Would highly recommend a resonator delete on stock mufflers. Noticeable improvement in sound.

>bolt-ons
There's all sorts of shit you can bolt on and people do it all the time, but be wary of that trans, it's only able to handle stock power. So if you're serious about it build that trans first. (It's the reason mine's still stock, too much of a jew to pay for that)

>power
It's got plenty of torque throughout the rev range, but to me it feels a little lacking at the top end, but not by much. I've beaten a car in a straight-line drag that was supposed to have 10 more HP than me, so the torque does come into play.

>aftermarket
Outrageous. People have been modding these things left and right because of their similarity to the original V6 that could. People have made dragsters out of these engines on factory blocks.
>>
>>14012817
I have a series 3 with 170k miles and agree with this. Only difference between the two is the series 3 makes 20 more hp due to the gen v s/c (knocks more though) and that the s3 replaces some plastic stuff with aluminum.

Great, great engine

It has no top end. That's why you go 60* V

I had a GTP. That automatic did what it wanted regardless of where I put the shifter.

Pic related. I let my sister borrow it once.
