What trends do you expect for the future of automotive design?

I want to believe complex headlight shapes and chrome trimmed windows will be the norm throughout the next decades, but you never know.

What I hope for is a more widespread taxation based on weight and size instead of arbitrary bullshit like displacement so that car makers would be motivated to develop materials in order to keep cars small and functional and still safe instead of making them fortresses on wheels. What will be probably get instead is more safety bloat and mandated gadgets until city cars weigh two tons.
>>
>>14003473
man
do you remember sub compact cars?
sub 1 ton RWD cars?
what happened man
those cars still had pretty good crash safety ratings
i dont get it
>>
>>14003481
Feelfags got together and said they were wayyy to dangerous and it'll save lives so no we are required to have high beltlines, more heavy airbags, and other safety devices because of regulations. It's also why cars like the dodge dart are 20k new instead of 13-15k for the same car.
>>
There is no way the car industry is going to stay as it is progressing forever. Eventually the progressive/safety/nanny/electronic everything control stuff will start to get pushed too far and will die off. Then all will be right with the world again.
>>
>>14003613
is there an equivalent we can point to where everyone started pushing towards safety?
I'd love to read a piece on automobile history and it's progress from a design standpoint starting from the 1920s to now
>>
>>14003613
lol no it wont die off

thats just extremely wishful thinking on your part

>>14003619
>is there an equivalent we can point to where everyone started pushing towards safety?

since the invention of the car Id say people were looking to make cars safer

crash testing seatbelts and all that came about in the 30s

weird how belts werent required until the 60s tho at least in the US
>>
>>14003619
I'd say it was in the early 2000's that the pillars got fat, front ends got square, and doors got massively wide because rollover protection and muh safety. For example, look at a 1990s toyota supra. Sleek, clean and aerodynamic shape, without angry face and big fat pillars blocking the view.
Now look at a 2015 camaro. Big fat pillars, muh angry face, and unnecessarily wide and bulky body. If you sit in one, you may have about 2 inches of visibility, and that's it.
No wonder they need plenty of protection when you can't see out the damn car.

If you want another example, since the camaro is such an exxagerated car, look at the 2015 toyota corolla, or pretty much any modern car: Weird faces, sharp corners everywhere fucking up aerodynamics, and most of all, big fat front ends that look like trucks, because pedestrian safety.

I have no interest in cars of the future. We are living in what will be known as the dark ages of car culture. Any car from this time period will be shunned because of all the retarded touch screens.

Touch screens will be viewed the same way we view cart phones now.
>>
>>14003702
Most things about modern car culture will be ridiculed in the future. But really, every time period has had dumb trends within the car industry, especially in the after market stuff. In the early 2000s for example, there was the "fast and furious" culture breeding ugly rice boxes left and right. Today we have stance, which will soon go out of style and become an object of ridicule. Essencially, anything car related that isn't practical will eventually go out of style and be ridiculed and mocked, be it stock or not.

>Any car from this time period will be shunned because of all the retarded touch screens.

I highly doubt it

just because youre a pleb who likes 80s shitbox interiors doesnt mean the rest of the world is like you
>>
>>14003710
Why would you want a touchscreen menu with a billion different options so you can focus on everything except for the road?

I doubt touch screens will be seen as the biggest problem with today's cars.
>>
>>14003722
Me neither but it'll definitely be an issue. The electronic tail gates and sidestep bars will be a nightmare in the future.

because fooling with knobs buttons and switches dont take your focus away

I think infotainment is a great step in putting everything in one package to reduce clutter and just have one clean interface

its one of the greatest things about Tesla

Well yeah, there's always exceptions. But look at the camaro (or any modern "muscle" car) front end, and look at most modern cars like the Ford Focus. Big gaping mouths at the front, and square flat ended noses creating drag and air resistance.

I like to hope that with gas prices going down, V8's and V6's will come back into mainstream popularity instead of holding on for dear life in Musclecars that themselves are slowly fading into the past.

I remember the days when every sedan was either a V8 or a V6. it wasnt that long ago.

- High beltlines
- Low roofs and subsequently visibility
- Ugly overly complex curves along the body to show off manufacturing advances
- Audi-esque DRL's on everything
- Thinner headlights
- More organic shapes
- Smaller regulation mirrors thanks to backup cameras
- Multitude of experimental and nontraditional cars that are in-between categories that will likely fail as one-offs

I think pic related might be cool, sort of like a 21st century version of pop-up lights, that streamline the lights into the body. Probably won't happen. Would be GOAT if someone did this over a pop-up delete/fixed lights on like a C5.
