the stainless steel trim *can* be done tastefully, it just requires some work.

But in this case, with the #113 Metallic Green, it looks much, MUCH better with the trim blacked out.

Here's a pretteh video of that car. Shit-tier music, though.

Awww sheeeeit, a new H0t Wheels (fucking m00t set the spam filter to block the full HW name...) car.

It's a ZG Fairlady 260Z with a Hakosuka rear end, just like Jun Imai's KAIDOHOUSE race car.

So, be on the look out at your local walmarts, targets, rite-aids, and walgreens! (and anywhere else that sells HW's, I guess)

my favorite aspect?
Proper. Sized. Wheels.
The normal 240Z casting has it where the rear wheels are redonculiously sized compared to the fronts. This is actually normal sized.

Yes, Pertronix is a good manufacturer and that is a great kit to convert your Z.

With that said, I'd shop around for a better deal since thezstore is the highest priced for basically everything. You can get that same kit for around $90 if you shop around.

You can get the whole shebang off Amazon for about 2/3 the price. That said, make absolutely sure that your core distributor is in good shape. If the bearings are toast, your timing will be shit.
Also, use the 1.5-ohm coil and keep the resistor. It'll save a lot of headaches.

I need to make a choice... I currently own a 78 280z that I bought last year but have not registered due to some tricky import laws and fee's. I figure I need to put about $2000 into the car to get it where I want it before paint... I paid $4800 cad for it and it is from California so very little rust. Do i invest into my 280z or flip it and try to find a nice series 1 240z that I will keep for a long time? I would like to do this for under $8000 and I know that with enough patience I can find a 70-71 240z. Thoughts anon?
>>
>>14015435
>I would like to do this for under $8000
under $8,000 USD complete, as in finished project? Or $8,000 USD for a project car, without any work? Because Series 1 Z's are getting harder and harder to find.

>>
>>14015435

Correct. It was purchased last Saturday in Pratt KS
>>
>>14020243
Oh pff, forgot about that.
How is Kansas for rust, though? Here in Washington it's fucking ridiculous since every Z has sat for at least five years at some point in its life. For $10k-ish you'll get a complete, "restored" car but there's absolutely no guarantee that it's rust-free. And that's not even for a restored Series 1. As of yesterday I've only ever seen one S1 for sale. It was rustier than my '71, gutted, and didn't run. The guy was asking $3,500.

I work for a guy who knows a lot of guys and I had a shot at an S1 parts car for $150 but it was sold the week before I called him.
>>
>>14020310
this is where you do this magical thing called "drive".

Smart assness aside, we have some decent S1's here in Nor-Cal. And if you're willing to weld, there are some really inexpensive ones in Siskiyou County (near Oregon border)
>>
>>14020310

That's the thing, I've been searching for Z's for months now and they've all been garbage. But this one is pristine, the only spot of rust on it was a little bit on the roof seam that I've already worked out. Floor pan and frame rails are spotless and original, thing must have been garage kept its whole life. I'd get pictures for you but it's a bit dark outside for that
>>
>>14020328
Unless it's being given away, I can't justify crossing 2 1/2 states to buy a car, even a S1.
>>
>>14020379
Well then you're probably not gonna get an S1 dude
>>
>>14020444

8=================D
>>
>>14020831
Really depends on where you live. If road salt is a thing, a decent 240 is gonna be pretty hard to find. Overall cost will largely depend on how much work you do yourself and what parts you use. For example, converting to electronic ignition can run anywhere from $50 to $500 depending on if you use a junkyard 280 distributor or buy a brand new Unilite and MSD controller and such.
If you decide get it patched at a body shop, you'd better prepare your anus. For that reason alone I'm going to find a way to do my floor pans and various other patching myself come hell or high water, even if it means buying a shitty HF welder.
>>
>>14020857
That body kit is atrocious, farthest ill go is simple zg flares and front lip
>>
>>14020474
....are you simple, or something? A '71 (generally) is a series-1 vehicle.
>>
>>14020831
Basically what >>14020930 said. If you want to financially survive owning an S30, you learn to do things like weld, paint, sew, solder, fabricate, etc.
>>
>>14021051
Built 7/71. I like to call them Series 1.5, Series 1 on the inside, Series 2 on the outside. I've had it for a year and work in a shop that specializes in Z cars, I'd like to think I've learned a thing or two.
>>
>>14021111
so the last month that it could legally be called a '71. Okay, fine: series 1.5.

Technically speaking, in the collecting world, that would still be considered a series 1. But if you want the special snowflake series 1 exterior, you're going to have to pay a shit load.
>>

>>14021229
>But I'm also sort of rooting that you'll be able to save your Z
Totally dude. There's really not that many problems, as most of the rust is on panels that can be replaced. It's just the framerails that are gonna be the most expensive to repair. And the hatch.

Good books?
Assuming you're going poor fag on this (welcome to the club), you're gonna want six books:

1. Haynes repair manual for the S30
2. Chilton's repair manual for the S30
3. Clymer's repair manual for the S30
4. "How to Restore Your Datsun Z"
5. "How to Rebuild Your Nissan/Datsun OHC Engine"
6. "How to Modify Your Nissan and Datsun OHC Engine"

Those books will guide your steps and help you save money.

Oh, and download all the pertinent factory service manuals here for free:

It's this thing constantly jumping off of it's little terminals. Probably due to the retard levels of resistance throughout the electrical system.

It's got one more time to do that shit before I JB weld it on.

>>13991764
is a 240 easy to work mechanically? there's a 240 near me that's in a pretty sad state and i've been thinking of offering the guy for it but don't know if it's worth.
>>
>>14043638
If you have to ask, it's way outside your comfort zone. They're mechanically and electrically very simple but there is ALWAYS rust and if you can't patch it yourself you're going to be out a lot of money.
>>
>>14043671
is rust easy to patch? how do you even go about removing rust?
>>
>>14043696
Step 1: Cut out rusty spot with a 1'' buffer zone of good metal.
Step 2: Fabricate patch panel out of new steel.
Step 3: Weld new panel in.
Step 4: Grind welds flush.
Step 5: Paint (which you should also learn to do yourself).

Guys how's it like DDing a Datsun?

I want to sell my chebrolet s10 and buy a Z. I already drop 40 a week on a tank with consistent driving.

I honestly hate/love this thing with its slush box. Everything is going wrong on it(that isn't the engine surprisingly)

But I'd rather have something I enjoy driving
>>
I bought an insanely fantastic condition 280z as my first car. I was the third owner, and it had full documentation. I live in NJ, and basically after living with it for a few months, I decided it had to go, and passed it onto another older gent, and his son who was a Z enthusiast. Even though it was glorious, I knew I had to let it go, and buy one when I was older and had a reliable DD. Spring and fall days when its 50-70 degrees make me yearn to take my Z around the twisties again. I swear I'll buy another one soon.
>>
>>14052048
A 280 will be the most reliable and easiest to find.
There are a small handful of reliability upgrade you'll want to make, though
-Headlight and parking light relay circuits (you'll have to make them yourself for the 260/280, unfortunately)
-Wiper motor upgrade (EG Civic wiper motor)
-Blower motor upgrade (EF Civic blower motor/cage)
-280ZX alternator
-1G Kia Sportage door stripping, assuming yours is dry-rotted to shit
All of these can be had from a junkyard for less than $100 total
L-Jet is dirt simple and easy enough to find parts for since it was used on literally everything for about 20 years.
Reproduction parts will be expensive and original parts will make you shit your pants, especially the plastic and electrical parts. Go look for a new headlight switch, I dare you.
Craigslist and Ebay will be the way to go for everything. Ebay is better for small things that can be tinkered with (locks, switches, gauges, etc.) but any and all body parts should be bought and inspected in person. There WILL be rust that a photograph just won't cover.

On the positive side, the driving experience is fantastic and the community is extremely friendly and helpful. Find a forum you like and lurk the shit out of it, ten people have already had your problem and fixed it.

if you're stressed to pay $40 a week for gas, driving a Datsun won't work. It'll cost either a lot of money or time; if you have a lot of either, you might be able to make it work.

just buy a Precision car seal kit; it replaces aaaaall the seals: doors, windows, hatch, hinge bushing shit, etc. Great price.

As far as driving, it's awesome.

But gas...I paid $15 for less than half a tank. My tank is 17.2 gallons. Let that sink in. As an upside, however, I get around 16 mpg.

If you think you can do, go for that shit. But don't push yourself.
>>
>>14053409
I specifically mentioned the Sportage door seals because reproduction door seals are too tight 99% of the time. I've seen more than one window shatter from having to slam the door on them.

I'm not worried about wrenching, I feel I can handle it, I've had to learn quick with my truck. I'm just afraid of being left stranded out in the rain. And more to think of it, it getting stolen
>>
>>14051848
Dutch ancestors eh? Good on you, that shit is delicious.

I lied about the VAT. The figure is 6% instead of 30%, but that's a game changer. Too bad I heard many horror stories about importing "blindly".
>>
>>14055194
It's just rubber door gasket m8
>>
>>14055433
If ya ain't dutch ya ain't much.
But yeah, 6% is muuuuuuch better than 30%. Actually, 6% is basically what we'd pay here in registration fees. So you'd do well to import one.
>>
>>14055347
Ya really can't help being stranded out in the rain, but you can basically stop the theft thing: install an electric fuel pump so you can make a fuel pump cutoff switch. Install a battery cutoff switch, and if you really want to get crazy, install a SIM card communicating GPS tracker. Steal some juice from the rear tail light line and hide it in the housing or something. That way, even if it gets flat bed stolen, you'll be able to find it.
>>
>>14055440
I wonder if I could hire a local import agency to look through offers for me before going through with it. I'd still save 3-4000 dollaridoos.
>>
>>14055447
Well it sounds like a perfectly fine price I'll be willing to pay. Haha holy shit, I would want he tracker! How much would I have to pay for the service? Tell me more about it actually how to make or buy one(sounds like a fun project)
>>
>>14055457
The tracker itself is on eBay for like $25, but what will cost you is the SIM card. Basically you buy the device and then pop one of those pay-per-minute SIM cards in there. Once that's done, you can text the SIM cards number, and it will text you back the devices (and as such the cars) GPS coordinates, accurate yo within a few meters. You can even set it up for the device to send back audio, since it has a microphone. There's toooons of stuff you can do with it. But yeah, look up "Sim card GOS vehicle tracker". You should find some stuff. I think the youtuber 'big Clive' has a good review.
>>
>>
>>14055436
I know that. So I'm assuming that it gets trimmed to fit and that it also fits well in the Z
>>
>>14055447
I just got a thought that popped into my head. Arduino
You can put on a cellphone/gps shield on it so you can a) track it b) remotely kill the car electronically
>>
>>14057071
It gets trimmed for length, yes, but that's it.

>>14057092
that would definitely work, if you wanted to have that security risk. The only way I'd be okay with that is if there was a physical cutoff switch in the vehicle that could cut the arduino out of the ignition circuit.
>>
>>14055021
Muh dick
>>14057140
You can have both. Or have the micro controller take care of the fuel pump
>>
>>14057237
You want an actual switch for the fuel pump so you can turn it off in cab without a mobile device. At least that's whay I'd want
>>
I'm thinking I should maybe make a mould and cast my own replacement tail light lenses.
>>
Is 400HP to much for a 280z? People have been bumming me out because their saying its stupid and pointless
>>
>>14058544
would be easier to 3d print them.
casting is a pain in the ass unless you're mass producing. at least with metal, idk how much easier it is to cast plastic.

either way 3d printing is a godsend for vintage car guys. all those NLA plastic trim pieces.
>>
>>14058644
It's a lot to expect out of an L28 and it's more than the flimsy, 40-year-old unibody can handle without a substantial amount of bracing.
It'll also wreck the tranny and rear end.
Why do you need 400hp, anyway? Anything above 300 is effectively useless unless you're looking to set a speed record.
>>
>>14058818
In all honesty, it is useless and pointless. I want that much power because I would just like to be decently fast. I want to keep up with some of the cars in my area. Half the time they just shit talk my car so I figured that if I can outrun them I may get some respect.

I want to aim for 400HP with an RB20 and a GT3071R .63A/R. Most likely I'll be running a twin scroll housing and manifold.
>>
>>14058663
hell no, printing won't give you a clear plastic to see through. A silicon mould will give you a very decent casting though, so that's probably what I'd go with. It's about $300 for new lenses, and I'm wanting to see if I could do it for $150 maybe.

>>14058644
forgot to turn your trip off to shit post brah

But really, 400hp is easily attained with an L28ET. Very easy. Add an intercooler, go with a better turbo like the GT3071, clean the head up a bit of porting and some new/straightened valves and new valve springs, and turn that boost up. You'll hit 400 reliable horsepower in no time.
>>
>>14059031
>i aint shitposting nigga
I just wanted opinions on running 400WHP in a 280Z. I want to know if there was anything I should know and if there were any cons to it.
>>
>>14058873
>get some respect.

You're doing cars wrong m8.
You're literally building a car for someone else instead of yourself.

Who fucking cares about other people and their "respect"
>>
>>14059031
if your old taillights are in good condition just hazed up you can get an autobody shop to sand them down and spray clear coat on them, they'll look brand new
>>
>>14059581
This is true. 200hp will make a streetably-fast S30 and technique will do a lot more for you than more power.
Back in college, I had a classmate with a KA-T S14 that decided he could outrun me on Hwy 9. I never once lost sight of him in about ten miles before we parted ways at an intersection.
I was driving a Mazda B2200.
Knowing the limits of your car and the road you're on will do a lot more than raw power.

In short, drive it hard until you max out one of its capabilities, then upgrade whatever fell short. Rinse and repeat.
>>
>>14059587
The problem for me is that mine have big cracks all thtoughoutm. So, new lenses are required basically.

>>14059700

Running? I would try 5000$ and see what the owner says
>>
>>14078420
Depending on condition, anywhere from 500 to 5k. Elaborate.
>>

Only saw it for a second, had a nice patina, I'll be seeing him hopefully next week, and will inquire. Do want.

My god. My fingers were digging into my chair, and I couldn't turn the sound system up loud enough, along with me shouting GET THE FUCK OUTA THE WAY.
I think I found my dream car.
>>
Sounds like a good day!
It also sounds like you might have a bad ground; bad grounds can lead to drains on the battery.

>>14078420
I'd suggest an offer of $1,500, assuming it has some rust and is a bit rusty. We need more specifics, though. >>14078429
That's stupid high for a 510 wagon. They are not as valuable as the coupes or sedans. I see low rust driver wagons selling for $2,500 all day.
>>
>>14078471
The battery is grounded to the trunk, as the battery is in the trunk. Might look into that though
>>
>>14078471
I'll just start off with a mid-level low ball as an inquiry, gotta find out who owns it first and stuff, might be some boomer who 'knows what he's got', doubt it's the D&D guys, I don't think he even has a car.
$3k would be my top end if it were in great condition I think though. Paint and rust shouldn't be an issue, spent most of my teen years scraping the damn stuff off.
>>
>>14078512
Boomers don't give a shit about 510s. The people who sell them for stupid-high prices are mostly hipsters.

Still chasing down a phantom fuel issue on this, up next is the pump. Keeps dying a mile or so into each test drive from fuel starvation
>>
>https://miami.craigslist.org/pbc/cto/5302406629.html
KILL IT WITH FIRE

>>14081215
Gonna go ahead and tell you it aint the fuel pump. What have you tried?
>>
>>14081668

Replacing the fuel pump and inline filter seems to have sorted it out for now, 5mi on the last test drive with no issue. Seems the diaphragm was cracked in the OG pump
>>
>>14081731
Ah, I suppose that would've cause an issue. I was putting money on the filter or on down the line.
>>
>>14081731
Just had this problem with my sisters '84 Honda, except it was four fold: both fuel filters were clogged, the accelerator vacuum diaphragm was snapped, the fuek pump was worn, and the fuel line output line was twisted right next to the fuel tank filler neck.
>>
>>14081779
Is she fine tho?
>>
Yeah the Honda is fixed. Now we just need to get a new online fuel filter for the one we removed by the carb, and get the car smogged. Fun little thing, actually.
>>
>>14082121
Is she hot?

>>14082121
Would you rather fuck your sister it tankgirl?

Neither. One would be incest, and the other would be homosexuality.

On topic, either the Honda or the Z will be getting worked on tomorrow, depending on the weather.

I want to prep a 260z for autocross and road coarse. Besides the handling aspects such as tires, suspension...is there anything I should do to the stock L26 to keep it alive? Higher oil pressure, oil coolers etc?

I have a 3-row champion radiator, new thermostat, water pump, new belts but I do not know much about the motor's ability to with stand track days.
>>
>>14084696
The stock L26 is pretty damn resilient. I'd feel perfectly driving it around and auto cross, assuming the engine is healthy currently.
>>
>>14084696
L engines are pretty unkillable as-is and a 3-row radiator is overkill.
As far as durability mods go, spring for a 280ZX turbo oil pump, electronic ignition (there are several viable options), and a ZX alternator with Dave's adapter plug.

When you do upgrade the suspension, make sure to reinforce the front sway bar mount points.
>>
>>14084768
Any pointers on what to look for as far as electronic ignition upgrades? Specific kits out there or is it a combination of what works?
>>
>>14084796
I have a Unilite but that's probably the second most expensive option there is behind the Kameari distributor.
The easiest way to go is to get a distributor and mounting pedestal out of a '79 280ZX and refurbish it. Everything you need is right there on the dizzy and all that's left is to wire it up.
>>
>>14084858
Sweet, I'll look into that, along with upgrading the alternator, oil pump.

Any issues with oil cooling? What about the cam oil spray bar, get rid of it or anything to enhance lubrication?

>tfw no lip spoiler or wheels for my 350 and 240 is in restoration hell
Feels bad man
>>
>>14084902
I've yet to hear of any shortcomings with the lubrication system at all. The oil pump upgrade isn't even necessary, really, it's just extra assurance. My only advice on that front is to use diesel oil because it has enough zinc to handle a flat-tappet cam whereas modern spark oil zinc levels have been steadily dropping since everything has roller cams these days.

Rotella comes highly recommended.
>>
>>14084902
>>14085047
Also, you can't just "get rid of" the spray bar, you'd have to buy a completely different head.
I believe the N47 was the first head to go with internal cam oiling so realistically, you'd want to look for a P90 or P90a if you're going that route.
But like I said, there's nothing wrong with the external oiling system.
>>
>>14085047
Diesel engine oil has more polymers and detergent additives allowing it to keep more combustion residue in suspension for a longer period before being changed. Seems to me that would create a sludge problem especially if your engine is rebuilt with tighter than stock tolerances. It's been debated many times but in my opinion, I'd stay away for diesel oil in a gasoline engine.
>>
>>14085334
The subaru community is all about rotella, however for a non-turbo'd car like the datsun I'd recommend using a zinc additive instead of rotella.

Gnight gents

I'll leave you guys with a question tonight: there's a '79 B210 (internationally known as the Datsun 310, pic related) for sale for $1,000. It's manual and apparently it runs, drives, and passes emissions. Do you guys think I should somehow try to get it?

If you like it sure I guess. Otherwise you're taking money away from other projects.

Oh damn you make a good point.
Well, off to work on the Z as soon as my stomach settles from eating a fuck ton of sushi and Chinese food. Fucking buffets, man....
>>
>>14089571
>Fucking buffets, man....
You did well to ask for advice before jumping on that 210. Clearly you have no self-control.
>>
>>14089866
I have self control, it's just that I was with a family I was trying to be nice too, and they kept shoving food in my mouth. Plus their father is a classic asian (his words) and he doesn't like it when you refuse food. And at the time, it soinded like a good idea.

So, I sit here by the toilet, shitting and puking my guts out.

To keep it Datsun related, I saw a 280ZX in the parking lot. Black, coupe, hard top. Real clean.
>>
>>14090154
So you're basically having the same experience as my cousin the time we ate at a belt sushi place.
>Eating sushi with cousin and his lady friend of the week
>Cousin excuses himself to the bathroom
>Disappears for nearly an hour
>Reappears and whispers to me "Remind me to tell you what happened in that bathroom"
>Part ways with lady friend, cousin relays his story
>Never eat sushi again
