So I'm looking to get a V8 car to augment my daily driver because they seem to be the cheapest most reliable RWD platform to live with.

I'm torn though between the SN-95 Mustang and LS1 F-body. I'm looking to make this a long term investment.

Any advice on owning either? Common issues? Etc.

I'm normally all for Ferd over a similar GM product. But in this case, you should get pic related.

u want a near 12 second car or a high 14 second car
>>
>>13988794
This basically. The F-body is better in every way.

I like the SN95. I really do, but it can not compete.
>>
>>13988778
In that era, F-Body is where it's at. V6 Camaros were faster than V8 Mustangs. Kek.

The Cobra is nice tho. A buddy had one of those back in the day with a few things done to it. That was a fast car.

Plus dat supercharger... But there are a million things you can do to the LS1 if you have the money. I was driving next to a blown Trans Am WS6 a few months ago. The thing was black and soooo clean. And between the blower whirl and whatever exhaust he had on it, I was having ear orgasms.
>>
>>13988832
The supercharged Cobra's are only 2003-2004 models. otherwise, they were N/A 300 HP DOHC 4V 4.6L V8's. Nothing much to brag about.
>>
>>13988789
OP here. I am partial to T/A's but LS1 powered examples are pricey compared to Camaros.

The thing is, I come from a Ford family and the SN-95 looks easier to work on yourself. I plan on doing all the work with my dad
>>
>>13988859
How big is the difference in price between the V8 Camaro and Trans Am? I just think of the 3 cars, the Trans Am looks the least outdated and will probably hold value the most into the future.
>>
>>13988893
It's kinda big actually. Usually good examples in my area go for over 7-8 thousand. The ones with higher miles start at 5500 and up. The good condition LS1 Camaros tend to be around there.

It also doesn't help that the six speeds tend to be worth more. I ain't dealing with GM's piece of shit automatics
>>
>>13988922
That's rough. Still a lot of car, even for the Trans Am money though. I still love the WS6 T/A so much. Dude I knew when I was younger had a black one and I'll always love that car.

And you're right thinking you need the manual with either of the cars and it's gonna cost more. But worth it, with resale in the future too. So that extra money spent now will come back to you in the end. Which is also part of the reason I don't think spending extra on the Pontiac is a horrible idea.

What about a C5 Corvette?
>>
>>13988942
I really hate to be that guy but I don't like Corvettes.

No back seats for passengers or luggage. The seats are too low and I don't like how they drive. I still think they're cool but I would never own one.

Most C5s in my area are overpriced too.

>>13988957
I understand. I would rather have the T/A over a base C5 as well. Probably a Camaro SS too. For some reason, I like the highest trim of a lower level car better than the lower trim of a higher car. The other cars would be better DD's too, even as useless as the back seats can be. I'm suprised you haven't seen any good deals on C5's tho.

C5z would be a different story tho. Now that is a lot of car for the money, but will probably run twice what the Camaro or Trans Am would.
>>
>>13988968
The problem is that people in my area are buying C5s to rip out their motors to drop into other projects
>>
>>13988984
That's a waste. They should just grab some SBC crate motor instead. Tons of boomers have those just sitting in the garage waiting to go into their "I know what I got!" rust buckets that they swear they will finish one day.
>>
What are the europeanfag equivalent of these 2 cars?
>>
>>13989000
European but offered in the US?

Audi S4 and BMW M3? But they are "Luxury" brands so... Most other cars will be turbo 4cyl hatches and stuff. Yurop has that V8 Vauxhall tho with the LS, right? Did that car have any direct European competitors?
>>
>>13989015
The Monaro VXR/OPC right?

Well it was competing with RS Audis and M BMWs and AMG Mercedes but obviously didn't sell as well.

>>
>>13989270
What issues are you having with it?
>>
Dont buy either. Honestly for the money get a 87 to 93 fox. Take the money you save to upgrade it how you want. Foxs become very nasty cars with very little money.
>>
The F-body is going to be the all around better car to start with. It's also going to be more expensive to start with. Both have massive aftermarkets and after a few thousand dollars worth of modifications to either, the difference is going to become pretty negligible. If you don't intend to do any modifications (and why wouldn't you?) the GM would be a better choice probably.

That said, the Mustang is a million times easier to work on

>looking to get a V8 car

Why
>>
>>13989648
get to 55 faster, or get to 55 sounding better
>>
>>13989042
Yes, the Monaro VXR. Basically the same as that Holden in Australia and the GTO the US got for a couple years.

But what I was saying is that car doesn't really have any direct competition in the European market, right? Any other V8 car with RWD in Europe comes from a German or Italian luxury brand at a much higher price.
>>
>>13990059
Is 55 the fastest you can legally go on any us road?
>>
>>13988778

If you can afford a sn-95 gt. then you can afford a Foxbody.

So you get a foxbody.

no
>>
>>13990095
No. There is an interstate in Texas with an 85mph speed limit. In the midwest and flyover states like Nebraska, the speed limits are 75mph.

Even where I live, in an urban area, I-95 is 65mph and the Turnpike and I-75 are 70mph.

55mph is the speed limit on really busy highways in congested areas and small 2-lane country roads with no shoulders and stuff.
>>
>>13990111
what about montana?
>>
>>13990115
I'm sure Montana is 70mph or 75mph at least. Nebraska has more traffic than Montana and I-80 is 75mph through Nebraska.
>>
>>13990095
No. In my state, highest speed limit is 75.. You get to do an additional 9 without fear of a ticket.
>>
>>13990125
This as well. I know some Yuro countries, you are almost guaranteed a ticket going 5km/h over the limit. On most US highways, they aren't trying to get you for speeding unless you are doing 15mph+ over the limit.

There are exceptions of course like when they set up speed traps just to get a million tickets in an afternoon. But I normally cruise at 70mph-75mph in the 65mph zone and have never gotten a speeding ticket.
>>
>>13989624
Finding an 87 to 93 Fox body in stock condition that's in good shape can cost as much as a newer SN-95 or an F body
>>
>>13990106
There are no stock Fox bodies left at that price. It's like looking for a stock S13 or S14, you're paying for how much of the car you have to fix after someone else's fuckups
>>
>>13988778
I've had both. I had a 2000 Z28 with headers, G5X3 cam, ORY, 125 wet shot, etc. I've also had a 1996 Cobra and a 2001 Stage 3 Roush, also FBO or close to it. The Camaro was stupidly fast, but the fit and finish of the car was terrible. I blew a 4L60E before I had even modded the car, the car leaked, rattled, and had issues with everything. Windows fell down inside the frame, didn't need a key to start, airbag lights constantly giving me crap... but it was fast.

Both Mustangs were great. Had no issues, better fit an finish, but not quite as fast (even the modded Stage 3). If you go for the F body, go for an 01 or 02, if I recall they switched to the LS6 block. I would go for an 03 Cobra. Forged internals, blown, good looking car... weak link is the rods. Earlier 4v SN95's had those shitty hypereuctectic pistons that are weak.

You're going to find anecdotal evidence supporting both sides, but those are my experiences, and mind you this was 10 years ago at least. Let me know if I can help.
>>
>>13990270
>03 cobra weak link is the rods
The 03-04 cobras had manley H beam rods. How is that the weak link?

The 96-98, 99, and 01 cobras have sinter forged rods and hypereuctectic pistons but you can throw a bolt on supercharger on them like a vortech, or procharger for $5k and make 400whp reliably on the stock internals. Thats about all you can do with it though. Some people roll the dice and try for 450whp but you are just waiting for a rod to go through the block at that point.
>>
If you go with an f-body and you are going to beat on it you will want to look into some rear end upgrades, the 10 bolts in them are weak and are known to break with abuse even at stock power levels
>>
I love Ford and all, especially when it comes to the modular v8, but the ls1 is a better powerplant.

If you want torque and raw power for days go with the f body.

If you want horsepower and looks go with the mustang.
>>
>>13990095

70 here in NC

State troopers and county cops are lenient as fuck though. People do 10 over all the time, but once you go above 10 over that's when you start getting looks. I've only been pulled once, and it was for 15 over. I run 10 over regularly past cops and never get any attention
>>
>>13990364

Were the Mk. VIII or Aviator 4-valves built like that?

I'd rather cut corners and not cut corners at the same time.
>>
>>13988778

Only thing I don't like about my SN-95 after 6 months of owning it, are the seats. They just kind of suck. Other than that it's been really easy to work on, even for a novice like me.
>>
>>13988778
In this price range you certainly want the ls1. More modding potential, faster stock and modified, better looking (subjective), and more reliable (assuming you get t56 6 speed tranny)
>>
>>13990469
>horsepower
>raw power
what exactly is the difference?

>>

>>
>>13990077
The Monaro positioned itself in the market as directly competing with the BMW M3s, Audi RS4s, and Merc C/CLK AMGs, and it failed to outsell any of them.

If you want to use specifics in order to argue "direct competition", technically no car has direct competition with anything other than itself.
>>
>>13992201
But what is the pricing like? At the time we had the GTO, I don't think it was even close in price to an M3 or some V8 AMG. That's what I was saying. It's only "competition" in Europe are luxury sports sedans that are probably way more expensive. It is really the only V8 muscle car that isn't a luxury brand in that market.
>>
>>13992079
Deal with it.
>>
>>13988778
Get an Fbody.

Had one since January all I've had to do was routine maintenance. LS1 stock internals respond to bolt ons/nitro very well.

My 99 pontiac trans am

LS1 a4 with a 3.23 torsen lsd. Ttops
>>
>>13993635
also the whole "lol cant turn" thing is total bullshit.

also the interior is not nearly as bad as people say. my car has new carpet and sound-deadening and its nice and quiet. doesn't rattle or squeak excessively. it's actually quite refined

the ride is firm but is comfortable. what you would expect from a sports car. though it's a little rough over bumps, being very stiff and having a solid rear axle. overall it rides and handles amazingly well. this car would absolutely give any weeb mobile a run in the "corners"

also, just cruising around this car is a thousand times better to drive than LITERALLY ANY 4 cylinder car. ever. you don't need to downshift. you don't need to give it any throttle. it has so much torque at any rpm it just gently carries you along.

also, having that much torque, the LS1 fbody is faster at 10-20% throttle than most 4 bangers are at wot.

and i mean modern dohc 4 cylinders

>tfw kids with 4 cyl cars ride in your car and they think you're full throttle when your actually at 15%

then you put it down...

i haven't had a chance to race a mustang yet but I know I'll beat any stock stang that isn't a DOHC 5.0 Coyote or a Termi Cobra
>>
>>13993693
The SN-95 has a fair bit of torque too but you need to rev it out more than the LS1
>>
Are the LT1 F-bodies worth it at all?
>>
F body for sure

02 ws6 trans am is my favorite american car getting one soon just looking for the right one
>>
>>13995474
Hell yeah but as they start to get older finding good condition ones get harder and harder. Not that big of a drop off from a LS1.
>>
Is an SN-95 worth it if you keep finding better condition examples than F-bodies?
>>
>>13995511
>not that big of a drop off from a LS1.

This is not true.

My ex had a '97 T/A M6 back in the day, I couldn't hang with LS1 f-bodies at the time(this was in '00-'02 when these were still new). Also LT1s are a dead heat with a PI 2V and a good driver.

Also OP, my friend has an '03 GT and a '97 Cobra, the GT feels great around town. Plenty of torque on the low end and pulls nicely until 5500rpm. We've raced with him in the Cobra and me in his GT, even until almost 60, then the Cobra just walks.
