It's not the fact that this will definitely cause severe harm to the engine, but logically speaking you're reducing the lifespan of its components if you stay in the upper rpms regularly. Automobile engines are designed to operate at a variety of rpm for a limited amount of time as opposed to something like a generator or lawnmower which has a relatively low rpm range because they're designed to operate at one fairly specific engine speed.

I used to redline my 1.4 Rover through the first three gears pretty much whenever I drove it. It was the only way to inject any sort of urgency whatsoever into the old thing.

Thing is, what little power there was was right at the top end, and the gave the thing stupidly long gearing, presumably to make it more quiet on motorways so they could pretend it was some sort luxury car. This meant that even when you hit the limiter, going from first to second would still drop you right out of the powerband.

I kinda miss it a bit, in a way.
