Koyo is best if you want to go down that road. Gktech fans are decent if you don't want to go through the hassle of setting up twin thermos.

I run standard radiator in my car with twin thermo's from a falcon (strayan POS). Running 21 psi through an rb20 and never had it get over 90 degrees

Because CA18DET's fucking suck. And the car only cost me like 1500 euro. A 200sx with ca18 will cost you like 3.5k for a rusted to fuck one over here. And 180sx are like 6-7k.

I sourced another ka24e locally for 200 euro, and i'm dropping that into the grey 200sx shell. CA18/SR20 will cost you at least like 1200.

When both cars are done, i'm planning to turbo them with t04e ebay turbos, lug type manifold, ca18 injectors with resistor removed and safc-ii's. Goal is 200-230 horsepower, and it'll be fun enough to skid around. Hell, even stock KA24E was fun with a solid clutch and welded diff.

Eh that's not too bad. You'd be paying the same if not more from anyone else. He can get pretty much anything in you need so if you get stuck send him a message.

Also type x tails have different wiring to standards so you can buy adaptors for them which plug and play or fuck about with a soldering iron and wire them up yourself.

Oh cool, a post about these cars.

I'm thinking about getting one of these as a project car. My other car is also a so-called "enthusiast car" (BRZ) but I don't really want to do much to it because the plan is to trade it in for something more practical (an STi). So I'm hoping getting a 240SX would be what I need to cure my thirst for wrenching.

How do you guys find the car to be to work on? I would say I can probably work on cars at an intermediate level, I've never pulled a motor or done a full transmission swap but I've done suspension work and all normal maintenance on my cars before just fine.

I'm thinking of going with a motorless chassis if I get one, because I'd likely want to drop an SR20 or RB20 in straight away. Is this the kind of thing anyone here has done?
>>
>>13975377

Oh, the other car I'd consider if I didn't do a 240 is the first gen Impreza. They're two different cars but does anyone have any experience comparing the two?

the 240sx is basically the BRZ/FRS of the 90s. Cheap, good handling, and an underpowered engine.

and yeah it's a pretty easy car to work on. Fairly large engine bay for a 4banger so there's usually enough room to work with. If you're looking for a project just buy a shell or one that's not running.

>>13975132

That one looks pretty nice, as long as there's not hidden problems with it. Body looks mostly clean which might be worth the extra money. I paid 2100 for mine but it looked like shit (pic related) when I bought it and I had to dump a bunch more money into buying new body pieces for it, and it's a miracle that they're all still the same color.
>>
what would you say is the most similar car to a 240sx?

if you were to trade in your s-chassis for a cheap (>$5k), relatively light weight, agile, handling-oriented RWD 4 seater, but didnt want to pay the 240 drift tax, what would you go for?

ive heard people say foxbody mustangs (but they handle terrible), 944 (kinda fancy), FC rx7 (even though 4 seater tend to be rare)...

are there other comparable cars? Or is the 240 perfect for what it is, and the over pricing is worth it in the end?

Kek. Things to replace on rb20:
>CAS
>afm/maf (go z32 afm and get a retune)
>splitfire coilpacks and a new ignitor because the standard ones crap out after 20 years and splitfires are much cheaper than oem
>do all your hoses/vac lines

240kw out of an unopened 23 year old engine and still have 150 psi across all six, you can't kill them, I've tried.

>swapping an RB20 into an S-chassis
Why do people do this?
>>
>>13983603
Because sr20's are shite and CA's are slow
>>
>>13983613
>sr20s are shite
>swapping in a motor that's heavier and longer with the same displacement
If you're going RB at least get a 25. Kinda pointless imo to get an RB20 when you stil lend up with a 2.0l anyway.
>>
>>13983622
>not realising sr20's are shit
You obviously haven't owned one

>implying 50 kg makes such a big difference that it's noticable

Do you remove your sound deadening to save 15kg? It's like the difference between a full tank of fuel. I've driven both sr and my rb s chassis and my car handles better than those I've driven because of the suspension setup.

Rb25's are nice but they are almost impossible to legally do in straya, plus they take as much abuse as a 20 will. 20's lose compression over time but will still go strong for years, 25's throw big ends and rods. The 25 is a better engine for making power, and if you go a neo 25 you shouldn't have any drama's but when you can buy a good condition rb20 for $500 with a gear box for another $400 you pay more than double that for an rb25 setup. 25 boxes go for $1200 here, and good condition long blocks are about $1500-$2000.
>>
>>13983603
>>13983622
Because RB20s bolt in using the standard mounts and only need minor wiring loom changes.

They sound better and are stronger than SR20 and can make a lot more power because they're much more happy to rev.
>>
>>13983698
>almost impossible to legally do in straya
You must live in a shit state, providing you've done suspension, brakes and some basic bracing it'll pass engineering in NSW without a drama.
>>
>>13983710
Every state has different laws. We have to go through engineering, torsional rigidity tests, cone weaving, 100-0 times with and without weights, full regency inspection and emmsions testing. All up it costs big money to do for even a 20 swap, and 25 swaps aren't as easy to pass as you it'd be in NSW. We don't have mod plates or anything like your setup.
>>
>>13983726
See we don't do any of that shit, a lot more emphasis is placed on the inspector themselves. So essentially as long as you do it properly and it's not floppy, handles and stops as well as it should, then you're all set. Some inspectors can be a bit anal in regards to making sure you use shit like high strength bolts in the right places but that's fair enough.

I just like the RB20 swap because there's no fucking around with the subframe or any of that. Rebuild it, throw it in and have a good sounding engine that will rev to 7500-8000 without trying to eat itself like an SR

Yeaah that's a much better way of doing it but we have shit laws. Anything that looks shiny they defect us for. Once got pulled over by a cop with my mate in his r33 and the cop opens the bonnet and asks "have you got a blow off valve?" Even though there was a massive one sat in the most obvious spot with "BOV" written on it in big bold letters. Most cops here have no clue what they're looking at and just defect for suspicion.

Yeah they're a good little engine, never have any problems with mine and the way they rev is so much fun
>>
>>13983773
How's the turbo going?

Been eyeing them off for a while now and they seem like they might actually be alright
>>
>>13983786
They're pretty decent, heaps of guys here in SA run them without problems, mines running 21 psi through it pretty easy so far. Pulled off the intake last week to check fot shaft play and it was still nice and tight.

didn't read the thread, but the best thing about CA's are that they're very cheap and can take some abuse, but they're notorious for spinning rod bearings and blowing head gaskets
>>
>>13989018
They are also notorious for being owned by shitheads who can't take care of their oil
Notorious for being over rev'd as well. It's a great engine stock, but if you want to get more power out of it well that will take some money...

Friends co-worker has a 300hp CA (probably 300hp at crank) they own a shop. Guy kept changing head gaskets due to overheating. So I asked the friend what the fuck is up with his engine
"It's not really the engine, it's him"
He's got a rb25 now that he's about to drop into the car, but let's see how long that one lasts.

RB20's ARE NOT BETTER THAN SR20'S

RB20
>Shit aftermarket support
>hard to get parts for

>heavier than sr

>b-b-but its out of a skyline
you have a shit engine that makes shit power, the only reason to get it is cause of "its a skyline motor"

the only reason I would get an RB20 is because

After prowlin the WWW i found some people saying its too hard to find parts for the rb20 now and id be better off with the rb25

Is that true and would the rb25 drop into a 240 like the rb20 does
>>
>>13988916
People don't build them & add too much boost, or run to light an oil, go hard, then spun bearings happen.
They're all really avoidable common problems, but most people with SR's just abuse them & redline the shit of them without proper maintenance because it's in they're half assed drift car.
>>
>>13995484
You are retarded.

Plenty of guys here run standard 20's with a big td06 on e85 and make 300kw without any dramas. You run that through a standard sr and let me know how you go in 3 months time. Everyone scraps sr's here after they blowvup their 3rd one because they are shit unless you soend big money on them.

>hurrr shit after market

You know that most of the shit you bolt onto to a 25 bolts straight on to a 20 you retard. A series 1 rb25 is practically a rb20 with .5 more litres and side feed injectors. Hot side is identical.

>revs slower than an sr

It also revs higher and doesn't destroy it's rockers.

>heavier

Yes

>makes shit power

An identical setup rb20 vs sr20 the rb20 will be making it's peak power higher than an sr20 and it would be a 3-4kw difference at most.

Nobody engine swaps rb's because they're out of a skyline, they engine swap them because they're tired of their shitty sr20's blowing up.
>>
>>13996379
Getting a 25 into an s13 is a bit of a pain in the ass for bonnet clearance. Gotta look up how people have mounted them to make them sit lower, or maybe better off running an aftermarket plenum as that's generally the highest point on rb's.

You can spin an RB20 to 8000 with the hydro lifters while still being safe. Some aussie with a td06 and 380 something HP was spinning to 9000 or more in first in second gear to keep the boost up. Engine eventually died because it overheated, no thrown rods or valves hitting pistons or anything

RB25's don't like to rev as much, and aren't as tough as 20's, and seem to blow more than 20's. 20's seem to never die, they just lose compression over the years. 25's make power easier and obviously have a better powerband for a street car

easy parts availability for both in the US as well

RX7 rotary maintenance wasn't something I wanted to deal with & A80 Supra is more of a heavy grand tourer, not what I wanted.
Plus before I found my car I was looking at Corvettes, Foxbodies, 4th gen fbodies, and even tried getting a Skyline in the US (before R32's were legal & almost got a 4 door 25GT R34 crushed)
also back then /o/ overhyped Miata's like /k/ used to with Mosin Nagants, but wasn't something I wanted to own.
All I wanted was a reliable & fun car that I could do what I wanted with, without worrying too much about; and in the end it turned out to be a better vehicle then my Sierra or Monte Carlo, so it became my daily driver.
>>
>>14005295
I'm taking the bait

>MK4

Why would an S owner want to have a pigfat heavy as fuck car? Looke the Mk4 supra is fucking great, but I doubt people that want a S chassis are the type of people to drive a Supra.

>FD

Yeah okay, now we're talking. A straight up better car. Better chassis, handling, power... but you seem to forget how much a decent FD costs and then we get to the same old washed out talk: the money you spend on a decent FD and maintaining one can be used to make an S13/14 perform as good as the FD. The FD will probably have a slight edge over them cause of some things in certain situations, but hey.

Have fun with your LS Miata, if the chassis survives the first hard pull that is. Also have fun doing any higher speeds with that light, short wheelbase and soon to be noseheavy car.

Ha, well the majority of KA engines ended up neglected and abused because fuck the KA just swap in a SR in brah.

When I first got mine it had a junkyard pulled KA with no real history and was in a non running state. Got it running and eventually I overheated that motor too many times due to a cracked radiator and it warped the head allowing oil to mix into the coolant. It never had proper oil pressure after that and trashed the internals. I ran it 15,000 miles like that before pulling it out to swap in a fresh KA. I do wonder how long it could of gone for before it spun a bearing.

1989 S13. My friend has been building this car for 6 years. He got it as a shell when he was younger.

Car chassis is a total slut. and has had many diffrent engines in it. Multiple KA's and SR's. and even a few VQ's and LS's until it came into his hands.

At the moment its an redtop SR20 with stage 1 tomei cams running 12psi of boost.

when it comes to suspension, i have no idea. all i know is that its a lot of stuff.

When it comes to cosmetics, also a ton. I'll post a few more pictures of his.

Thanks for the comment, the plan with a 240 is to swap in an RB motor anyhow, so I was going to be primarily looking for shells like you say.

I have decided now that I'm going to start saving and try to make a 240 happen. I'd really hope that next year I can pick up the car and a motor and hopefully have it in by the end of the year. This is going to relieve me of trying to modify my BRZ and finally give me the project I've always wanted.

What's everyone's thoughts on S13 vs S14, and RB20 vs RB25? Should I shoot for rebuilding the motor before I put it in the car? These are some of the early things I want to start thinking about in this concept phase.

Take it from me the vert is a can of worms that you dont really want to get into.

Essentially, both quater windows will break if theyre not broken already (which they are since they're both rolled up in that pic with the door windows down), ASC added a lot of metal to the car and DIDNT paint over any of it so you literally cant buy a rust free vert. You can fix most of it but they added some metal to the rockers, and in between the outside unibody and the inner bracing that is impossible to get to without cutting out welds and re welding in entire panels. Also the trunk struts will be bad, and the rear window will need to be replaced if it hasnt been already.

That said I still love crusing around with the top down, especially in the snow so I can look like a huge faggot
>>
>>14014255
But it is rust free
I don't live in the salt belt
And I've never seen a vert with quarter windows down , I thought that was how it's supposed to be
I don't really care if they don't go down anyway

When my other options are literally discarded drift missile and overpriced shit, I'll take whatever S13 I can get and improve it myself
I'll improve the car like I improve myself
Because this will be my car and I am going to work hard no matter what
>>
>>14014255
I should also point out about vert rust: See that gnarly rust hole in my rocker? Thats rusted the outside in, basically, my driver side rocker is gone. There is an even bigger hole in the rocker in the wheel well and you can see into it and see that the whole thing is just gone. There supposed to be a bunch of bracing and stuff in there and its all gone and rotted out. And there is literally no other rust on this car, its perfect everywhere except where ASC added metal and even with that in mind the my chassis probably only has another two years or so before the rust spreads too far.

But thats okay because shells are cheap
>>
Water rusts steel too, not just salt. I'm not joking when I say there is a load of exposed metal on that car. And no matter what you think exposed steel that has been around for 20 years is going to be rusty, probably not as bad a salt belt car but a vert is 100% guaranteed to have a shorter lifespan than a normal s13.

I'm not saying that you shouldnt buy it, but I would only do it if you can get it for less than 2k, because the car literally can never be as good as a normal schassis or a miata.
If you just really want a schassis, you should wait till you get a car you really want, instead of jumping on the first decent s13 that pops up in your area.
>>
>>14014319
is a reply to
>>14014282
>>
>>14014319
Why can it never be as good
>>
>>14014328
Well, mostly because of all of the extra metal ASC put on the car, a vert is a good 400lbs heavier than a coupe. And sure you can pull 200lbs of shit off if you go hard core, but even then theres still another 200lbs of bracing you'd have to cut off of the unibody. And if you did that the car would be even more flexible and less rigid than it was before. And it already is the floppyest schassis you can get.

Also if you ever roll the car you will die, and if you put a roll bar in then you lose the rear seats and should have bought a miata in the first place.

Can a vert be a good schassis? Yeah no doubt, I love mine despite its flaws, I bought it knowing what I was getting into. Could it be as good as a coupe or a hatch? Maybe if I went complete race car with it, gutted out all the extra metal and did a full cage then yeah. But at that point it's not really a vert anymore.
>>

You could still fit a couple people back there, but if you were to crash they would probably die colliding with the bars. I take that risk more often than I like in my friends coupe, but its something to think about.

hey dude dont be like that, the vert isn't a bad car, its just objectively inferior to a coupe or hatch. if you like the car you should at least try to low ball the guy for it. And fixing all of the gay vert problems will put some hair on your chest.

And I mean shit, don't let someones own personal experince outweigh yours, theres nothing stopping you from looking at the car and asking the guy to let you drive it. You don't have to do what people on the internet tell you to do.

I've been doing what the Internet has told me to do since I was 13
I'm not a person

What ill also say is this, I bought my vert knowing full well that its wasnt going to last forever, and that ifI flipped it that it would kill me and anyone inside it. And in two or so years when the rust consumes the unibody I will be sad, but it will be okay because Ill never forget it and every single part on that car can also go onto any other s13. I have many regrets in life but I had to do it again I'd probably still get the vert because of how much fun it is driving it around.

The vert is special, very few were made, and they look sweet with all of the windows rolled down. Its a great cruiser, dont knock it till you try it

Fuck is a rocker
>>
>>14015406
Are you asking what a rocker is? If so, a rocker is a part of the engine where the lifter pushes a pushrod into an indent in the rocker which in turn is pressed upwards (like a teeter totter) and the other side presses down on the valve spring. Alternatively a rocker can refer to the rocker panel which is the underside of the car underneath the door, facing the ground and curving back upwards to where the body meets the door sill.
