Had an interesting conversation with my father recently.

My father says that he thinks the Chevrolet Cobalt brought back the spirit of the original Chevy Nova, and should've been called the Nova.

I would normally argue against this, but this is a man who can tell which Nova is which model year and trim level by the bumper and grille. His first car was a '74 Nova SS 350, and throughout the late 60's and early 70's, his older brother used to drive him around in a 63, a 64, and a 66 Nova. This is a man who knows his Nova's. I just don't see it.

These are the only facts I've seen that they have in common:
>Both were considered compact cars
>Both had high performance SS variants
>The Cobalt SS Supercharged is about as fast as a '69 Nova SS 396, and faster than the 350 equipped cars
>both were basically unloved shitboxes of their times

Beyond that, I just don't see it. What does /o/ think?
>>
Cobalt a shit

Source: I own one
>>
>>13963796
I've always seen the cobalt as chevy's response to the dodge Neon and Subaru Wrx. Not a competitive response but still.
>>
>>13963808
It's literally a revitalization of the Cavalier.

So were the Nova's
>>
I could see where he was coming from if the cobalt was rwd

I saw it as more of a hotted up cavalier. He's right about nearly everything though.

Welp, I've owned 2 Novas, DD'd one for 10 years, can identify every year 62 through 74, and the Cobalt is a POS, FWD is never redeemable.

Best Chevy nova built coming through!!!
>>
>>13963816
Yeah. It's a small economy car. Just like the dodge neon and subaru impreza.
>>
I can see it

>>13963838
Id rather have one of those tbqh

its cooler
>>
>>13963816
>Cavalier
Which came from the nova
>>
>>13963827
wahhhh look at me I can't look at things objectively.

I can see where your father is coming from. I think the main problem with it is that the huge variety of cars available today, cars will never be singularly as prevalent as they were back then.

The other problem with anyones opinion on this board is that 95% of the people here weren't alive when novas were new. They can't see how prevalent they were as utter shitboxes. Nowadays they are a sought after american muscle car icon.

back then grandma drove one to the grocery store. They were just a car.

I think your father probably has a better grasp on the similarities than a lot of people here.

that said, still a FWD shitbox, but that's where the market is.
>>
>>13963840
>It's a small economy car
So was the Nova when it started. A lot of people forget that. If Chevrolet had kept building the Nova like Honda did the Civic, the Cobalt is probably what the Nova would've become.
>>
>>13963796
Nova, shitty nova, shitty cavalier, cobalt.
Same line, should have stuck with one name.
>>
>>13963850
Nova:
Model years:
1962–1979
1985–1988

Cavalier:
Model years:
1982–2005

The Cavalier directly replaced the Nova.
>>
I think it would have been cool if they put the Code 130R into production as the Nova. Too bad they put the turbo four into the Camaro
>>
>>13963934
Now THAT I could see.
>>
I think the big 3 have figured out that they catch flak for re-using names of classics on anything that's not a sports car or muscle car.

It's not entirely fair, of course. Many of those fondly-remembered names were just ordinary cars in their day, so re-introducing them as such makes enough sense. But, an ordinary DD-level car doesn't live up to the (exaggerated) memory that people tend to associate with those classic models.

tl;dr your dad's not wrong but I see why Chebby didn't do it.
>>
>>13963942
Will this ever see the light of day?
>>
>>13963996
I kinda saw it from the beginning, but I wasn't entirely sure.

I still don't understand the moparfags hissy fits over the new Dodge Dart. the original Dart was a Nova competitor so it was a shitbox too.
>>
>>13964008
The Code 130R was thought up as a competitor to the Toyobaru triplets. It was reportedly green lit for production using the Alpha platform, but no one's heard anything since then.
>>
>>13963861
Same with the Dart, everyone remembers the Hemi Dart, but they made less than 50 of those and like 12 million with the slant six.

so were Novas prone to shut themselves off an kill its occupants aswell?
>>
>>13964020
>Alpha platform
Is there anything this glorious bastard can't do?
>>
>>13964008
Probably not. It could eat into the sales of the Camaro.

It would have been nice to have a $22k 2.5l 200hp Nova, $26k 275hp 2.0 Turbo Nova, $30k V6 Camaro, and then the $38k Camaro SS. But why spend a bunch of money for a new chassis when the Camaro hits almost all of those markets at once for less?
>>
>>13964045
Not everyone wants a Camaro doe. Some people still see it as your go to vehicle for your average cousin-fucker and not a robot in disguise.
>>
SS Turbo is on my wish list, one of the only cars Chevy got everything right

Chevy usually gets everything right the last year they make the car. Every time.

Also at OP. Nice pic at GLD. It's where I popped my drag strip cherry

If the Impala is FWD then so can the Nova.
If the Impala of now is supposed to be a "Spirit" of past impalas. Then the Cobalt does just fine as the successor to the Nova.
In regards to size comparisons.

I still think they should drop the names of cars with radically different platforms.
A 1969 Impala has nothing but name and emblems in relation to a 2016.
>>
>>13963796
I never understood that. The Nova straight up looks like a muscle car.

Nope. It's all about styling changes.
THIS is what 90% of Nova's looked like. Stop trying to look at the car through rose-tinted glasses.

I bought a 2005 base cobalt for my first car. I got fucked with constant maintenance, failed inspections, and poverty.

Wait
You know your dad?
Then why did you turn out gay?
We're to raised by your mom?
>>
>>13966677
>stereotypes
I was raised by both my parents, and I had a fairly normal suburban childhood. My mother died when I was 18, and my sister when I was 20.
and despite him being very stoic, I had a good relationship with my father. In fact, he's the one who encouraged my love of cars. I remember helping him with oil changes and brake lines (pic related), going to classic car shows (mostly air cooled VW shows) as a child, and going to Monster Jam events when they were nearby. I also occasionally went to the drag strip because my Aunt, until the late 90's, raced a 10 second 84 Camaro (originally a V6 car. She swapped in a 350 that had been bored and stroked to a 427, and a built automatic. Because the cylinder walls were so thin, it wasn't uncommon for her to blow motors left and right. But she refused to believe us when we said she needed to switch to a big block at that displacement for reliability.)

Being gay doesn't mean I had some sort of tragic upbringing. Just a point of fact, I also have 2 older brothers.

shit nigger i didn't know you were a faggot
what does you dad think about it
does he approve of you potentially sucking tyrone's cock?

Doesn't affect him so he doesn't care.

>Dad.... I'm gay
>>Ok. What's for dinner?
>Did you hear what I just said?
>>Yea but you didn't say anything that affected me. Now what's for dinner?
>>
>>13965645
I dunno. It's both of ours. We put equal parts money and time into it. We went to the track together, we both made passes, and we take it to car shows together. Sometimes I drive, sometimes he drives.
