Driving down the road and my entire back window came out flew up and shattered into a billion pieces on the road...

what's the worst broken part or breakdown you have experienced while driving?

I had an rx7 with a bad sunroof motor. So I rigged it to just unbolt by hand. Forgot to put the bolts back on

That was shitty. Luckily I had a spare at home.
>>
>>13916814
At least you had the spare haha
I didn't even notice a pressure change I just caught it in the rearview as it popped out didn't even really make a sound luckily all the cars were pretty far behind me I just kept going was nothing I could do at that point. Felt like a dumbass driving home with no glass back there

>driving down interstate in my old truck

>carburetor

>blows the rusty old exhaust system off at the bends after the exhaust manifolds
>drive home with the exhaust dragging on the ground and my earmuffs on because it's loud as fuck
I used this as an excuse to put some better flowing exhaust manifolds I had laying around on, and welded up a new, quieter, dual exhaust system.

I also had a backfire happen on my old KZ900 that was so bad it blew the carbs off.

Ford axod transmission pueked its fluid all over in the mountains an hour from home when I tried taking my first long distance trip to snowboard when i was 17. It was also how I learned to change a transmission, and that one needed a new shift actuator thing. Ford sucks. Just helped a random local fix his ranger cause it had mixed up plug wires after po fucked it up.

I gave them shit for it the day I went to pick the car up. I had explicitly requested they put a new belt in since the car was just over 120k miles on the odometer, and when they said they didn't I tried to get them to put a new one in before driving it off and forking over even more in labor to get the whole thing done again.

The only reason that didn't happen is the mechanic was really bro with my Dad and my Dad played it off like he knew anything about cars saying it wasn't needed.

The week prior to dealing with that asshole, I had taken it into another shop that scheduled my car in but they sat on it for over a week prioritizing their family's shit because small town and so it never was looked at.

I tried to get the shop that did the water pump to pony up some money for the bill but they weren't going to budge short of being dragged to court over it and I didn't have that kind of time or resources to wring them in small claims for $300. They'll never see any business from me again, I can guarantee that much.

>luckily it's the gardening section at 10pm so there are no cars there and I can essentially coast and turn Us until the brakes do enough.

If I didn't love the car so much I would have scrapped it there but I got it fixed. I gave up on it when it did the same thing with another brake pad as I was backing out of my driveway. Mechanics could never find anything that was wrong either.

I got hit in the chest by a piece of tire that flew off of or got kicked up by a truck while riding my motorcycle, it broke a rib and left a giant crescent shaped bruise across me. Plot twist: the truck was in the opposing lanes, on the other side of a jersey barrier, in the middle of the night when there were no other vehicles around. I just happened to cross paths with this truck at the wrong moment. Double twist: I didn't crash the bike, just pulled over, called 911, then my insurance company to have them tow it to my house.

One time I put new rotors on my car cause they were warped and forgot to properly torque the caliper stay bolts. Upper one fell out and startef clicking on the way home from a fishing tournament. When i pulled over to see what was wrong it locked up at abour 30. Luckily I had a close enough wrench to switch top and bottom and make it home but fuck I felt like an idiot. Proper torque for those is hard as you can with big ass breaker bar now.

Turns out all the engine mounts broke or rotted away.
The bump shifted the engine which pulled the axle spline apart.
Then while revving it the whole fucking engine jumped, warped the hood and all that noise was from the fan destroying itself and the radiator/shroud.

New axle (i ground that fucker smooth), new engine mounts, new radiator, fan and shroud, plus some belts and hoses.

Wasn't actually too expensive to fix. The hood got fixed with some vice grips and a rubber mallet.

I figure (with the help of qtddtot) it's the ignition could getting wet that causes it to sputter and backfire so I got some motomaster spray stuff to protect them (6 dollars) to help diagnose if it's really the issue of not.

Still debating if I should just put a glass pack on myself with no real welding skills or decent tools or just bite the bullet and pay like 100-200 dollars at the shop. I have two DDs anyways. #shitboxlife

That was fun explaining to the insurance company.
Turns out, the drive shaft was a 2 piece shaft and at the connecting point, it shit itself and caused the car to basically pole-vault.
Luckily, and miraculously my car didn't destroy itself. I took it to a shop and they got a new junk yard drive shaft and had to reset the position of the rear end but I drove the car for a few years after that. The transmission went out so I sold it.

>clutch master cylinder going out. Leaking dot 3 everywhere
>order new one at NAPA from across the country.

>wrong master cylinder in the right box
Drive to school buttmad about fuckup (only one NAPA had in the country)
>Start to drive home after school
>press clutch.
>pedal falls to floor limply
>force car into 2nd and run stopsign to get into a church parking lot.
>no fluid in reservoir. Filled to max before leaving to school...
>fill to top, and bleed line.
>order new one from O'Reilly.

This time I got the right one. NAPA keeps giving me the wrong shit. Fist time I got a ball joint and the box contained a Tercel CV boot..

.....

Your timing belt broke and it was only three hundred dollars to do the repair?
>>

>on holiday with friends
>driving on highway
>casually check rear view mirror
>we are smoking like a fucking chimney
>some old dude pulls up next to me and waves but I already know
>get scared as fuck, pull over at next gas station which was luckily only a few hundred meters away

Turns out the oil cap flew off for some fucking reason, spilling all the oil basically everywhere. It had a horrible smell but once we filled it up we could continue as if nothing happened. Was pretty scary though, i thought for a moment that the car might catch fire or something. It was my father's 12 year old Opel btw, when i told him the story he just said that "oh yeah that happened to me once as well". Apparently it's a design flaw which just occasionally happens with the oil cap.

I paid $350 for water pump and timing belt in my '93 Ranger. Including the cost of the parts.
>>
>>13926044
Yeah but he said the timing belt broke. I was under the impression that the repairs for that were considerably more expensive.
>>
>>13926049
if its a non-interference motor, nothing internally gets damaged in the break. You buy a new belt, line it all back up, and you are done.
>>
>>13926049
This depends on the engine. Some engines will allow contact between the pistons and the open valves when the belt brakes and the crankshaft continues to spin before the vehicle is stopped. Others are non-interference and have enough space between the two that this will not happen. Usually higher compression engines will have interference.

>temperature at max
>reach friends house steam flooding everywhere
>turn off car without letting it turbo spin down

Latter took off entire system found every join was welded except one tacked it up re-connected filled up coolant just thankful nothing got damaged. 2 years later someone torched my car Pic related motor i question

>I bump into him, at like 5km/h
>his towing hook absolutely destroys my front end
>leaking water all over the road, car doesn't drive anymore
>the other driver is some slav immigrant, looks desperate and can barely understand the language
he paid for getting my car towed, I still had to spend a lot to get it fixed

>goes to 7 PSI of boost

>Welp guess that's just that vacuum leak

the coupler hooking up the intercooler to the turbo was the woosh sound. No big deal though

>On road trip 150 miles from home

Drive home on the highway with no brakes just engine braking the whole way.Turns out one of the rear drum brake cylinders burst.
>>
>>13926063
>>13926077
I genuinely did not know that. Thanks for the info.

Are you retarded or something?
>>
>>13929405
>Are you retarded
He drove home with failed brakes instead of getting a tow, you don't really need to ask that question.
We know the answer.
>>
>get on highway with friend following
>gun it
>eeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

>slow down and drive like a grandpa in the right lane to get home

>check with mechanic
>remove accessory belt
>no more sound
>look at fan cluth
>the bearing is literally spitting metal chunks out of the housing
>replace fanclutch and fan at the same time since its old/cracked
>back to being able to hoon at WOT
>>
>>13921066
That's extremely common on EK hatches.
>>
>>13920003
I had it towed.
>>
>>13916911
thats a VW turbo for ya
>>
>>13921016
i thought that was happening to my explorer so i slammed on the e-brake pedal to find out that it didnt work either. luckily my brakes didnt give out, turns out the ABS was actually kicking in due to a bad sensor which made it feel like the brakes gave out for a second.
scared the shit out of me since a semi was hauling ass through an intersection that i was supposed to stop at
>>
>>13929426
I had to bleed someone's brakes because they let the reservoir get empty and kept driving for a whole day with no brakes. I hate driving in city traffic because there's people like this out there that could rear end you

Mfw I look under and the rear master cylinder burst open and I lost all my brake fluid (truck has two but all connected)

I got three for you.

>Trying to turn onto busy street.
>Give gas, start rolling forward
>hear sound similar to twisting a soda can
>car rolls backward into car behind me.
>other driver really chill, he watched the whole thing and knew what happened.
>look under car, driverside CVT shaft is missing. (found in the middle of the road)
>passenger side shaft is hanging loosely.
>off to the shop she goes

And another...
>driving to friends place after work
>cruising along
>steam rolls up from under the hood and the engine stall
>Open hood to find radiator header tank is split, spraying hot coolant all over the engine compartment
The radiator was in such bad shape that the fins could be poked out with your finger. My mechanic at the time said if the top hadn't blown, the bottom would have.

And a more recent one.
2005 Pontiac Sunfire

My car was in the shop for a month.

I should have scrapped it and got something different. Ah well, not much I can do about that now.
