Has car design stalled?

The Edwardian era saw a move away from designs modeled on horse carriages. The 1930s saw big leaps in aerodynamic unibody designs. Cars in the 50s and 60s had fins and chrome while those in the late 70s and early 80s featured angular, wedge-shaped designs with pop-up headlights. Then the "jellybean" Taurus came in 1986 and all modern cars have copied this look ever since.

... and then what? It's been 30 years since the launch of the Taurus. Why has car design remained mostly unchanged since then?

But actual jelly bean Taurii (96-99) were a sales disaster.

Blame safety standards and regulations.

All the cars that you would reference as being increasingly progressive in design up til the 80's had virtually no safety or impact standards to limit their design.

thats not a jellybean taurus

speaking of the ford tempo's...
does anybody know of a tranny that can fit the motor?
my brother dropped one on me with a rebuilt barely broken in engine but the tranny is fucked and its on its second one and they come out to 750 a pop used + labor at his mechanics

now i plan to do the work myself and shit but is there a transmission thats compatible?

dont know shit on tempos

or division

Actually if you're looking for the modern cars that have carried on their traits in the most modern cars since, you're looking for the E65 Seven Series.
>>
What is there to change?

Also, you're wrong, designs have become more aerodynamic since the 1980s and the materials have also changed, making cars lighter, faster and also stronger.

Tranny is absolute garbage in Tempo.
Ford designers should have been executed.
My granny had one that wouldn't shift from 2nd - 3rd half the time. Dealer kept saying they couldn't reproduce the problem. Refused to fix it.

Ford cars are absolute shit, and that division is the absolute worst auto manufacturer on the globe. Their trucks are okay, but Ford Motors are fucking crooks that make shit tier cars and rip off old ladies.
>>
Car design has stalled because of the EPA's fleet fuel economy standards. Cars gravitate towards the most aerodynamic design because more aerodynamic = better fuel economy. So you end up with every car having the same basic shape.

Nigga plz...
Do you ride a bike or something?

My fat whore ex had the Mercury Sable, last I heard it was left on the side if the road dead in Florida.
They are total shitboxes, fwd, and get about a dosen miles a gallon.
The fucking worst.

Also hers was always leaking and overheating, and throwing belts like a special olympian.

> The Taurus was released to showrooms on September 24 of that year, and sales began a week later on October 1.[14] The Taurus was released almost a week later than the Sable, as Ford designers consulted a $500 Sherman Oaks, California astrologer to figure out the best solstice date to release the car.[15]

That car's expression, though...

It looks like an English aristocrat having to chastise the butler for helping himself to some of the family wine.

To a certain degree it's what you are used t seeing. I'm a gearhead from birth, but I have trouble differentiating cars before the mid 50's or so.

Besides that, what you are looking at as far as modern car styling is concerned is the direct result of fuel economy standards in the US and to a lesser degree, safety and crash standards.

The US has had the largest car market in the world for a long time. In order to sell cars here, you have to meet our emissions and safety standards as well as fuel efficiency standards. If you don't meet the MPG standards, you get bitch slapped with a massive tax, making your product thousands more expensive.

The best and easiest way to meet tightening MPG standards was to improve aerodynamics as well as make engines more efficient.

The Taurus was just the first mass produced car to reach this kind of design in a shape that was appealing enough to most buyers. The smooth shape and rounded lines were inevitable, if Ford hadn't done it someone else would have very shortly after.

Aero wins, it has simply been a race to the most efficient design.

I have a 2000 Sable, and it is an excellent car. Rides smooth as silk, dead dependable, 25-30mpg average, comfy... Most of the time it depends more on how well the car was taken care of than what type of car it is. When you by a $500-$1000 car, you are going to have a fuck ton of problems no matter what.
