Funny you mention that, the truck was actually Zie-barted when new, looks to be pretty sturdy stuff even 20 years after the initial application. I've just been spraying fluid film on top of that. The Fluid Film isn't as sturdy but it creeps really well as it is oil based. So it will saturate and creep into any areas that do have surface corrosion. Costs about $45 for a gallon if you want to thin it and spray it through a sprayer, this year I decided to just buy a six pack of the aerosol cans and a little wand that allows to spray inside of the frame. Messy smelly work but oh-so worth it.

Don't EVER go to Quebec during the winter (or.. ever, really).

They use sand mixed with salt, and I guess they use French sand because it's full of terrible things like stones and small rocks.

Not only do you get some nice paint chips and window cracks, but the salt immediately gets into said paint chips and rusts on contact.

Pic related: any surface which can be hit by wheel-debris, will be hit by rocks and salt.
>>
I can't believe that salting the road is even legal.

How is causing such widespread damage to property even allowed?

Defuck is proper equipment on ice? Studded tires ruin roads for the most part so are banned in many places. Winter tires help a lot, and are mandatory in some areas, but they don't make you stop on black ice.

I'm doubting that you've actually driven in such conditions.

Pretty much every state where it doesn't snow on there is a shithole full of retarded rednecks or a flyover state
>>
>>13903268
Canada, your northern better (more than) half.

Ontario doesn't allow studded tires. To be honest I don't know why... Can't see how they would actually harm asphalt, but it's the law currently.

Studs make less traction in the dry, though. More expensive and loud as well. And ice is still ice, aka not as good as bare (or wet) asphalt regardless of what you have on your tires. Therefor salt > no salt from a safety standpoint.

We get more snow and ice than you do, and it shows. Went to NY for a visit during a "snowstorm" a few years ago. You autists just shoved the snow onto parked cars using garbage trucks, literally. Busses had chains on their tires even though there was zero ice. They were shovelling sidewalks with floor squeedgies. Shit was funny.

I realize there are states with harsher winters than NY, but on average, we know what we're doing and we salt our roads. Smarter people than us have had these discussions, and even with the environment becoming literally salted, this is the safest way.

In almost every situation there's not enough salt to actually melt the ice, and what melt you do have dilutes and runs off once it does melt.

They even wait until halfway through the summer. Then, being on government money, they take 4x as long to do anything as they should, and end up having to use special blends of shitty asphalt/concrete because it's getting cold again.

alright now youve pissed me off.

Salt lowers the freezing point of water, which is the same as the unfreezing point of water
if its -5 c you have ice
but if you have salty water with a freezing point of -10c it will stay water at that temp, if that water happens to be ice, then it will become water.
if you put salt on ice the ice melts a little on contact (this is why ice is slippery, its always covered with a fine layer of water)
that water becomes salty, and then the salt in the water interacts with the ice, and lowers the freezing point of the ice.
then, because the freezing point of that ice is lower than the temp, it melts, becoming more salty water
this continues till the salty water is diluted enough that its freezing point is the same as the surrounding temp

also, have you ever pored salt on your icy fornt walk, and heard it crackle, then looked back later to see the holes where the salt crystals bored through the ice?

I guess it's on a municipal basis so YMMV, but I've only ever seen sand being used on dirt roads in Ontario.

I got a used car from a Quebec owner. He used it as a commuter to Ottawa for work, but from somewhere in Gatineau. Front bumper is nearly unpainted from all the sandblasting.
