for the same displacement and stroke doubling the amount of cylinders can give 15% more power for the same rpm and piston speed

and on lesser note 8 cylinders is the minimum amount to have overlapping power strokes

6 cylinder is better for exhaust scavenging important for turbo

4 cylinder only gets its power high up due to crank geometry and 4th order balance issues

I know that an I-6 is the smallest engine that has perfect 1st and 2nd order balance, which is why they're known for "smoothness" and are popular in industrial applications.

V-12s are just two I-6s attached at the crank, so they are also perfectly balanced, and can be placed at any angle. It seems like the next logical step would be a W-18 built like 3 I-6s.
