Hey /o/. I have a 1987 300zx turbo and it doesn't run. I want to pull the engine and fix it up, but I'm inexperienced and lacking in knowledge. Is it worth it? Any suggestions, tips, alternatives?
I'd prefer not to swap the engine.

so you want to pull an engine without any prior experience and I'm guessing the tools to make it possible
best place to start is to pick up a Haynes manual and start reading everything you can to educate yourself before you start evaluating if pulling the engine is worth it

I have a garage full of (poorly organized) tools, a hoist, a stand, and a dad who pulled an engine one time 40 years ago. I have a Haynes manual and I've started following the steps to pull the engine, but it's definitely slow going. I keep getting hung up on little things and it just astonishes me that people can accomplish something like this in a matter of hours.

I would fix it. Even if the block is completely toast save the turbo stuff and get a VG33E from a junkyard from a pathfinder. Keep the cams too, unless you want it to have a lot of torque. Should be pretty quick, or you could sell it. An 87 model turbo is the most desirable due to the LSD and it still has the T3 unlike the 88 models. You could probably sell it for 4k on the high end, but I would keep it. If your end goal is to sell it I probably wouldn't even bother fixing it, that aren't worth much. If you want to keep it and modify it, you can have a pretty fast car.

Swap a $500 5.3L into it
easy 400 horsepower for little money.

Ls1, all you need is about a grand ,a couple of friends and a six pack or two.

This is the only correct answer.

It's not that hard, but those cars can be basket cases.
