People actually pay money for snake gas?
>>

Nitrogen in a DD is the snake oil equivalent for cars. Does absolutely nothing.

They do

I don't have nitrogen in my tires and get a tire pressure light every cold morning in my car. My mom had nitrogen put in her 5th gen and never gets a tire pressure warning light cause her tire pressure never waivers that much.

How about this? Overfill your tires with air, calculating the correct volume based on pressure and density, so that when all of the oxygen molecules have "left" you are left with pure nitrogen in your tires.

nah i have it and it still goes up and down with the temps enough that it triggers the sensors. most tire shops that use it now will give you free nitrogen as long as you bought the tires from them and most dealers also give it free when you buy vehicles from them

personally i don't think it makes any difference but i still use it simply because i have my own nitrogen but if i had to run off to the dealer or wherever all the time i'd be changing to air

The Costco where I had them installed literally would give you nitrogen for free, they didn't even care if you didn't purchase tires from them. I didn't, however, because lolgm coatings on the lips of the rims is starting to oxidize because previous owner was most likely a careless nigger and 3 out of tires leaks at the bad seal.

PURE nitrogen isn't affected by temperature, but you can't suck all the air out of a tire and ensure that you have 100% nitrogen inside it. You'd destroy the tire from the vacuum created.

Plus you'll still lose air when the wheel inevitably oxidizes from the air outside too.

That and the fact that the air you are breathing RIGHT NOW is 78% nitrogen means its already got a pretty heavy presence in the tire anyway.

Oh, and you aren't a fucking race car driver. You will literally NEVER be affected by a change of MAYBE, JUST MAYBE 5 PSI in your tires.

Stop shilling out for something that does NOTHING to positively affect the performance of your vehicle.
>>
>>13870809
made me kek m8.
I once saw a video where a man used a cutting torch to seat a bead by putting some of the acetylene in a tire then lighting it with the torch. Needless to say it was pretty spooky.

Nitrogen filled tires have a few purposes, mostly its because nitrogen isn't flammable.

In race cars, should one crash, and a tire gets punctured, its air wont fuel a fire, should there be one.

By this reason alone its used in airplane tires, race cars, space shuttle, anything prone to crashing.

Otherwise nitrogen filled tires for regular use are completely useless.
Obviously the air we breathe, and fill the tires with is 80% nitrogen, the 20% of Oxygen and some traces gases wont harm the tire.
Its already exposed to that mixture on the outside.
Nitrogen molecule is very close in size to oxygen so it doesn't leak out.

There is literally no use to fill your tires with nitrogen, its all a scam.
>>
>>13871257
I've never heard that one before

wouldn't the difference be negligible in a fire, seeing how the car is surrounded by an oxygen source?

30 seconds. Nascar tires are filled with nitrogen, and as you can see it didnt produce a fireball.

The average car exerts 25-30t per square meter all the time. If you have 200mm wide tires and drive 1km you have exerted over 825t of force through your wheels into the road, you clearly need the best gas you can put in there.
>>
>>13869957
Nitrogen is most certainly affected by temperature. Unlike you, I have a mechanical engineering degree.

Nitrogen helps prevent dry-rotting. If you have a vehicle that isn't driven regularly, its good to have the tires filled with it to prolong the life of the tire.
>>
>>13869807
Maybe if it was a superbike it would be acceptable to do but i could never see it being worth doing on a daily driver... the differences would never be noticed.
>>
>>13872422
nitrogen is free pretty much everywhere i have gotten tires on my car in the last 10 years. Even if you dont get tires from them they will check and fill for free. If it is Free, and has a marginal positive increase in function, then it has infinite utility.
>>
>>13870180
The warmer summer air will heat up the tire allowing more grip. It will also melt through snow and ice.
>>
>>13872514
This t.b.h. (to be honest)
>>
For a car on the street you'd have to be a legit moron to pay for nitrogen.

On a race car.. sure. Plenty use nitrogen, argon, and even other more exotic gases. But you have to be getting like 5psi+ increases in tire pressure to make it worth it.
>>
ITT: EVERYBODY IS WRONG

The reason why they fill with nitrogen is so that there is no water vapour inside the tyre. Water steam expands your tyre whe nit gets warmer and from 'hot' tyres from driving.

YOU DO NOT need 100% nitrogen unless you drive a race where tyre patch and rolling resistence need to be calculated precisely.

yes,... i did a ctrl-f for "vapor" and "water" nothing come up besides this one: >>13870198

THE MORE YOU KNOW....
>>
JEEZUS FUCK this thread gives me a headache.

TAKE YOUR SHIT TO b/.
>>
>>13869910
thats exactly what its for.. except the air compressors don't filter out enough moisture which makes it useless.
>>
>>13869807
> Not just putting the green cap on to look rich.

>>13869910
I just check my pressure every so often, and have a foot pump to put air back in the tires.

>>13869957
>and its molecules will not penetrate the sidewall of a tire like regular air does

[citation needed]. Air is 70% nitrogen. How does removing the oxygen and other bits magically stop it diffusing through the rubber?

>>13870049
You laugh, but I actually do have to add winter air to my tires. When the temperature goes from double figures to dipping below zero regularly, it needs a little more pressure.
Come spring, I need to check if it's leaked out sufficiently, or if it's over-pressured.
>>
>>13871183
>land speed record attempts

Land speed record vehicles tend to have solid wheels. At the speeds they get up to, gas-filled tires would just melt. And since they run on slightly soft surfaces, solid wheels give stability.
And if you're running on thrust instead of traction, stability > grip.

No. Every material has some finite temperature-volume relationship.

Also based on the electronic structure of O2 and N2, I would imagine that O2 would permeate rubber more slowly than N2, but I could be exactly wrong on that.
