It usually takes 30 minutes at most to get the hang of it. Anymore and you should go back to auto.

Even for downshifting?

Probably blowing this out of proportion
>>
>>13852965
This.

I brought a truck with a manual, drove it around the lot for about 10 minutes and then drove it home.

Its not to hard, unless you are flat out fucking retarded.

we'll this gives me a lot of confidence

thanks anons
>>
>>13852957
It's easy as shit. Took like 30 minutes to get the hang of it, and took my driving test in it 2 weeks later with maybe 6 hours experience.
>>
>>13852957
What car? The car can make a significant difference in the time it takes to get comfortable.

You're gonna blow the clutch bro that's a 5000 dollar fix you're fucked just walk
>>
>>13852972

You don't need to learn that right away. You can just coast down if needed and then pick another gear afterwards.
>>
>>13853033
This.
First car i practiced driving stick in was a mustang gt and i thought it was pretty difficult. I stalled a good 15 times before getting an alright takeoff. After that i bought a shitbox miata and the clutch was much easier to work with.
It took me a good couple months to get good at downshifting and heel toe.
>>
1. Go to big open, empty parking lot.
2. Practice stop and go in first until you can do it without: a) spinning the wheels, b) stalling, c) taking off without jerking the entire car
3. When at a standstill, push in the clutch pedal, push on the accelerator while still pushing in the clutch pedal to rev to about 1500-2000 RPM
4. Slowly release the clutch pedal while holding the accelerator at 1500-2000 RPM.
5. The car will slowly move forward where you will be able full let off the clutch pedal.
>>
>>13853095
i might wear it out some but doubtful i'll blow it out.
>>13853106
i doubt there will be much downshifting because it is all highway but it still has me kind of worried.
>>
>>13853064
Yeah you're fucked that's not a good car to be learning on.
>>
>>13853131
let's hope not

i'll log my process saturday morning after i get the car picked up

>>13853110
yeah that part isn't so bad and i get that basic
just need to put it in motion
>>
>>13853157

But that part is what gets you in motion so it it ain't so bad and you get that basic then you should be able to move it.
>>
Might be going up from philly to New York to pick up a manual Porsche 944

Never driven manual before, should I be okay if I practice for like 30 min in a lot, as well?
>>
>>13853198
No...
Porsches are known for being hard to drive. Their clutches are really hard with a very precise bite point. I would highly recommend you not doing this.
Bring someone with you who knows how to drive.
>>
>>13853211
>>13853198

You don't quite have it right. They vary depending on the model. From those I drove;

Old 911- Easy clutch (when properly adjusted) tricky gear selection
924- Very easy all around
924 Turbo- hydraulic clutch is annoying, clutch is stiff at bite point but light for the rest of the stroke which needs getting used to.

I think the 944 uses a very similar clutch as the 924 so it should be fairly easy to drive
>>
>>13852957

It's one of those things that are easy to learn, yet hard to master.
>>
>>13853293
Like eating pussy.
>>
>>13853324

>mfw master
>>
>>13852957
You'll stall guaranteed... Pretty much unavoidable. Just practice taking off over and over again and maybe find a parking lot with a slight hill to practice hill starts. You'll be fine. Its easy after a day of driving around.
>>
>>13853324

>SI owner

It's prolly all underage pussy desu
>>
This thread is funny

if the z4m 6 speed manual is anything like my 135i with a 6 speed it's a real easy clutch with a light pedal. Most high powered cars have awful clutch pedals that can be grabby and take more effort to press but I haven't run into this on late model BMWs

The BMWs use a clutch delay valve that makes it almost impossible to stall the car on launch unless you give it zero throttle. Plus they have hill assist on newer ones like the z4m.

This

I learned in an e36 328i, clutch is very forgiving.

Took me 30 minutes to go around the block and another couple hours to go on main streets.

Highway driving is easy
>>
>>13852957
3-4 hours is plenty of time to get the hang of using the clutch.
You'll learn as you go. Most highway driving is just like an auto anyway, just without it randomly changing gear on you.
>>
>>13853110
Ignore this guy.

Every car on the market has more than enough torque to pull from a level start. All you need is good clutch control and nothing else.

Develop good habits from the get go.

overrated to you maybe, shifting gears yourself puts you more in touch and direct control of the car.

>likes cars and driving doesn't like manual gearbox's
>obviously doesn't like cars that much

Automated manuals such as dual clutch gearbox's are a type of automated gearbox, but operate on the same principle as a traditional manual but more advanced and electronically controlled... old slush box trannys with torque converters are completely different.

>and completely shit

manual overrated ? only peoples opinions can be higher than others, the factuality that manuals do indeed let you control more aspects of the car is non debatable.

>likes traditional automatic's = doesn't like or respect cars/driving enough to be on /o

>>13852957
Have you ever driven this route? You should know that the Midwest is flat as fuck. Michigan may have some inclines or declines but at least from my experience driving from Benton Harbor to Chicago, it is flat.

Are you driving into Chicago and driving on surface streets? That may suck for you. Stop and go. Do you have to park in the city? Again that is something to consider.

If you are just driving to a suburb you will be fine. Avoid Chicago expressways from like 6am to 9am and 330pm to 6ish pm on weekdays.

Have fun. You won't regret it.

Also driving to Indy after Chicago? You know you will backtrack if you do that right?

If you have a teacher or friend help you it speeds up the process. I learned in a combined couple of hours over a week. Maybe less than 5 so you're fine. A month for daily driving at ease, years for fine tuning and techniques mastering
>>
>>13863691
>all was well until traffic hold up on freeway
>accident on the shoulder caused a hold up
>stalled 4-5 times people were honking i got over the panic and eventually started going
second event
>got off to get gas cause muh 21 mpg
>ended up stalling a bunch at the gas station because i pulled up the wrong way and had the e-break on
>flustered from that i ended up goign the wrong way and had to double back
>stalled on the exit once with people behind me

either than that i got the hang of stopping / going by the end of it.

going to do more learning tomorrow.

Congrats OP.

I remember when I first picked up this bad boy all the way across town, shit has a 6 puck stage 3 clutch with a biting point the size of my, nvm.

>Get into the car and stall right away a few times.
>The previous owner asks if I need lessons.
>I agree and he brings me to a parking lot and he teaches me the basics.
>I stall, stall, stall, stall, and slowly pick it up
>Pass out in my car and wake up at 1 am
>Muster up the courage and drive to girlfriend's house all the way across town and surprise her.
>Didn't stall once up until I had to back out of her driveway.

It's like riding a bike, I've gotten use to the clutch now.

Not the guy you're replying to, but he's right.
Every car with at least 80Nm of torque can pull only with clutch control in a level road.
>>
>>13867106
My Corolla can't. At least not without an aweful lot of jerking and taking five seconds.
It doesn't need much gas, but it does need some.

Please don't teach someone bad happens when they're starting out. That is one good way to burn your clutch. 1000-1200 is fine if you have a less than 70lbs of torque ecobox
