The Altima and Maxima have good, solid engines (for the most part), but they're coupled with a CVT in a FWD layout. That and the chassis has been designed more about comfort for "muh chilluns" than performance, because ultimately these are both family cars.

The 350z/370z are both good drivers cars, but at the price point, there are better options.

Nissan makes boring cars for boring people. If you have to have a FWD Manual family sedan, there are way better options than the maxima (Acura and Audi come to mind). There are very few FWD that are faster than my car. Besides, it's not about the speed, it's about the driving dynamics and handling. It's physically very difficult to have the front wheels put down lots of power and steer accurately, while maintaining good body dynamics. That's why there aren't any real FWD performance cars. The old Maxima and TL were the closest things to performance FWD cars, but Nissan and Acura both fucked up.

The biggest thing the Altima / Maxima lack is a LSD for that amount of power to the front tires. They were faster, but they had problems with oil burning. Something to do with the VQ35 being a VQ30 bored out too far. Most of their race cars for Super GT/GT3/etc use the VQ30 partly because of that.

The 02 Maxima was also one of the first Nissans to use drive by wire, and having driven both, the 02 was noticeably less responsive and predictable as far as pedal feel goes. Both were SE manuals, the 00 was a 5 speed and the 02 was a 6 speed. The 02 was definitely faster, but the 00 was much more fun to drive.

I've test driven the 370Z and I DD a 350Z. The 370Z is more refined and not as fun to drive then the 350Z. The 350Z is more raw and more sensitive to your input, you feel the road a lot better in the car.

My 14 Maxima will beat an Si, Miata, FRS everyday and still be more practicle.

Exactly, I love Z cars but the new one has no hook. It isn't particularly light but still handles well, it has a V6 that makes adequate power, it looks pretty good, it seats two, it has everything to make it a good car which it is. It just has no hook. The FRS and Miata are light and fun to throw around, pony cars have V8s, BMWs have turbos and are BMWs, Rx8 had the wankel, S2000 needs no explanation, Evo and STI had turbos and awd, the list goes on. The Z does everything well, but nothing exciting. I would go as far to say I think the Z is a better car than the V8 pony cars, but it is less interesting.

For the next generation, if they added a turbo I would say Nissan is cool again. I don't care if they downsize the Z and give it a turbo I4, make it more expensive or keep it the same, it just needs a turbo to make it stand out. That and some better styling, I can't help but think the styling is just a sports car, nothing more or less.

It's more aerodynamic and with less front end lift, better brakes and steering, lower center of gravity, is about 50:50 balanced, compared to the S30.

The engines suck in them, but that's fixable.
