What is faster:

- Mercedes 190 with the 3.2 24v I6 swapped in and a getrag gearchange.
- Volvo 740/940 turbo with boost increased.

I tend to think that the volvo is going to be faster straight line, not so sure about the bends.

OP here. Not a volvo expert, but I've heard that the ones with the red top are easily to tune.

Currently I have a 190 and I'm considering the m104 swap, but volvos are in the same price range as the merc, and if they can be faster w/o swapping or major modifications I could consider a change.

Also heard that 740 and 940 have rear axle. Merc is multilink.

You can find a running E36 M3 for as little as 5k euros, these are the cheapest M3 money can buy, and the 325i and 328i are even cheaper ( both had 192 bhp new )

That is before mods.
I've bought my 190 for 1k in reasonably good shape. A volvo turbo can be had for like 1.5k. M104 engine out of a junkyard is like 500€. So we are talking about lots of hours of man work but not much money involved.

I have another vehicle as DD. This is just my hobby.

I wanted a 328, but with the fucking drift fever prices have doubled in two years.

Agree, it is worth it, also the 3k asked for a 328 coupe in good shape, miata or mr2 2nd gen are reasonable too.

But I am talking about the cheapest rwd performance alternative, and they are not. Clio is not even rwd (although Im sure is faster than most of the others).

Do you kow if there is much weight difference between 2.6 M103 12v (only I6 fitted to 190) and 3.2 M104 24v (most powerful M104 not amg)?

Because using the already i6 as a base I thought the difference will be minor.

Idk the original weight distribution though.

The M104 in this 3.2 24v incarnation has exactly 220hp.

Volvo has used this turbo model in different forms between 155 and 200 hp I think, and it will probably be easy to increase this to 220/230 or even more.

Problem is I do not have any clue of how is a turbo volvo to drive. Is it good, sporty? Can it be modded to something sporty or it is a hopeless barge?

the weight difference is pretty small, maybe 10-15 kilograms.

I6 W201 have nervous rears cause of the heavy engines. maybe you can move the engine some cms to the rear.
I'd prefer the W201 over the Volvo because it's got a >100 mm shorter wheelbase.

Thx for the info, I forgot the sl320 which had as you say 230hp, didn't know what was the difference.

Good thing about w201 is that you can use parts of other mercedes to improve performance, for example seems that it is relatively easy to adapt brakes from sl600.
