If you are looking for a beater, the 318ti will be ideal, but if you are looking for a track car, get a sedan or coupe. While the ti is lighter, it's like a weird lovechild of the E36 and E30, and it lacks the superior multilink suspension and the drivetrain strength of the 6 cylinder models. Parts are also less interchangeable with other models so the parts pool will be shallower.

my m50 has over 200k on it and ive done literally nothing to it except shim the lifters and do vanos seals. m50 is extremely reliable and extremely well documented.

the bmw i6s dont break. have had a 328ci with 240k miles and a 323i with 250k. those engines are literally bulletproof, a stock 2.5l can hold 600hp easily.
