My uncle loves to buy and flip VWs as a hobby, and one thing he's always told me about is the electronics going off on most of them. Certain doors not arming when you hit the lock button, power windows not functioning, etc. Other than the odd electrical issue they're pretty sturdy if you're not retarded. I'm partial to the VR6 GTI, but it's terrible for mileage compared to diesel.

currently drive a mk3 jetta 2.0 aba 5spd. not bad, random electrical issues at times but it runs great. also loads of parts available for it. i recommend getting one with roll-up windows.
