Blew the head gasket. We had just turned at a light and I was going to pull over to take some pics. I looked in the mirror and see tons of white smoke coming out the back of his car. His dad's Alfa blew a head gasket twice in the past 5 years. I think he shifts too high, but that's none of my business.

Try mopar, like a dodge dart, plymouth fury, AMC or something like that. They can be reliable, as comfy as you make it and relatively inexpensive to buy. It needed to be rewired under the hood anyway, but all the dash wiring worked and it just kinda pisses me off that now there's hours more work added. Been thinking of getting some douglas connectors and redoing the whole thing to spec myself as wiring harnesses cost $750 a pop. One of these days...

all of these are an electrical nightmare. Find a friend that knows how to fish wire and read a diagram.

Best way to learn to work on an engine IMO is to buy yourself an old, used lawnmower engine, like a Honda or Kawasaki model with about 8 to 15 horsepower to its name, get the service manual for it, and do a total rebuild down to every conceivable part, hone the cylinder, get new rings, and put it back together.

Don't spend more than $100 for the engine itself, there are lots of chinese clones, at least that is what us amerifats can get them for. I dunno about Britain but I'm sure you can get the same stuff.

Doing this should at least teach you some of the methodology and theory of engine work.

As for MG ownership, Join us! They are great, cheerful, albeit quirky little cars. Most of the time they are mechanically very simple and easy to understand, though sometimes odd things get done.

For finding an MGB, avoid the stromberg Carbs, you want to find one with the SU units with separate manifolds. Also, REBUILD that fuel pump. Old rubber designed for non-ethanol gas can eat through on their insides and lead to big problems.

Oh, the reality of using one daily:

Don't.

You will be much happier with yourself if you make that little car a shining, lovely thing that you *can* drive, but save for those special days, or just a night out on the town, or a warm sunny weekend trip.

Get some cheap POS for driving in the snow and the rain, you'll be much happier not seeing your baby rot away and get parking lot dings.

Yeah, maybe a bit more complicated but that's the idea right there. I'd say probably a small-displacement Japanese bike would be the easiest to start out on, and you could do it all with just basic tools and in a small space.

Just remember: Study your manual carefully, and be sure to ORGANIZE ORGANIZE ORGANIZE. If you sort all your bolts into labeled plastic bins, you'll be a happy camper when it comes together.

It makes me cringe to see when people do a car rebuild up and cry "DISPLACEMENT!, BEEFY CRANK!, HEADERS!, BIG EXHAUST TUBE! STROKE! BORE!" and then their engine runs like SHIIIIT because they didn't sort out the timing or the carburetor adjustments.

You would be amazed as to what kind of results you can get out of any unmodded, freshly rebuilt engine will give if you just take the time to get the timing and the carbs juuuuust right.

The 4.0 Liter inline 6 powerplant and transmissions are ABSOLUTELY dead-solid reliable and will run and run and run and run and run and run... and run. A few passes with a wire cup brush and some fancy undercoating on the bottom and rust is no problem for years.

Hell, the AMC Javelin with Go Package is another one of those rare American pony car gems that are good at twisties as well as dragging.

Here's an electrical tip for you, fellow MG owner.

Some indicator lights on the MG are 3 volt light bulbs with a 70 ohm "Resistor" wrapped around the socket, which really is just a thin steel wire and some paper tape. These bulbs suck donkey dick, I mean they are absolutely awful in every possible way, and they like to burn out really quick, especially when the rust on that steel wire makes it start conducting across it instead of through it and the resistance changes... horrible.

Anyway, long story short, For the little plastic-lensed indicator lamps, a 28 volt incandescent light bulb of the right size will fit right into them. (sometimes you have to take out the spring contacts and just have a wire sticking out the back that is soldered to the bulb's center pin itself, which isn't hard to do)

It is about the right brightness, doesn't have that crap look of an LED in a 50+ year old car, and will last forever, glowing softly.

More Tips and suggestions for whoever wants 'em.

Testors Enamel Paints are fantastic and come in a lot of colors that are otherwise very hard to find. Original Porsche 944 Guards Red color... exactly replicated in Testors paint... MG engine Red... testor's paint. Forget spending $$$$$$$ if you just need a little touch up, just go to your local hobby or train store and pick up a little bottle for a buck or two. And its good paint, too.

Generators, alternators, and positive ground:
unless you have a really good reason to, don't change these things. Generators work fine. A little cleanup of the brushes and you can get tens of thousands of miles service out of a series wound generator. Your classic car doesn't need that much electricity, and your generator is fine.

Positive ground? Leave it. Neg ground and positive ground in the grand scheme of things really don't make too much of a difference in auto electronics, but for what original equipment exists it is often designed to work one way or the other. Realistically speaking, it is SUPER easy to isolate a radio from chassis ground if you want to do an upgrade, and yes, your car radio will work just fine even if its outside metal casing is not grounded to the chassis but is instead tied to the battery.
As for the "corrosion" argument, a 12 volt system will take an eternity and a half to corrode your car's frame. Long story short, just don't bother.

Personally, I believe that the original Lucas electric designs, and many other auto electrics pre-1950 are severely deficient in design. By the way: beware of "Digital" systems that use your original switchgear on your dashboard to control inputs into a microcontroller, etc.

As it turns out, switches are complicated things, and they all have different properties when related to their behavior at different voltages and currents.

For example, a switch designed normally to operate at 1 to 5 amps output probably has either bare copper contacts, or silver plated contacts. There is nothing wrong with this, however these have a notable flaw:

Copper and silver oxidize, and in a short time as well. This doesn't affect the switch operating normally, because when it is turned on, the surge of current passing through it will zap the oxide layer away. However, if this switch is ONLY used to operate a digital input, and is switching microamps instead of amps or miliamps, it can cease to function reliably.

This is why I prefer relays, they work nice.

If you really want a vintage switch to operate a digital output, there are ways of making it happen, of course. If anyone wants to know, let me know, i am still in the thread.

Anyone got any suggestions for chasing down electrical gremlins? I was fucking around with the light switch on my '69 F-250 when I heard a pop from under the hood, opened it up and there was a bunch of smoke from an unknown source, and the truck has no power now. I figured it was the starter solenoid, so I replaced that today but I've still got nothing. It was definitely something to do with the light switch, because the fuse for the lights was fried. Anyone have any input?

Yeah rust is what killed most of them. Mine has some on the bed that is growing but pretty tame to most of the old Fords still lumbering along up here. I got mine in SD since trucks her in WI/MN are mostly rust buckets. When I have a garage I want to get a 70's F100 from AZ that I can use for summer cruising.
