Report: South Korean coast guards fires machine guns in detering

It's reported South Korea's Coast Guards have again fired machine guns at Chinese boats that Seoul claims were illegally fishing in its territorial waters.

The country's Yonhap news agency quoted authorities as saying on Saturday that the South Korean patrol boats fired at around 30 Chinese fishing boats in waters off the Korean west coast.

The Coast Guard said the Chinese boats ignored warnings and infringed the prohibited area and some rammed into the patrol boats.

Coast Guard officials said they used machine guns to drive away the fishing vessels.

No damage or casualties have been reported from either side.

There was no immediate reaction from Beijing on this latest incident.

China had strongly opposed South Korean coastguard's use of any extreme measures against Chinese fishermen following a similar shooting incident less than two weeks ago.

Clashes between Chinese fishermen and Korean coast guards are common in the two country's overlapping exclusive economic zones.

China has called for joint efforts to settle down the dispute.
