Q: Chinese fishing boats were caught fishing illegally in the ROK waters yesterday, and they resisted the ROK coast guard's law enforcement operation. In response, the ROK coast guard fired an M60 machine gun. This is the first time for the ROK coast guard to use crew-served weapon against Chinese fishing boats engaged in illegal fishing. What is your comment on that?

A: We have seen the report. According to the information we have at the moment, no one has been hurt or killed. We are trying to get more details on that.

You just said that the ROK fired a machine gun at Chinese fishermen for the first time. The Chinese side is strongly dissatisfied with the use of force by the ROK side in its law enforcement operation. We have, more than once, made solemn representations with the ROK about its coast guard's use of force in law enforcement operations. The use of destructive weapons against fishing boats in the rough sea will highly likely cause casualties or property losses. The Chinese side once again requires the ROK side to exercise restraint, regulate their law enforcement activities, refrain from applying any extreme measures that may endanger the Chinese people and ensure their safety and lawful rights and interests. As we have already said, the competent Chinese authorities attach great importance to and are working hard to regulate and discipline operations by the Chinese fishermen. We hope that the ROK side can enhance communication and cooperation with us to properly deal with problems emerging in fishery cooperation between our two countries.

S.Korea coast guard fires at Chinese boats
http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1015572.shtml

China's foreign ministry said Wednesday that China was "strongly dissatisfied" since South Korea used deadly weapons against unarmed fishing boats in the action and urged Seoul to "discipline" its coastguard.

"Using destructive weapons can easily injure fishermen and we urge the ROK [South Korea] side to ... avoid using any excessive or extreme tools in their law enforcement activities," spokesperson Hua Chunying said.

"The Chinese side has said many times that responsible government agencies attach great importance to and vigorously strengthening the management and control of Chinese fishermen's activities.

"At the same time, [China] hopes the South Korean side will enhance its communication and coordination with the Chinese side in handling issues occurring in the fishery industry."

The gun fire was obviously a courteous warning.

Nope. However, when a powerful country like that launches its mass of bullshit what can be done? China builds more armed coastguard ships
http://www.janes.com/article/65089/china-builds-more-armed-coastguard-ships

Recent photographs of the Huangpu shipyard in Guangzhou show that a number of China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels are being constructed that will be armed with a 76 mm gun.

The construction of this new class of cutters, based on the design of the 3500-tonne Jiangkai II-class (Type 054A) frigate, was reported by IHS Jane's in June 2016. The first of the the Type 818 class (pennant number 46301) has now been fitted with a 76 mm PJ-26 main gun and work appears to be complete, suggesting it is likely to undertake sea trials shortly.

A second ship (pennant number 46302) is fitting out at Huangpu and recent photographs show that another of the class is being built at Wuchang Shuangliu: a facility on the banks of the Yangtze River developed since 2012.

Also pictured at Huangpu is the lead ship of the Type 718B class of coastguard cutters (pennant number 46111), which is also fitted with the 76 mm gun mounting. Chinese online media reports suggest this ship has recently undertaken sea trials, so it can be expected to enter service in the near future.
Huangpu is also building two more of this class: pennant numbers 45111 and 46112. In addition, a fourth vessel of the class is under construction at the Wuchang shipyard in Wuhan.

The Type 718B is assessed to have an overall length of 100 m, a beam of 16.5 m, and is estimated to displace a little under 2,000 tonnes.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Regular Press Conference on November 4, 2016
>Q: The ROK Foreign Ministry spokesperson reportedly said that the ROK side only used force in its law enforcement because the Chinese fishing vessels engaged in illegal fishing. What is your response to that?

A: Yesterday afternoon, the official in charge of consular affairs of the Chinese Foreign Ministry met with the Minister of the ROK Embassy in China for representations and restated China's position.

China holds a consistent and clear position on the use of weapons by the ROK in their law enforcement operations. The Chinese side is firmly opposed to any extreme move that may threaten people's security. Violations by the Chinese fishermen must not be used as an excuse for the resort to firearms by the ROK coast guard or other public power authorities.

It needs to be pointed out that the fishery issue between China and the ROK has been there for long and cannot be resolved at one stroke. Both time and wisdom are needed for its settlement. The Chinese side has been taking effective measures and working hard to educate and discipline its fishermen and fishing boats. The number of rule-breaking fishing boats this year has declined sharply compared with last year. It is hoped that the ROK will work with China to properly view and deal with the relevant issue from a scientific and long-term perspective, keep calm and exercise restraint in law enforcement, ensure the safety of Chinese fishermen and their properties and safeguard the overall interests of bilateral relations.

After the press conference, the following question was asked: The ROK side released the result of the investigation into the death of three Chinese crew members in a fire on a Chinese fishing boat. What is your response to that?

Hua Chunying: The Chinese side does not accept the unilateral conclusion made by the ROK side on the investigation without the presence of China. The Chinese side is definitely relevant to the case as those involved in the case were Chinese citizens and Chinese fishing boat. As the flag country and in accordance with international practices, the Chinese side has the right to participate in the investigation. The Chinese side once again urges the ROK side to carry out a joint investigation with China in a comprehensive, objective, just and professional way, and provide reasonable compensation and offer assistance to families of the deceased with a sense of responsibility and in the spirit of humanitarianism.

>Chinese parochialism
https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/opinon/2016/11/202_217705.html

China has only one rule of settling things with its neighbors - its way or the highway.

It treats Taiwan like an errant student for showing a hint of what it sees as a move for self-determination, despite their agreed-upon principle of "one China, two systems." It cruelly squashes the rights of the people of Hong Kong, going back on its promise of granting them special status.

Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore as well as other countries in the region have grounds to be concerned about China's aggression over territorial disputes, for instance. Remember Beijing scoffed at the ruling against it by an international court in its dispute with the Philippines over sovereignty in the South China Sea.

By this unilateral standard, Beijing is applying pressure on South Korea, over the latter's decision for self-protection by allowing the U.S. to deploy missile interceptors against North Korea's increasing nuclear and missile threats. South Korea's neighborly efforts to explain the necessity of the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) have fallen on deaf ears in China.

China has gone against an international effort to punish the North for its fourth nuclear test in September, although it has said it opposes the North's nuclear armaments because of its threat against regional peace and stability.

In dealing with Seoul, Beijing has acted in a condescending and rude way. China has kept mum about a "return" visit by Defense Minister Han Min-koo following up his Chinese counterpart Chang Wanquan's visit to Seoul in February last year. It has also failed to respond to calls for the annual vice ministers' meeting held since 2011. These moves come on the heels of Chinese Ambassador Qiu Guohong‘s threat that Seoul would pay the price for its THAAD decision.
>>
>>82420
True, China is big and powerful both militarily and economically. That alone can't let it gain the kind of respect it is eager to have if it bullies its neighbors, ignores international laws and fails to keep its end of the deal with other countries.

Beijing leaders are advised to pay attention to the history of their own ethnic heritage, the Han tribe that most of them belong to, being attacked by tribes rising from the fringes for, among other reasons, insisting on "my-way-or-the-highway" policies with neighbors.

They may continue to act like they have been doing this but at the risk of repeating history.

It's time for China to stop being puerile and mature to the level of its newly found power and riches. The world needs a grown-up China that balances its own interests with those of others. Learn from the U.S., even for the lack of a better example.

It is but it isn't because the nation's that do it like South Korea and China to list two of many would be very butchers because they engage heavily in it.

For example since Somali pirates declined now foreign vessels illegally fishing in Somali waters is HIGHER pretty pirates. These illegal fishers do this to many countries and fuck with their fishing stock after ducking up their own back home, over fish and fuck over locals fishers hard-core. Call me edgy but I have absolutely zero empathy for illegal fishing in foreign waters especially if it's some Chinese boat fishing in fucking Argentina waters months ago (AND THEY RAMMED THE ARGENTINIAN COAST GUARD). If someone got hurt or killed I'd be edgily glad.

Q: It is reported that the ROK and Japan have signed the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) in Seoul on November 23 to share confidential security information. What's your comment?

A: We have taken note of the relevant report. Intensified cooperation between relevant countries based on the deeply entrenched Cold War mentality for the sharing of military intelligence will only worsen the confrontation on the Korean Peninsula, and add to insecurity and instability in Northeast Asia. It runs counter to the trend of peace and development and the common interests of countries in the region. The current situation on the Korean Peninsula remains complex and sensitive. While carrying out military cooperation, relevant countries should take seriously the security concerns of regional countries and contribute more to regional peace and stability, rather than the opposite.

>Chinese expert: THAAD in Korea will be first target in case of China-U.S. conflict

SEOUL, Nov. 22 (Yonhap) -- A former Chinese diplomat warned that the U.S. anti-missile system to be deployed in South Korea could be the first target for a Chinese attack if conflict breaks out between the two superpowers.

Yang Xiyu, a senior research fellow at the China Institute of International Studies, also said the installment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system will bring a significant change to China's relations with South Korea, prompting Beijing to "re-think" the burgeoning bilateral partnership.

"The warm degree of China and South Korea may change. For example, last year, the degree was pretty high. We had a very good relationship. But if the THAAD deployment will be brought about, the degree will change," Yang Xiyu told Yonhap News Agency on the sidelines of a seminar held in Korea late last week.

He served as head of the Chinese foreign ministry's office dealing with Korean Peninsula issues in the mid-2000s and was involved in the now-suspended six-party denuclearization talks.

In July, South Korea and the U.S. announced a plan to place the missile shield by end-2017 to beef up defense against the growing threat from North Korea.

The decision drew strong opposition from China. Beijing immediately protested that THAAD, which is equipped with the powerful X-band radar, could hurt its strategic security interests.

During the seminar Yang said that Beijing is preparing all necessary measures including diplomatic and military ones with regard to the THAAD deployment on the peninsula.

"I am not meaning broken (relations). Good friends, normal friends and just colleagues are quite different because of strategic considerations," he said to Yonhap News. "We need to re-think the China-South Korea partnership."

U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp: North Korea is greatest threat to world peace
http://www.thedickinsonpress.com/news/north-dakota/4153123-heitkamp-north-korea-greatest-threat-world-peace

Heitkamp's group spent considerable time in South Korea, including visiting the demilitarized zone.

"Anyone who thinks that Kim Jong-un is crazy is wrong," said Heitkamp, referring to the North Korean leader. She said her dad used to use the phrase "crazy like a fox." That phrase means someone is seemingly foolish but in fact extremely cunning.

"He (Kim Jong-un) wants the whole world to think he's an irrational actor when all of his actions have been rational if you deal with the assumptions that he lives under. He clearly is very much a disruption agent in the region and he clearly is looking to create a capacity to endanger the homeland in the United States of America. He clearly wants that power, he wants that authority. We have to do everything we can to make sure he doesn't get it, and that we continue to support our ally," she said of her visit to South Korea. She said South Korea has an "incredibly talented military."

"Pushing back against North Korea is a day-to-day thing," she told the committee, a part of the Minot Area Chamber of Commece.

RFA: China Building Border Military Facilities to Prepare for N. Korea's Collapse

China is reportedly constructing large-scale military facilities in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Region in northeastern Jilin Province just north of the border with North Korea.

Radio Free Asia said Saturday that Chinese military authorities began to evacuate local residents at Kaishantunzhen in Longjing City to another area in August in preparation for the construction of a large military base. The report said heavy construction equipment is currently being brought into the area.

The U.S. international broadcaster quoted a source as saying that North Korea also built an observation post at the top of a mountain across from the border to monitor the Chinese military move.

An ethnic Korean resident in Longjing claimed that the Chinese leadership seems to be preparing for the collapse of the Kim Jong-un regime.

S.Korea:At least 2 million people gather in South Korea for fifth week of protests against Pres Park
At least two million people are expected to be part of a nationwide rally in South Korea on Saturday (26 November), organisers said. The rally has been organised to protest against scandal-hit President Park Geun-hye.

According to the organisers of the demonstration, some 1.5 million will gather in the capital city of Seoul and 500,000 in other regions demanding Geun-hye's resignation. The 26 November rally is expected to be the biggest since the demonstrations began.
Members of the Korean Peasants League, the country's largest farmers' group, are also expected to join the demonstration in Seoul.

The farmers had intended to bring around 1,000 tractors and other machinery near the government quarter as part of the protest, but were barred by a court order.

Members of the Korean Peasants League, the country's largest farmers' group, are also expected to join the demonstration in Seoul.

According to local media reports, the farmers — who came on tractors and other vehicles — were stopped from entering the capital. They were later allowed to enter, but on foot.

The farmers had intended to bring around 1,000 tractors and other machinery near the government quarter as part of the protest, but were barred by a court order.

On 19 November around 500,000 people took part in a peaceful candlelit rally, organisers claimed. But police said the number was far lower.

Geun-hye has been embroiled in a political controversy over accusations of allowing her friend, Choi Soon-sil, to access government documents without authorisation. Choi is accused of trying to extract a large amount of money from the country's companies and is under arrest on charges of fraud and abuse of power.

While South Korea's constitution does not allow a ruling president to be prosecuted, under a new law passed by opposition parties using their parliamentary majority on 17 November, it is possible that Geun-hye could be impeached for breaking the law.

It's the collectivist mentality of their cultures that spans back thousands of years, combined with the fact that in more recent times a lot of them have been exploited by western cultures, leading them to cling desperately to their old ways, whether they're good for them or not.

End result is an incoherent, frothing-at-the-mouth brand of nationalism that spreads from community to community like a virus because people there are conditioned to follow the leader rather than act independently like here in the West.
