This is pretty common. All my black co-workers socialise with each other before anyone else, always move to sit with each other at meetings etc.

Another aspect is the shit from individual -isms to institutional -isms. Gathering and making black communities always has been a been a big part of African American culture. Historically is was much more relevant way to fight oppression, be it externally through civil rights, or internally through gathering like church where you can just feel at ease. A lot of that has carried over to present day. I spent 3rd grade and up in a school that was extremely diverse. Perhaps 60 percent was white and the rest various minorities, but even then there were very few black people. Around this time usually your parents start teaching you about black history which can at times make you feel pretty shitty. I would say I was an extreme case with a good amount of my lack of confidence originating from other issues in my life or even just puberty, but there be times where I would just be sad that I was born black in a "world that hates me". If it weren't for the BBQ's, family gathering and various other black community events I started going a bit later I could've been a bit worse off mentally. If I had been in an area with more black people Im sure I would've been a bit better.

Anyway this is just my two cents from my own experiences from my own little southern California community. I can't really comment much on other parts of the country but I feel generally its the same. Its just a matter of comfort. The community is safe, so if that's what you are used to and that's what you grew up with, your probably going to stick to it. This can be good but also a bit counterproductive in cases such as this where a preference is so clearly stated. I personally don't agree with it but can understand it. Usually though, things aren't so exclusive. There are always several non-blacks at the events I went to and the most exclusiveness I've seen is some people being pretty cliquey. For this case though, Im willing to bet if someone that wasn't black came to them as said hey, I really need a place to stay, they would consider it.

Yeah, our fraternities always had to be conscious of the fact that we were almost all white, in spite of the campus being far more diverse.

That said, Asians don't usually want to join frats, and blacks have their own frats or they tend to coalesce in one (partly because there's so few). Even Jews have their own frats -- in fact the frat on my campus with Jewish National had exactly one Jew, while a non-denominational frat on my campus had exactly one non-Jew. People naturally coalesce in that way I guess.

I agree 100 percent. My wife is 100% black but is successful and only dates white men. She had a full scholarship to college, made money off of scholarships and grants.

Her family calls her an Uncle Tom for being with me, and they will give money to all of her brothers and sister who are in and out of jail. They would never help us if we needed it though, luckily we never have needed it
