>Louisiana's hate crime law already protects vulnerable minorities from attacks based on their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation, but state lawmakers want to add another group to the mix: cops.

>The state's House and Senate have already approved the measure — dubbed the the "Blue Lives Matter bill" — and it just needs the signature of Governor John Bel Edwards in order to become law. Edwards is expected to approve the bill, which also covers firefighters, paramedics, and other first responders.

>The phrase "Blue Lives Matter" became a counter-slogan to the Black Lives Matter movement, which grew out of the officer-involved killings of Eric Garner in New York and Michael Brown in Ferguson in the summer of 2014. The incidents — and subsequent grand jury decisions not to indict the police officers responsible — sparked outrage and protests across the US.

>Some police advocates assert that the Black Lives Matter movement has fostered an anti-law enforcement climate, though the evidence used to support that claim is murky. The number of "ambush killings" of police officers has declined in recent years — the Washington Post found that about 9.5 such incidents have occurred each year across the country since 2000 — but by March of 2016 there had already been five.

>According to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, a total of 124 officers died in the line of duty in 2015, a 4 percent increase from 2014. But only 42 of those were shot and killed, and fatal shootings of officers actually fell 14 percent between 2014 and 2015. The overall rate of officers being killed in the line of duty remains far lower than it has been in previous decades.

While I think it's reasonable for assaulting public servants to result in harsher sentences(the fact that US cops aren't always acting the part is fairly irrelevant), classifying it as a hate crime seems weird.

shut up nigger they exist coz you´re dangerours
>>

Well, it could be due to the growing idea that all cops are the same and how people automatically judge someone just for being a cop.
It's a weak argument, but it's all I can think of.

This is just a wedge issue being promoted by people who don't understand statistics to get those who hate the police and those who love the police relied up (i.e. bait).

The police are important institution in society. Their job can be dangerous and officers need to be protected. However, the protection of officers should be based on reality not political wedge issues.

Most dangerous job is in terms of gun violence...
taxi driver.

Most common way for a cop to die while on duty...
accident (including car, motorcycle, and being struck by a vehicle). Cops still don't like to wear seat belts

Number of cops killed each year.
1995 -184
1996 -140
1997 -173
1998 -171
1999 -145
2000 -162
2001 -241
2002 -159
2003 -150
2004 -165
2005 -163
2006 -156
2007 -192
2008 -149
2009 -125
2010 -161
2011 -171
2012 -131
2013 -109
2014 -122
2015 -123

Average = 164 per year.
http://www.nleomf.org/facts/officer-fatalities-data/year.html

Number of cops shot per year (2005-2014)
05 -60
06 -54
07 - 70
08 - 41
09 - 50
10 - 60
11 - 73
12 - 50
13 - 33
14 - 48

Average over the past decade = 53

Cops were most likely to die by being shot during prohibition and the rate far exceeds anything we see today. And, the year with the most police deaths was 1930.

If there was a war on the police (in terms of gun violence), it needs to be significantly higher than the average for the past 10 years. It seems in the last 10 years there has been a range of as few as 33 and as many as 73 per year. Moreover, the discrepancy between the various years can be huge, from 70 to 41 which is a difference of 29 in a single year.

Really, if wanted to pass a law that would nearly guarantee police lives would be saved, it would be to have them wear their seat belts. But, stay riled up and give the gov more power to punish because of fabricated wedge issues.

What is the difference between attacking and resisting? What do they consider to be an attack? I fully expect that if I fart near a cop they will claim it as a hate crime.

2001 counting cops responding to 9/11 that were in the second building when it collapsed?

* in before liberals on the federal level over-rule it because they object to the notion that the lives of cops and whites mattering, and refuse to have anything written into law that would suggest that attacking either is a hate crime
>>

This will totally stop people from attacking cops
>>
>>45891
Hate crime is a retarded notion that should be abolished. It codifies the idea that only certain malicious acts are actually hateful, which is convoluted doublethink.
La. Police should be embarrassed by this proposal.
>>
>>46053
I think using police deaths alone is a bit misleading. You should look at police assaults in general.
>According to statistics collected by the FBI, 96 law enforcement officers were killed in line-of-duty incidents in 2014. Of these, 51 law enforcement officers died as a result of felonious acts, and 45 officers died in accidents. In addition, 48,315 officers were victims of line-of-duty assaults. The 2014 edition ofLaw Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted, released today, includes comprehensive data tables about these incidents, brief narratives describing the fatal attacks, and narratives regarding selected assaults resulting in injury.

Why do we even have hate crime laws.

A crime is a crime is a crime. Why should it be More Illegal to hurt someone based on x y z? Isn't hurting people illegal enough?
>>
>>46091

That probably explains part of the bump in 2001 but depending on which source is used it is anywhere from 60 to 73 out of the 240.

>>46123
If you think we should look at assaults then give us at least a decade of of stats. The difference from one year to the next can be pretty large when it comes to police deaths and it might be the same for assault. This was the whole point of the post.

Also, you will have to explain if the assaults were convictions or police themselves simply charging suspects with assault. Also, when it comes to stats on crime criminologists use official police reports but cross reference them with other reports (victim survey, etc.) since the police have some discretion on whether or not to charge someone and how they frame their police reports. Looking at assaults is important but certainly a difficult stat to collect accurately.
