Democratic candidates in Iowa and upstate New York have dropped out of political races in recent weeks, citing physical threats and concern for their families’ safety.

Hours after discussing his bid for mayor in Binghamton, New York on local radio in April, Michael Treiman said he was emailed threats directed at his wife and children. The same evening, someone driving by his home yelled “liberal scumbag,” and hit him with a soda container while he was holding one of his toddlers.

Treiman said last week he has moved away from his hometown of 32 years, but will run for Binghamton mayor again when he can afford to hire a private security team. The local Democratic National Committee (DNC) said June 10 it still not had found a candidate to replace him, and has named a “placeholder.” To run, candidates must collect signatures from party members by mid-July, so the window to name one is “quickly closing,” the committee said.

Kim Weaver, an Iowan candidate for the House of Representatives, dropped out of the race on June 3, citing “very alarming acts of intimidation, including death threats.” Weaver said she would support whoever runs against her opponent Steve King, and transfer the funds she’s raised to their campaign. That primary will be held in November of 2018, and judging from past Iowa elections a candidate can be named as late as that August.

King, who is known for quoting right-wing extremists, and predicting minorities would kill each other before becoming a majority in America, said he thought Weaver was lying about the death threats, and accused Democrats of driving her out.

Nationally, the election of Donald Trump has sparked a huge uptick in brand-new candidates for Democratic elections—by late April, the number of Democrats registered to run in 2018 political races had jumped 58% from the last mid-term elections in 2014. A representative from the DNC said these two races were an aberration. “Up-and-down the ballot, Democrats are coming out in droves to run against Trump and a GOP establishment that is trying to repeal health care and rob public schools so they can give more tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires,” said a DNC spokesman at the committee’s national headquarters in Washington, DC. “There’s no denying the amount of energy on our side of the political divide.”

Still, threats of violence are part of a larger pattern, political experts worry. Last week, Eric Trump, the president’s son, referred to his father’s critics as “not even people” and singled out Democrats, who he said were trying obstruct a “great man.” Montana Republican Greg Gianforte was reelected last month after physically assaulting a reporter. (Gianforte has since pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and will not serve any time in jail.)

“I can’t remember a time when we had candidates of party X pulling out because of threats from party Y,” said Christine Fair, a professor at Georgetown University’s Center for Peace and Security Studies who has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration. The most recent developments show that there are “some Republicans who are not going to let go of power,” she said, and are “willing to use violence to hang on to it.”

You see, this is what winning looks like. This is how you know that what we are doing over on /pol/ is having an effect. Almighty KEK be praised, we're spreading and we're winning.
>>
i'd really like to see proof of any of that

it seems crass to ask for proof about receiving death threats but pay attention for 30 seconds to the recent election and people smearing ketchup over themselves and screaming >muh nazis beat me up!!!!!

anyway, i really doubt any of this happened.

>>149478
>Lefty Bern out shoots GOP whip

Here the Anti Trump media concocts sappy sob story about meany right wingers and ((death threats)) to regain the moral high ground
>>
>>149484

They're straight up dropping out of the race. It's hard to use this as a political tool to drum up support if you're not even running. Plus given the recent shooting I'd expect candidates on both sides to be more nervous about this sort of thing. That 58% increase in candidates also indicates that there's a lot more inexperienced guys on board, and they're probably not up to the pressure of dealing with threats like the veterans are.

And then you have idiots like >>149483 who are probably stuffing candidates' email boxes (and maybe physical mailboxes) full of threats, magnifying the problem beyond what it really is. Couple that with regular people not being very good at figuring out which threat is a genuine or a hoax and it just increases the perceived stress even further.
>>
Hey I just came from a thread about the Bernie supporter shooter. After reading a lot of self-serving bragging about how one side is evil I'm in shock to see this.
>>
Dems and republicans are being threatened these days. GOP building vandalized, etc. Just a shit show all around. People don't know how to get what they want during partisan gridlock, so they do this dumb shit.
>>
>>149480
>“not even people”
no different then constantly calling everyone on the right evil nazis.
>>
>>149491
This is what I never understood. I consistently see people claiming that treating all Muslims like terrorists will prompt a portiom of them to become terrorists. Yet these same people go around calling all Republicans extremists and then get surprised when they fight back. It just makes no sense.

Nobody is saying liberals are incapable of violence or that folks on the left haven't been guilty of violence.

But the consideration of folks on the right also engaging in violence and threats to cause opposition politicians to drop out of the race is still a real concern along with that.

And more of a concern is that politicians on the right like Steven King and Donald Trump or the other dude who assaulted a journalist, instead of decrying that behavior like virtually everyone in the left wing media and every left wing politician that has spoken out has done, instead are actively encouraging that level of dialogue and actively egging on violence.

If you're on the political right, you may not be able to control the behavior of individual supporters, that is understandable, but you can at least demand of your politicians that they refuse to associate with violent or threatening folks and that they call out this sort of behavior when it does happen.
>>
>>149532
I think the left, like Muslims, are beating out everyone in the violence
>>
>>149559
you think wrong.
in any case, the responsibility is on the politicians and the platform to discourage violence.
the left does, the right frequently enough does not.
>>
Isn't that the point of political social media posting and shows like the daily show?

Nobody wants to be the revolutionary on the street. You can spam vitriol and anger online until some fringe looney murders people for you.

Now we are seeing people just embrace it. It's what they wanted all along.

Armchair revolutionaries.

Give me an example of a Christian suicide bombing or Trump supporter shooting a Congressmen or beating someone over the head with a bike lock

>But muh death threats
>>
>>149577
Jared Lee Loughner
Dylann Roof
Timothy Mcveigh
Silent Brotherhood
James Jackson
Jeremy Christian
FEAR militia

List goes on. If republicans aren't responsible for/don't own any of those, then great, that's how it should be. By the same rule though, the left aren't responsible for this wacko's decisions.
There are unstable idiots following both ideologies in this brain-dead country, fanning the fire with more partisanship just makes the crazies feel more special.
And every congressman gets death threats, they're lying if they say they don't. The only difference is that the current reps choose to ignore them or hire security. These two candidates decided the added stress wasn't worth it. Considering how the media hypes up partisan attacks to obscene levels, I don't blame them.

>Jared Lee Loughner - 2011
>Dylann Roof - 2015*
>Timothy McVeigh - 1995
>Silent Brotherhood - 1983-84*
>James Jackson - 2017*
Jeremy Christian - 2017**
>FEAR militia - 2012

>*hating minorities is not part of the Republican platform and white supremacists can fall on either side of the political spectrum
>**unclear political affiliation given support for the Sanders campaign

I get your point on partisanship being a problem and completely agree. Just wanted to annotate your list a bit by adding dates of activity and a rudimentary analysis.

On a side note, I was shocked how little media coverage the EGS shooting got. The story had everything to make a really interesting click bait article.

burgerlandistan, i feel for you

time to revv up your final solutions

Loughner was a Rand loving libertarian and was described by friends as "liberal." He had nothing to do with the Right Wing. Also your entire faggoty spiel is pretty useless when a guy tried to assassinate Trump and he got on TV and was treated as normal.
>>
>>149605
Alright now I'm going to quantify that with a list of Leftists and Muslims. It's going to take a while. Maybe ill find some time today

They're probably dropping out of races they have no chance of winning and coming up with this BS to save face.

Good.

All of those fucking commies should die.

Purge this nation of this socialist filth and let the capitalists reigns supreme.

Killing them is too kind. Did the Nazis quickly kill degenerates? No, they drew out the suffering because that is what liberals deserve.

False dichotomy; they're not mutually exclusive.
In fact, cooperating toward a common good is usually in long term national interest.
