My filipina friend thinks that this is a complete lie that was used to justify martial law. She doesn't think Abu Sayaff was large enough to warrant martial law on an entire island, and she's worried it'll spread to manila as an enforcement measure.

It's possible.
>that nam era chopper with m60s
do they have any chance?

I don't think so. I think Martial Law was declard to be able to contain the threat with strict enforcement and nothing more.

As another Filipino, I'll say that that's conspiracy theory-tier and not even a good and convincing one.
This whole thing started when the military got word that their leader was in the city and raided a house there, but as it turns out they were preparing for a takeover for a long time, and decided to launch the attack prematurely and go guns blazing.
The ones peddling this theory that it was all staged have this (misguided) perception that Duterte is an autocrat in the making, and naturally see every action he takes as a step to becoming a dictator for life, and this seems to confirm it for them. I am of a different opinion, and most other Filipinos are, that's what I can say about it.
>hundreds killed
>hundreds of thousands displaced
>tens of thousands still trapped
>major city in US ally now a warzone
>siege has been underway for two weeks
How the fuck is this not headline news? I can barely find anything on it in English (not counting that weird broken english that filipino news agencies seem to use). If this had happened in the US, we'd be calling it the second 9/11.
