Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives strengthened their position as the largest party in an election in the small state of Saarland on Sunday, in a boost to her quest to win a fourth term in Germany's Sept. 24 national election, exit polls showed.

Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) fetched 41 percent of the vote in the Saarland, up from 35.2 percent in the last election there in 2012, an exit poll for broadcaster ARD showed. The Social Democrats (SPD) won 29.5 percent, down from 30.6 percent. [L5N1H308W]

Like federal Germany, Saarland is currently governed by a 'grand coalition' of the CDU and the SPD.

The result leaves the CDU short of sufficient support to rule alone in the state. The SPD and the far-left Linke, which won 13 percent, also lack enough votes to form a left-leaning coalition in the state assembly.

Non-German here. What's the difference between a christian democrat and a social democrat?
>>
>>125855
Christian democrats are moderate rightists.

Social democrats are moderate leftists.

So it seems like Merkel is considered leftist among her own party? I never understood how she stays in power for so long.
>>
>>125861
In a way, yes. She is seen as slightly leftist compared to the rest of her party. She has remained in power because it would simply be to difficult to take her place. There are no term limits for a Bundeskanzler, so after a few elections, she simply ran on reputation alone. By running someone against her, the CDU would sacrifice party unity. This continues up to this day.

Merkel's politics really depends on her coalition partner as she understands herself as a mediator between the coalition.
Right now she is in a leftwing coalition with the Social Democrats. When she was in a coalition with the rightwing liberals FDP her politics were a little bit more rightwing.
Unfortunately FDP was vote kicked out of parliament and now we're stuck with the leftwing grand coalition nobody's happy with.
But luckily SPD now thinks that they can take over by trying to (literally) meme Schulz into Bundeskanzler which seems to result in non-voters going to vote to prevent a complete leftist government which benefits Merkel's conservative party as shown in Saarland (boost by 5%)

If FDP makes it back we might get a liberal rightwing coalition again.

German and most european politics are not really comparable to the US. They're far more moderate in most cases, in contrast to the left-right american dichotomy.
>>
>>125861
It's Europe, they're all leftists
>>
Has Merkel changed Germany's refugee policies in light of recent problems?
>>
>>125953

Actually yeah. Turkey Deal that prevents refugees coming to Europe was her work. Also they increased the number of refugees sent back. She's under constant attack by the left and her coalition partner though.

>President Trump spoke to German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday to congratulate her party on winning a key election over the weekend, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said.

Funny, in german news it says
>Trump congratulates Merkel on her victory in a state election. It's unusual for a US president to congratulate a chancellor for winning an insignificant state election. Is he confusing something?
>Literally "lol is he retarded?"
