During the election and his presidential inauguration, Mr Trump declared Nato "obsolete" but has since modified his stance, telling European leaders the alliance remains of strategic importance.

Nope, look this shit up.
The 2% goal is something most members have agreed to work their way up to by 2024.
The original NATO charter just says they have to "maintain and develop their individual and collective capacity to resist armed attack.", with no numbers given.
Iceland was given a special exception since they don't have a military to begin with.

Trump also seems to think the 2% is money owed to the U.S. which was never the case.

Funny thing is, according to British Intelligence, Carter Page was paid an unspecified broker fee on a 1.9 billion dollar Russian company sale in exchange for (among other things) getting Trump to chastise NATO members for not spending more on their military.
He was also supposedly paid to have the GOP remove military aid for the Ukraine from their party platform, which did happen, at the Trump campaign team's insistence.
