Can we talk about space travel?
What types of vehicles are companies currently developing and using?
What are the current short and long term goals of said companies?
I'm particularly interested in seeing what SpaceX is capable of in the coming years. They successfully landed their 6th Falcon 9 1st stage last night (the 4th to land on a droneship). Their current schedule aims to launch a 'used' rocket as well as Falcon Heavy for the first time this fall, test the in-flight abort system and life support systems of Crew Dragon early next year followed by the first manned mission to the ISS by summer of next year.
Space blimps when?

I don't understand this quote
Out with the old shuttle work platforms, in with the new SLS ones (half of them so far). A ton of money being spent at the KSC to prep for Orion.

>>994085
>soviet high-speed rail
>>994056
Rockets are transportation desu. People ride them at incredible speeds while going fast and they ferry cargo to and from the Earth.
>>994083
My only complaint is that NASA is making relatively slow progress, being a government funded entity and all. I wish a small slice of the typically military funding could be diverted toward NASA each year. Then again who knows what kind of space technology the military sector is developing as well. The Air Force has their mysterious little space shuttle that seems to be very 'hush hush'.
>>994146
Obama decided NASA needs to focus on outreach to brown people.
SpaceX is okay, I'm waiting for transportation to the moon and Venus though.
>>994056
Engineering vehicles for transportation is engineering, not science.
>>994081
I watched the director's commentary: if I remember correctly he just saw it in some random place and thought "neat, I think it means that no one really knows what they're doing in life, so they just try to go forwards in life anyways"
>>994182
Fucking nips man
>>994555
Those silly Rushkies.. 'For you see Ivan, if we are to be reaching into the space we must strap more rockets onto rocket, for to be going fast while flying at incredible speeds'
the Russian program really likes trains
rockets are big.
>>994559
I'm not sure what you're laughing at; the basic Soyuz design is one of the most successful and reliable designs ever. That's why the US still rely on Soyuz to reach ISS.
>>995185
No, that isn't why at all.
>>995192
No, the US rely on Soyuz because instead of building a reliable rocket, they built an expensive boondoggle (that was also far less reliable than Soyuz).

Gonna need a timestamp of your dick to see that it's really you. With a legitimate filename.
I am hoping they get somewhere with the single stage to orbit stuff such as the Skylon project using the SABRE engine. I don't really understand how it all works, but I think it pulls oxygen from the air, compresses and cools it, then mixes with onboard hydrogen and burns it. Apparently in lower altitudes it can function like a regular jet engine, but at high altitudes it functions as a rocket

>>995478
SSTO is a pipe dream for anything larger than crew transport in the near future. Reusable VTVL rockets are the most realistic way we can cut costs.
>>995571
>SSTO is a pipe dream for anything larger than crew transport in the near future.
Sure but that's a hell of a saving in real terms; crew & re-supply to the ISS is a major cost, and if you could cut that significantly with SSTO that'd be huge.
The long term future of stuff like SABRE is probably ballistic passenger flights. Which will also be huge.
There is only one answer.

Someone send this to Elon Musk.

>>998390
It has basically nothing to do with rocketry. They said that their lowest estimate for its mass would be 1.3 times the mass of the Earth which is a complete no go for humans even if we had the technology to reach it in less than 20 years.
Huge disappointment today in Cape Canaveral. What do you guys think happened? The explosion originated near the upper oxygen fuel tank during fueling. Really hoping it was a pad equipment failure and not the vehicle itself..
https://youtu.be/qEPcb-FpEcc
>>1001094
Ouch. You can see the payload faring just fall off rather than be obliterated in the initial explosion.
>>1001115
I am cry. Why do bad things happen to good people? SpaceX is doing some seriously cool stuff, I hate to think what kind of delays this will cause them.
>>1001120
They aren't good people. If they were good, SpaceX would be a nonprofit organisation. But I agree that they do interesting things.
>>1001121
How would they continue to advance their technology and build bigger, better rockets if they weren't bringing in a profit?
>>1001123
You don't seem to understand how a nonprofit works. How do Mozilla, Wikimedia, OpenBSD, or other foundations continue to improve? By investing money back into the product.

>>1001223
If you know anything about rocketry it's a fucking miracle that we've managed to launch a single rocket in human history to LEO, let alone the number we've put up there.
I'm not going to suck SpaceX's dick, but I doubt this launch will be much of a setback for them. SpaceX will take a loss and Zuckerberg will just have to build another satellite.
>>1001264
The funniest thing about Suckerberg being butthurt is that it wasn't even his satellite. He just paid for bandwidth usage for 5 years of its expected 15 year life.
>>1001125
I'm pretty sure there are some serious regulations and requirements that go into being granted non-profit status. I would imagine raising the amount of capital that SpaceX requires would be extremely difficult or impossible through donations and grants.
I bet planning capital expenditures years into the future would be really difficult as would taking orders years into the future from commercial satellite customers.
I doubt SpaceX could met the requirements for non profit status even if they wanted to.
space travel will become a thing once it is as safe as air travel
FTL when?
No really, when
>>995635
I know it's joke and all but regardless I'd like to make it clear that most of the rockets energy is used to reach incredible speeds to reach LEO or GEO so that the things they send up there don't have to use fuel to stay up there. If it's just reaching space you can do it with single stage but you cannot maintain orbit.

>>994049
Hey guys what'd I miss?
>>1004555

Is Elon Musk a meme?
If going to space just means going fast, why do we not put the rockets on high speed trains and then launch when the trains are fast?
>>1011103
Because trains can't even break the sound barrier.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1YxNYiyALg
>>1011491
Tried to watch it live at work, because union job with nothing to do, but couldn't get good enough signal to stream. Watched it a little while ago though, made my pee pee hard. It was so awesome to see the simulation of the ITS and not only have Elon say 'This isn't just an artists depiction of what it might look like, this is based off of the designs that we have and are already working on.' but to also have video of the first Raptor engine firing yesterday and pictures of the carbon fiber fuel tank already built. It's not just a dream, they are doing the thing. The way he talked about the beginnings of SpaceX and their first 3 failed launches, how they scraped together enough funds to try one more time and succeeded, the way he said 'We don't know if we will be successful, but we're going to try.' It's really inspiring, you can tell that for him it really isn't about making money, he wants humanity to go beyond Earth.
>>1011616
Funny what you can do with a lot of money and enough determination.
I'm afraid I'll be too old for a ticket but I think a lot of kids are going to grow up seeing this stuff happening in real time and actually get inspired enough to take part.
One thing I think people often forget is this is the kind of thing that brings people together. It's suddenly really easy to forget about all the bickering and politics in the day to day when you watch videos like the falcon landings. At least for me, it makes me feel human again, like we have a common goal.
>>994182
Why Venus? It's a hell planet.
>>994559

You mean booster rockets or multi stage rockets
>>1011632

The price means that only old people will be able to go. No "kids" have the money to go.
>>1011646
Venus is not a hell in the upper atmosphere where airships are extremely viable.
>>994559
>I have no idea how rockets work
>>1001521
>I'm pretty sure there are some serious regulations and requirements that go into being granted non-profit status.
It's not too hard, since there aren't big tax consequences. Going to charitable, that's hard as it basically requires an IRS audit and there's a whole bunch of rules on governance that need to be followed closely. For other types of non-profit, it's a lot simpler (and not as tax-advantageous).

It didn't deploy it's landing thrusters as intended.
Something like 2 or 3 seconds of thrust when it should've burned for half a minute.
Probably some communication error in the system but idk.
There's an image of the mark it left on Mars. At least a rover will be sent in a few years.
Remember to know how to use your parachute and and thrusters when traveling, /n/!
