I have no clue, there's a bunch around here in the form of a few warbirds and a couple of Stearmans. But I doubt those or the Avenger and Sea Fury are cheap to maintain in general.

That's single engines anyhow, I know the Ju-52s solved their maintenance costs by having a lot of it be volunteer work. I wish I lived closer, apparently you don't need any prior training for them to teach you to work on those engines.

>A&P
That is?
>>
>>991088
A&P is Airframe and Powerplant - Aircraft Mechanic certification

My father actually got his A&P at an Aviation trade school/high school in NY back in the 70's, by the time he graduated he was a certified aircraft mechanic.. he worked on naval vessels on the east coast, but never went into aviation... got married, lost his way I guess

I followed somewhat in his footsteps, started flying at 15, passed my PPL checkride two weeks before I graduated, I'm working on my commercial now

sorry for the life story lol

Anyways, pic related is my favorite warbird, hopefully there will still be airworthy P-47's by the time I can get my shit together

It's a pain to get here IIRC, EASA or at least FOCA demands that you first get another mechanic license (i.e. car) and then move on.

Still working on that PPL here though, with a long commute it's a bit of a pain to get hours in, but I'm sure it'll come along.

Well if anything 47s weren't rare at least, how many are still airworthy though?

If you have the resources available to you, I would look into coming to the U.S. for your PPL. Training is considerably more affordable here (especially on the west coast) than in Europe.

An FAA issued license also allows you to fly in most countries around the globe, I believe...

I'm not trying to be snobby about U.S. aviation or anything, but our skies are truly free compared to most of the world, it's just what I've heard, dunno if it's true or not.

Either way, keep at it bro. No matter where in the world you fly, every penny(euro penny?) is worth it.

I know there are a lot of P-47s still out there, don't know how many, I don't really track that sort of thing lol.. I think it would give me anxiety if I started to see the numbers dwindling.

I'm doing my hours on a Tecnam that's 150.- for the hour, it's already pretty cheap. It's just the lack of time that has me take quite a while.

As for the license, you need to take some hours in Switzerland to get it approved here. That said a lot of people go to Florida to do their PPL in a few weeks.

No clue about the airspace situation, Switzerland is relatively crowded in terms of controlled airspace, but if anything France is free, provided you speak french.

The only really annoying thing here is the lack of seaplanes despite the large amount of water. It's sort of prohibited. Although recently they added some harbour to the AIP so maybe there is hope.

How many hours do you have so far? And how many hours are required for a license there? ... aaand.. what is the breakdown of required hours? (i.e. how much time under the hood/night/x-country/etc.) lol i'm really curious

I think vacationing in Europe in a small private plane would be awesome.. hopping from country to country, trying all the different types of booze and women. Seriously though, I imagine you get some beautiful views flying in France.

As for seaplanes, there's a company that just got approved and is starting to manufacture amphibious aircraft not too far from where I live.. I kinda want to go test fly one.. it looks fun, but it's around $200k

I think around 7-10, I have to update my logbook.

Technically I should know this stuff because I work with regulations, but I don't really. 45 hours total, 10 or so solo, and I think one or two "long" flights plus introduction to the Alps.

No night flying or anything special I think. Mostly because there's only one or two aerodromes that do Night VFR.

Yeah if you have a good travel plane you can probably do some easy city hopping. Looking at the UK and their amateur air races though.

Someone posted a company that's going to sell a more modern interpretation of the Grumman Goose as a kit plane.

>>991168
I saw that, its a really good looking kit.. I couldn't find info on pricing though, I guess you have to contact them for the pricing info.

The performance numbers seem interesting. Two 300hp Lycoming IO & LIO 540, 1000nm range at 120 knots and 22gph.. 600lbs full fuel useful load...

I only have my land rating, so I don't know much about flying boats, but that sounds about right... sounds like the perfect pleasure/adventure plane. The service ceiling is FL180 and single engine ceiling is 2,500 MSL (yikes), but it is a boat I guess, more options for landing off airport.

>No night flying or anything special I think. Mostly because there's only one or two aerodromes that do Night VFR.

That's unfortunate, night flying is so chill, whenever I have the spare cash for an hour or two I usually go up at night.

>Long as fuck nacelles
It always happens with turboprops because they're so much lighter and it always looks goofy as hell.

Given that it's essentially a Goose, it's really just the Sea Duck all over again. Which is all anyone could ever wish for.

Only issue is that these things are probably pretty large, so finding a hangar is going to be expensive unless you live at a lake.

>Night VFR
Might just get the IR after a bit to use that at night anyhow. But we'll see, for now it's the PPL.

Yeah, the long nacelles are kinda weird, but the turboprops give the plane, which already has great utility, even more capabilities.. the operating cost tho.... on the other hand, I would not mind at all getting my hands on one of those Gweduck kits.. that plane looks fun as hell

That's unfortunate, hope things get better again then. It's not good to be grounded.

We had a hangar fire a few weeks ago which burned three Pipers of our flight group along with an old timer Boussard and a replica Fieseler Storch plus some others. But that was sad.

Then someone wrecked the gear on one of the remaining planes, leaving us with a single plane that was overdue for it's big checks. Still got to fly, but not as much as planned for these holidays.

yeah, I really did it to myself.. just been busy putting my money in other places and it couldn't be helped, but the dream to be paid to fly is still alive

Part of it was similar to your situation, the Arrow I was doing my commercial stuff in was totaled.. the owner/mechanic found huge cracks in the main wing brace.. I ended up starting the multi-engine to possibly get my commercial multi, did 3 flights in that then family emergencies happened like 4 in a row and the cash was all gone

I'm sorry to hear about your school's fleet, even if you don't own the planes, seeing one you trained in get wrecked/destroyed feels terrible.
>>
>>991220
The aviation virus is cruel because it costs way too much money to sustain. Been lucky with the money as is. But I don't plan for anything higher than a CPL anymore. Tried one of those assessments for funded trainings at the Airlines and didn't get through, costs way too much money to fund it privately and still leaves you with no hours. So really it's a ticket to Ryanair for slave wages.

That said it is just sad for the Boussard becausethat was an old timer that recently got a bew engine. And it's sad for the Storch because that was an affordable replica (rotax engine and 90% scale) that was allegedly flown very little so one could imagine that with pulling a few strings I could've flown that at least.

Let's see, one is a cold war relic well past her airframe lifetime and the other is brand new.
One is a swept wing military jet with an ejection seat the no-one is rated to fly, the other is a small prop that everyone and their grandmother can abuse.
One is a practical, comfortable utility plane that seats multiple people and the other an uncomfortable G-suit experience for one. And the luggage will have to go under the wings. Just don't accidentaly release it on anyone.

Nope, can't see any reason why a banged up, fifty year old MiG 15 would be cheaper, anon. Sure is a big mystery, anon. Sherlock Holmes stuff, this is. In'nit, anon?

There's something incredibly intimate about being in a noisy, small airplane buzzing around the United States, a big difference in comparison to the many international flights I took throughout my young years. Decided to write a little something about my first time in one of these city hoppers:

-----------------------------------------

"Ladies and gentlemen, the captain has turned on the seatbelt sign. Please return to your seat and fasten your seatbelts."

I shake awake with a snort. My head is spinning, and for a brief second I forget where I am.
With the buzzing remains of the coma-like sleep finally subsiding, I look out the window. It was near midnight, and the sparse lights of Eastern Maryland were passing by below. We were lower than I expected, and I kick myself for not waking up sooner. I rub my face. I check on my little brother next to me, and he's still knocked out. My 17-year old self feels pretty cool, flying without our parents. I figure I'll let him sleep.
As we begin our approach into SBY, I can hear the airplane getting itself ready, almost as if it was waking up itself. It's an incredibly comforting sound. The engines calm down, and we start our final approach. All I can see is darkness below, but I know we're close. Before I know it, I see the christmas lights that make up the runway of the tiny airport. We touch down firmly. The engines go in reverse, and sparks fly off of our wheels.
I rub my face again, and look at my watch. The drive home to Milton will take about an hour. I nudge my little brother awake, and start to pack our things.

Comfy read. Traveled a lot by plane with my little bro when I was a kid, mostly long haul then domestic transfer.

I flew the 200 for air wisconsin, I'm at a new regional now. It sucks so bad. I'd say you're definitely in the minority enjoying regional aircraft.

I've flown the 200 into Reno once, and was pleasantly surprised. Crew seemed happy, and the airplane seems like a fun little thing. Really lives up to its "Barbie Jet" nickname. Window placement was odd though.

I'm working on my PPL right now with intent on working commercial, and a part of me romanticizes the first few years with the regionals. I know the conditions suck, but getting in will definitely give me a euphoric sense that I "made it". Is there any truth to this?
Also, what do you fly now, then?

E175 at a different regional... did I feel like I made it? No, because I knew I was going to make it by the time I was flight instructing, I was just waiting the 2 years of instructing to get my shot at part 121 flying
>>

What do you mean by flight characteristics?

Usually if you want quiet during your flight sit at or before the engines.

Want to feel less turbulence? Sit in between the wings.

Turboprops are louder then jets.

What its like on board depends heavily on the airline, after all that it's more of a crap shoot.

Embraer 170/190 are the most comfiest planes you can fly.best ergonomics for passengers under 6foot 8in

Fokker 100 when you sit as far forward as possible are also incredibly comfy.

my dad's been on the ten fleet at netjets for 15 years, so he's almost certainly flown the airplane pictured. neat.

Im flying short haul currently, should I try to change to biz side? I have a few small kids though.

I already got one biz jet typerating but that didnt pan out at the time.

I've kinda always wanted to work less.

What I think you're getting at is because the engine is connected to the wing not the fuselage.

Stop being such a pleb and believe. It is SOON brother. This pretty much is a regional jet.
>>
>>1001052
As much as I appreciate your shared enthusiasm,

>Capacity:12 passengers
>Range: 4500NM (~3x that of the CRJ1000)
>Thin as fuck cabin

Granted, in a dedicated passenger configuration you could get more seats in there, but this airplane is simply not suited for actual passenger operations. They have the capabilities, but this airplane is not what we're looking for.
>>
>>1001059
>Capacity: 12 passengers
Wut? You might be right, but this looks like it could carry more than that. The other (slightly smaller looking) citations top out at 12 but this looks like a step up from that. If it isn't a regional jet then I would wager it's only a hair off.
>>
>>1001060

Like BBJ looks like it can carry 148 pax. C'mon. Renders are renders.

This was the result of flow testing/simulation at Mississippi State who co-developed and assembled early planes. So it's either MS redneck engineering at it's finest or just dumb ... i can't really tell.
