/bbg/ - Bike Buying General
Old thread >>973979 dead

Post bikes you're looking at, help others find a bike, general bike buying fun.

I'm eyeing this guy (used Charge Mixer 8) how high should I bid on it. Pretty keen on internal hub and disc brakes. It's Medium frame which according to wiggle should fit up to 183cm (I'm 183cm/6ft). For commuting in hilly city.

I'm looking at an Ultegra Tarmac because I wont have enough to buy one for a couple months. I kind of want disks on it, BUT WHAT EVS. It's a god damned shame that I wont be able to put some overpriced Chinese hoops on that fucker for a while.

T-whites second hand bikes are not great, but it is a good shop for repair work. Definitely check out adventure cycles. It's normally open until 7 and closed on Tuesday & Wednesday.

Chromoly just means steel that isn't hiten, can be a lot of different things. Yeah, it's lighter than hiten though. What you really want is a decent road bike. Very rare/ over priced in Auckland. You can get something better/ cheaper on trademe by paying $80 on shipping from somewhere else if you're willing to take the risk. Auckland tax is ridiculous for road bikes. There's fuck all for sale anywhere atm, but it's worth lurking trademe.

The trek didn't sell, you could make an offer. It's nothing special, probably not that light, but it has low gearing range, is rigid and has slicks.

clearly needs a wash, but it really is a nice vintage bike. You were spot on with the saddle, it's a bernd hinault edition. He even threw in a drop bar. If you are interested I'll try to take some better pics.
Riding it is very fun, can't wait to try the drop bar out

dunno if this is the right thread, new to /n/

I need a new bike. I've been using a $200 schwinn I got 7 years ago at target to get back and forth from the train station and it's done that fine. but in the past few months I've been riding more often for exercise purposes. maybe not what you guys do, but 7-8 miles a day. the schwinn has started hurting to ride for so long now and the gears are all fucked up because I didn't do proper maintenance (I've learned my lesson).

anyway, my dad has this old bike - pic related. it's a Royal Regina, which I have found googling is a rebranding of a Superia from roughly 1970. the frame seems fine and it rides, but the wheels and tires need replacing for sure and if possible I'd like to get a more modern gear system too.

so the question is, do I put money into fixing this thing, or should I just go and get an entry-level bike of modern make? and if it's the latter, what's the best bang for your buck bike? like, the thinkpad or honda civic of bikes?
>>
>>979813
If that frame is your size and you can learn to do basic work yourself (esp. repacking the bearings and truing the wheels), then it's worth keeping. Assuming you do the work yourself, for less than $100 you can replace the tires, brake pads, freewheel (modern freewheel will make shifting much easier), and chain, and replace those mediocre plastic derailers with better parts assuming you have a nearby shop/coop with old parts.

But if you're going to have to spend extra to have a shop do all the work for you, I'd just go in and look at whatever your local shop sells in the way of basic hybrids/road bikes depending on what kind of riding you're going to do. $500-1000 will get you a reasonable new bike from a bike shop, generally with some kind of warranty or service included, which is worth paying for if you're just starting out and clueless.
>>
>>979827
thanks for the response, I think I'll look into it. I'll check on it more tomorrow and really see what's been rusted or looks like trash. maybe in a few weeks I'll have something.
>>
>>979813

I have a fair bit of experience modernizing old frames.

By modern gear system I'm assuming you mean STI style shifters(the kind on the brake levers.) First things first, how big is the casette(the number of cogs on the rear wheel) on that bike? If it's a 5 speed, which is what I'm guessing based on the year, it will not accept a larger cassette. 7 speed is the minimum for STI shifting.

If you're interested in knowing WHY, it's because of the gap between your rear wheel(known as the dropouts.) 5 speed road is 120mm, 6 and 7 road is 126mm, 8 to 11 is 130mm. Steel frames are nice and bendy so you can technically just jam in a bigger wheel, but too big a gap and the tab of metal where you bolt on the rear derailleur will angle outboard, causing it to fuck up over and over again.

So, if you have a bike that's 6-7 speed, with a drop out of 126mm, you can jam in a 8-10 speed wheel(130mm), which will cause the dropout to bend outward 2mm on each side. Not too bad, and it'll shift fine. I've personally converted a 5 speed into a 7 speed with microshift STI, but shifting was slightly wonky and I do not recommend it.
>>
>>979881
You can just bend the derailer hanger though?

>>979813
Worth servicing per >>979827

Not worth modernizing. Buy a better used bike on craigslist. The thinkpad or ef/eg civic of bicycles is a 90s race bike or a 90s rigid mtb. Post your local cl and i'll have a look.
>>
>>979893

You can try bending the hanger, but I wouldn't even trust a bike shop to do that safely.
>>
>>979896
If you still have your 7 speed with microshift and shifting is still wonky then align the fucking hanger. Shops have a tool to do it. Hangers get bent all the time anyway, it's a super common/ simple thing to do.
>>
>>979899
>>979896
>>979893
If you're cold setting the hanger you'd be retarded for not cold setting the dropout first. And if you cold set the dropout, the hanger shouldn't be that misaligned.
>>
>>979899

I already stripped that bike down over a year ago and used those shifters to make my buddy a ghetto touring bike from a R I G I D 9 0 S M T B. They only cost me like 50 bucks.
>>
>>979901

No need to coldset a frame at all if it's 126mm to 130mm. I've done it over a dozen times.

https://boise.craigslist.org/bik/5673778225.html
What do you think?
>>
>>980205
Are you looking to train for, or race Tri/TTs? If no, don't buy it for any amount. If yes, it's an alright deal, not a steal, but a fair price.
>>
>>980235
> If no, don't buy it for any amount.
What? That looks at least as comfy as most road bikes. Why couldn't you use it as a general fitness bike?
>>
>>979893
longisland.craigslist.org is the closest, but
newyork.craigslist.org is within easy grasp
>>
>>980244
Of course you can use just about any bike as a general-purpose fitness bike, but some are better than others. That bike, unlike your typical road bike, is designed with a steeper seattube, on the assumption you'll be riding on the aero bars and staying in the aero tuck position practically all of the time, which is not so good if you're going to be riding in a place with stop lights and traffic, or with lots of hills, and converting it to standard drop bars won't be straightforward.
>>
>>980297
And suddenly, though you're right of course, it doesn't sound as terrible >>980235
was making out.
My point is that riding e'rry day as if you're training for Tri/TT is not a bad thing even if you're not actually intending to take part in any competition.
>>
>>980308
It's fucking retarded.
>>980289
How tall/ budget?
>>
>>980205
If you decide to do it, make sure the fit is good. Very good. I heard the single most important aspect of a Tri/TT bike is the fit. If the fit isn't comfy, you can damage your body and, obvious, it won't be pleasurable to ride. Unlike road bikes, the fit on a Tri/TT bike is more important and there is a smaller margin for error of what fits and what doesn't.

Anybody who wants is free to correct me, I have never done any kind of Tri/TT because of money, time, I'm a student, and I obviously don't like the idea of buying a Tri/TT bike that wasn't fit to me. .

Need a new bike. Torn between a Surly Cross Check and an All City Space Horse.
Open to other suggestions as well.

I just need a versatile all rounder to get my ass around the city. Hauling groceries, commuting, 4 hour rides, and just taking it for joy rides. So mounts for all kinds of racks/fenders are something i really want. Wider tire clearance is nice i guess but I doubt i'll ever need anything over 32mm.
Also something bulletproof. Steel frame, can frankenstein all sorts of parts when something breaks.
But also importantly fun. Most of the time the bike is gonna be spent being flung through traffic so I don't want to get something that feels tanky like a touring bike. Something nimble and fun

open to any recs, but it's best if it's specialized/cannondale/trek/surly/all-city/salsa because its what the bike shop i work for carries.

Looks aight if you want to ride -very- slowly on the flat, dutch style.

Otherwise the high, limited gearing, super upright position and foot brake will suck.

"Researching, purchasing, and even riding can be challenging between the routine maintenance, flat tires, rust, broken chains, and uncomfortable seats. But it doesn’t have to be. We reassessed every element of the bicycle from the ground up in order to make riding more simple and more enjoyable."

Well ok... the wheels can still go out of true, the bearings still need grease, the seat won't be comfortable for any distance, the belts don't last for ever, they do need occasional adjustment and the tyres can still puncture.

CAAD12 DISC 105?

In search for my first 'proper' road bike and looking at the CAAD12 with shimano hydraulic discs and complete 105.
Currently on sale here on the german site bike24 for 1400€. Sounds really great, since I might also want to put on a bit wider tires and go on gavel. Is the CAAD12 okay for that?

Still a bit unsure since 1400 are a lot of money since I also need pedals and shoes then.

I got offered 1000€ for my mtb in the pic.
it's mostly xt stuff with slx shifters and a deore crank.

I mostly ride gravel stuff and built this thing initially to go bikepacking.

should I get the money and buy something like the cheapest specialized sequoia or something ?

1000€ is a good deal right ?

I also have a kaffenback with a pretty weird build that I use for comuting.
I could get rid of that too and use the sequoia / awol or whatever instead and put the money on the side for a new mtb exclusive mtb in the future.

...what would you do ?

German companies if you want to spend less. Full shimano groups (no crap chainset & brakes) plus good wheels & tires which are rare on cheaper road bikes. You'd also get your choice of gearing. A quality rim brake system does work incredibly well.

105 and Ultegra feel different enough that the price difference is worth it, Cannondale's spider cranks are great, and Shimano's road disc brakes really need another generation of refinement to get to the feel of their mountain bike stuff. Squeezing on the front brake was basically nothing nothing nothing OH SHIT, and the bike in general didn't feel quite as nicely balanced and agile as the Ultegra rim brake version.

Biggest problem with the CAAD12 Ultegra was that the stock brake pads are fucking trash and need immediate replacement. Dunno why Shimano ships brakes with such shitty pads. The wheels would need to be upgraded but that's typical of any bike. Shimano's hood and lever shape leaves something to be desired for me, and the front shifting is good but not ideal. If I buy it I'll probably convert it to Chorus with Neutrons.

Would an aluminum bike with a carbon fork work for this? I don't want to buy a steel bike made for touring because it'd feel like sacrificing enjoy-ability for touring.
>>
>>981327
is this bait or are you really this retarded
>>
>>981327

Touring bikes are usually made of steel.
Titanium if you go ultra-custom and get a Moots.

Your misguided belief that steel bikes are somehow less fun than bikes made of some other material is as completely fucking retarded as the ignorant belief that road bikes are intrinsically uncomfortable that so haunts Walmart shoppers.

An aluminum touring bike will be no more or less enjoyable than than a carbon or steel touring bike. It will still be designed to carry a hundred pounds of gear being pedaled for many hours and so have a long, stable wheelbase and a relatively upright riding position.

So fuck off and grow some godamn action principle.
>>
>>981329
I'm guessing what he meant was that he doesn't want a bike with touring goemetry and assumed that you cannot buy a steel road bike that does not have touring geometry which of course he is wrong about.
>>
>>981321
>the stock brake pads are fucking trash and need immediate replacement. Dunno why Shimano ships brakes with such shitty pads

That's interesting to hear, and sort of confirms my suspicions (about the brakes on one of my bikes not being fantastic)

Might have to get some KOOLSTOP or w/e sooner rather than later.
>>
>>981360
Koolstops are great. I've found that Shimano's pads have improved significantly over the past decade or so to the point that I've moved to leaving them on when I get a new set of calipers. In the past I would immediately throw away the original pads.

http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1182842_-1_401105__401105

Bikes suited for light touring/ road riding. Maybe a Diverge? These bikes used to be called 'sport touring' and are now called 'adventure road bikes' but at that price most of them are mech discs which really does not appeal to me. For fun rides you're not losing much compared to a pure road bike.

http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1185832_-1_400309__400309

You COULD tour on something like that, but you'd need an expensive bikepacking setup, expensive ultralight gear or a credit card, it wouldn't be very comfortable and the wheels would very likely get fucked.

At that price you could get a jamis aurora or a fuji touring, but yes, they wouldn't be as nice to ride unloaded as a road bike. I'd definitely look at used, because you might be able to get something truly excellent like pic related, rather than a low specced compromise machine. Post your cl.

It's going to recommend crank length also. You don't need to worry about that.

Standard full size wheels for mtb are 26" 27.5" and 29".
For road and city bike it's 28" also known as 700c and sometimes 622 in euroland.

Thanks a bunch! Which of those two would you recommend?
Both seem pretty similar but I have little experience with what wheels are good and if one fork is better or something...

Hmmmm whichever you like the look of more.

The canyon's geometry is more relaxed (more upright riding position). The rose has smooth welds. The canyon isn't all black- safer. The rose's wheels are slightly better. The canyon's tires are slightly better. The canyon is more prestigious - Movistar and Katusha on the world tour ride canyon. You'd probably get the rose sooner.

Very similar bikes. Both would be great.

and i saw that both habe the Mavic Aksium wheels. All I remember about mavic is that durianrider hates their freehubs and always shits on them. WIll the freehubs be an issue?
>>

Yes. I'm not durianrider and can't stand listening to the twat, but if he hates them too it proves even a stopped clock is right twice per day.
They use a shitty plastic/mild cheese sleeve bearing instead of balls, are supposed to be oil lubricated but have no seals to keep the oil in place, and the whole think is stupid beyond belief even by frog-eater "engineering" standards.
Mavics gonna mavic I guess.

Buy a new wheelset for the bike then and use the delivered Mavic one for whatever. What are good, affordable wheels? There is probably a buyers guide online somewhere...
>>
>>981814
>good, affordable wheels
Shimano. They're nearly always a safe bet on wheels and hubs. They're heavy but soundly engineered and don't cost a lot. I bought a pair of WH-RS31 with offset rear rim, 11-spd compatible chromo freehub, cup and cone bearings and flatened spokes for about 160€ new. The WH-RS21 is slightly less and current WH-RS330 slightly more.
WH-RS81-C24-TL for 500€ if you're weight concious or just like carbon.

If you're spending much more than that I'd suggest going for a hand built set instead of system wheels, but for the money it's excellent. Hand built (by me) with 32/32 clyde spoking was my upgrade path but in hindsight it was just a feel-good because-I-can upgrade.
>>
Posted here about a week ago- I'm looking for my first road bike to do group rides with my universities cycling club and possibly race if I get into it enough. Unfortunately some of the recommendations I was given were already sold before I had the chance to look at them. My budget is $1k, and right now on CL this is the bike I am most interested in: https://asheville.craigslist.org/bik/5684593388.html

Now, I know the Roubaix is geared more towards gravel or pavé than strictly road, but would this be alright to use for my purposes? The triple chainring is definitely wierd for a higher end road bike, but again, I am not very knowledgable.

If a decent used bike does not come up before the beginning of next month when I go back to school, I am leaning towards a Focus Cayo AL Tiagra: http://www.focus-bikes.com/us/en/bikes/2016/road/performance-cayo-al/cayo-al-tiagra.html , which my LBS is selling for $999. For a bike with Tiagra groupset, carbon fork, internal cable routing and a tapered headtube this sounds like pretty good value.

How cold is cold? Snow/slush on the ground? Ride a cyclocross or MTB with studded tires if the condition is icy, but for regular old snow knobblies will do.

Bundle up, protect the face hands and feet in particular. When I ride in the winter I look like one of those ay-rab women, plus a pair of untinted riding glasses so every inch of my skin is covered.
>>
>>982097
You wear weather gear to suit with the conditions, and if you live somewhere that gets snow and ice, you can set your bike up to handle just about anything. The specifics depend on where you live, but cycling year-round is possible nearly everywhere with the right equipment. The hardest part is your first season, and the process of learning exactly how to dress/layer so that you don't sweat and don't get badly chilled.

I can choose between this two to build a cheap all-terrain touring bike. 94 rockhopper vs 87 diamondback ascent ex.

Planning to use it in a third world country where roads aren't always nice. Which one would make a better build? and why?

A good option, just put road tires on.
On the small side for you, but a fair price

>>982844
It's a fine bike if you want something to goof around on, and have the cash to throw at a cute little toy that will never be a high performance machine.

>>982851
There's not a whole lot of difference between these two, but if you were planning to switch to drop bars the Diamondback would be somewhat easier to adapt (longer seattube and toptube).

Hey guys. I love vintage mountain bikes, and I found a really interesting frame on CL. It's made out of 7005 aluminum.

You guys think it's worth $25? I realize the rear suspension is primitive as fuck but I can't help but love the shit they tried in the 90's to make full suspension bikes a reality.

Looking for a new bike. Something comfy, as the roads here are shit. Will also be riding on hardpacked dirt roads fairly often, occasional very simple singletrack.

I live in literally the flattest place on earth, so really big and really small gears aren't needed. Just something that'll take big tires and has STI (my first bike with 'em). Narrowed it down to these two, i think. But is there another <$900 AUD option I'm missing?

https://www.reidcycles.com.au/granite.html
https://www.reidcycles.com.au/reid-cx.html

Also, is there much difference between the two? Apparently the granite is more stable, comfortable whilst the CX is better for dodging traffic...? Fucking marketing. For the record, i do dodge a bit of traffic and shit around here.
>>
herp, i am a derp

A coworker is asking me to help them buy their girlfriend a bike and I mostly want to point them in the right direction and wash my hands of it.

I'm compiling some info to send to them, but I want to run it buy you guys.

Height: probably 5'9
Weight: close to 300 iirc, will probably have a bag and some things to carry.
Purpose: commuting ~5 miles, no elevation change more than 3%, decently paved.
Budget on the lower end: Probably between $400-600.

Things I know I'm telling them:
They want an upright commuter sort of geometry.
Be ready to repair/replace more parts, learn to replace your own spokes.
Wheels should be minimum 32 spokes, preferably 36 spokes.

Things I need to know:

Is there any point in considering anything aluminum?
What other components are going to wear out faster?
What sort of pressure should she run her tires at?
Do smaller tires have a better weight capacity than larger ones?
>>
>>983715

For starters the Granite has a carbon fork and Spyre brake calipers. So that's a hell of a lot better spec than the other one.

The geometry of the Granite is also a bit slacker, and has a higher slightly higher bottom bracket and longer wheelbase. I think it is better suited to your needs than the CX, which has geometry that would be best suited to riding in a a pack or peloton.

Currently on a 2007 trek 3700 26in tires, rim brakes, rst front forks.

The guy has 300+ positive feedback on evilBay, among which are several people who bought bikes from him and apparently were quite happy with them. (must be a collector/richfag or something) He said in the description test rides and personal pickup are welcome, it's just too far away from where I live. So yeah, I'm either fucked now or I got a pretty nice deal. It even has Dura Ace dual pivot brakes which were even a generation above the rest of the group. (pic related) If worst comes to worst, I can still sell all the parts and suck it up, but I hope it will be fine. :'(
>>
>>984297
Steel is real, as they say, but aluminum doesn't rust.

A bike is only as fast as it's rider.

Hitting up your local craigslist is never a bad idea, when looking for a bike. If you don't find anything nice there, time to check your lbs's, but this is also why it's a good idea to check in in craigslist regularly even if you don't really need a new bike, just in case someone happens to post a good deal.
Third is to consider buying online.
>>
>>984297
>Realistically, how much would i have to spend on a road bike commuter?
Depends on how nice of a commuter you want. Entry level Claris/Sora road bike can be bought from €400 new every once in a while. A local chain has a regularly recurring "sale" on some Merida for that much.
A nicer bike with Tiagra/105 or Apex/Rival, better kit all around and a few kilos less is more expensive. Twice as much, about.

No, it's pretty normal. It won't say De Rosa or Colnago on the frame, but €800 gets you a lot. Hell, even a 2016 Cannondale CAAD8 is what, €550 at Evans Bikes. €600 for the Sora version.
Lesser brands are obviously less.

I guess. Looking at Evans, Tiagra seems to start at little over 800€. Cheapest 105 i saw was 900€ but that was on clearance with 25% off. I still maintain that that's very cheap for a 105 road bike.

>>
Is it worth the $250?

https://orlando.craigslist.org/bik/5653229018.html
>>
>>984413

Ehhhh. Thumb-lever Sora shifters are generally considered the worst integrated shifters ever devised.

The bicycle is probably worth $250, yes. Whether or not it is worth $250 and putting up with thumb Sora is a more personal question.
>>
>>984414
No, the Tourney ones are
>>
>>984415

Didn't even know that Tourney integrated shifters ever existed. Though I guess I have seen the 2300 ones around a few times. Pretty awful.
>>
>>984352
The Sequoia looks really nice, but I'm a little worried the geometry isn't "road" enough, i.e., the top tube/reach is pretty long for each size, and the head tube angle is smaller. It can be taken for a test ride however, which isn't possible with the Twin Six, though it can be purchased online.

friend is selling a 2012 trek alpha 1.2; how much should i offer him?
>>
>>984628
Nothing. Decent entry level frame. Decent entry level wheels. Nice pedals. Crappy clitshifter Sora group. Unless you're planning to replace the groupset I wouldn't go for it. You'll either end up overspending on a decent bike with a crappy groupset, or underpaying your friend for what is a nice bike with a single flaw.
Don't buy from friends.

If you absolutely must have it, you'll have to judge by yourself how much of an issue the few gears and thumb-operated clit-shifters drag the value down. And find a decent way of explaining to your friend why the value is so much lower than it "should" be without making him feel ripped off.
Keep in mind that a brand spanking new 2016 Claris Trek/Cannondale is €500.

>>
>>984632
No, that's probably about right. The problem is it could have cost him four-five times as much with the accessories only a few years ago and he could probably find some schuck who'd pay a lot more for it on Gumtree. The world is full of retards who only ever look at used bikes and have no idea what a comparable/better bike costs new. They'll pay through the nose and still think they made a killing.
£150 is about €200, isn't it? That's the absolute most I'd pay for it, but again, there's probably no shortage of people who'd pay more and you risk looking like you ripped your friend off. At least to him. Talk it through and ask what he thinks it's worth. If he throws out any number higher than your £150, don't haggle. Wish him luck or even help him sell it, but buy somewhere else.

>>
>>985139
Cool, any guides on suggested brands/etc for a given price range? I want to read up on a lot of stuff in the coming months.

I live in FL so it's retardedly fucking hot for a few months still. I guess some people still bike in it just with shit tons of water but man, no thanks, not for me

>Hybrid bikes are best for beginners i've heard?

Hybrid bikes are good for nobody.
They're bad at everything, including but not limited to both comfort and performance in all conditions.
>>
>>985133
disregard the haters - for casual riding and commuting a hybrid is fine, may well be the only bike you need.
>>
>>985149
Then what's the correct way to start out?
>>
>>985185
Entry level bike for the discipline you're interested in.
>>
>>985187
What price range is entry level?
>>
>>985185

Start out what?
You're talking like cycling only means one thing. It doesn't. It's a vast array of very different activities involving different skillsets and equipment.
>>
>>985189
For what discipline and what level of entry? Say €500-1000. The same price range where the "decent" hybrids are.

I'm about to buy a new bike. Between the Specialized Tarmac Elite and the Cervelo R2, which is the better bike overall? I have no plans to race but I do like pushing myself and going as fast as I can.

Allez DSW SL Expert with ultegra instead of 105, save $400, and buy a power meter.

Has anyone had any experience with wiggle's in house brand Verenti? Looking at a few of their hybrid commuter bikes but as it's online only can't actually go see the bike.
>>
General thoughts on Merida? I know the Yanks don't get them but they seem pretty well put together and you get good components for your money. Is there something in missing? Any reason one would try to kill me?

Specifically looking at the Scultura.

I'm trying to buy my first serious bicycle for exercise and occasional races just for fun, and as a high school student living with my parents, I am planning on saving up enough money to buy myself a good bike that I will be satisfied with for years. I saw this on craigslist and wanted to know if its reliable, fast, and worth the money. Thanks!

https://toronto.craigslist.ca/tor/bik/5696899204.html

the bicycle is in the picture, and is selling for $420.

Yes it is reliable and fast, but you are overpaying for the Bianchi meme. Also

Hey guys, its the poster 2 up back here again, and I found this bike. Now, i'm a relatively new cyclist, but I do know that Shimano 600 is pretty good. And for that price, I know there must be some sort of catch. Could anyone tell what i'm missing here, and if it's a good first bicycle. Thanks!

Do Craigslist bike prices go down in winter ? They are very expensive right now, Schwinn garbage being sold over $200, and old rusty bikes $150.

Total noob here. Worth 200 burgerbucks? Leisure rides a couple of hours a week, though eventually I'd like to git gud enough to commute.

Pls rate my potential entry into a proper road bike:

oh shit bro you from mississauga too??

A Cannondale H-400 just popped up for sale in my area. Does anyone have experience with these bikes? As far as I can tell from the pictures all the components seem original and I think it's from 1996. I know Cannondale was doing cool things with aluminum back in the day but I was just a wee lad then. I plan to ride it for commuting and doing things around town.

Also, while I'm looking at older relatively cheap bikes, what are some signs that it's stolen rather than someone just trying to get rid of a bike that's been sitting in the back of their garage? Some bikes I've seen have almost suspiciously low price tags.

Pls.

Etobicoke brah.
>>
Aside from Fuji and Cannondale, which are some other brands we should be looking for ?
>>
>>987047

New?
Big four = Specialized, Cannondale, Trek, Giant
Good value brands = Giant, Jamis, Felt, Kona, Masi, Fuji

For older used bikes...

Miyata, Centurion, Panasonic, Bridgestone, Univega(some now dead department store's house brand for Miyata-built bikes), Nishiki, Lotus, Shogun

I would probably kill for a 3Rensho, or a Bontrager Race Lite.
>>
>>986591

A bit pricey, but otherwise a solid road bike that won't be lacking in performance at all.

Upgrade the tires first.

Is dura ace worth the extra cost? Should I just get the ultegra groupset?
>>
>>987237
depends on your skill level. Modern Ultegra is most anyone will ever need, even then modern 105 groupsets are pretty good.

If you're willing to spend the money on dura ace, just get ultegra and a good power meter. You'll benefit much more
>>
Is there a decent road bike new under $400? For commuting ~14km/day
My local craigslist is shit.
