Uh, hello, I know nothing about trains but I hate having to travel by air. Are there any lines that go from west coast to east coast that are pleasant to travel and cost about the same as a plane ticket? You folks seem like you would know this answer.
>>856385
>are there lines that go coast to coast
yes. may have to transfer in chicago tho.
>costs the same as a plane ticket?
depends. if you get a room, it's kinda like a first class ticket in price (you have a bed though). just looked at a reserved seat from seattle to new york, and it was about $250 and left Sunday evening and arrived Wednesday evening.
>comfort
Seats recline and you definitely have more room than on a plane. Long distance trains usually have an observation car, which is a chill comfy lounge. Seats are first come, and you can watch the country roll by with a glass of wine. People are social, so if you don't want to be, bring headphones.
You can bring your own food. Snack bars have options if you're in a pinch. The dining car takes dinner reservations.
All and all, i fucking love it. Can't stand flying coach, and can't afford any better. Would rather take a train just about anywhere.
>tfw just moved to a house close enough to a railyard that the train whistle sounds LOUD when you're outside and you always hear it inside

>tfw there's a big dropoff behind my backyard and I have a pretty good view looking down at the yard from behind some trees
I'm far enough away so that it doesn't wake me up at night or anything but I can ever so slightly feel the rumble in my bed and faintly hear every whistle at just the right volume.

Why don't you have "bunk-bed" sleepers in america? Here in Europe we still have a few lines, there's usually six beds in each compartment, and some trains have first-class cars that have only four and somewhat larger beds. They're not real beds, and not as comfortable as a real mattress, but they're flat so they make for better sleeping that reclining seats. It would seem like a logical in-between option instead of reclining seats and private rooms. These trains are dirt cheap, too, the reclining seats (which also exist) are barely cheaper.
Either way, sleeper trains are full of win.
A ride so good you'll think it's the last of your life.
>>858756
More and more sleeper trains are being ended, even the most famous ones for example France to Spain ended last year. People prefer flying.
>>858756
We do have bunk bed sleepers in the US. However, they're only available for long distance (20+ hour) routes and Amtrak only has two styles, bedrooms that come with their own separated toilet or roomettes which come with a cleverly hidden toilet right in the room.
We don't have euro styled shared rooms because nobody would buy them, because Americans don't like sleeping with strangers beyond a coach seat.
http://www.amtrak.com/onboard-the-train-sleeping-accommodations
Sleeper trains aren't that popular because the rooms and roomettes cost about as much as a first class airplane ticket while coach seats are only about $20-80 depending on the route.
>>858785
I'd say they'd end in the US too, but Amtrak is pretty clear that they're committing to sleepers with the new modular Viewliner stock. I just wish that the rocky mountain states would get more money to rebuild and expand all the rail lines that pass through them to reduce bottlenecks.

The overnight trains from Spain to France, Switzerland and Italy were taken out of service coinciding with the opening of the HSR connection to France. However, in France there's no continuous HSR line until the Spanish border, so travel times for HSR between Spain and France are pure shit (over 6 hours Barcelona-Paris), and consequently demand is low (2 daily trains between Barcelona and Paris at present). The night trains were retired in an attempt to leave HSR as the only option, and thus increase demand somehow.
Nowadays there's still daily night trains in France from Paris all the way to the Spanish border, so you can still take a regional train to the border and a night train from there. The HSR link to France was a Spanish enterprise, and the spanish statal railway company Renfe was responsible for the international night trains, together with the french SNCF. The present night trains that run to the border are purely french run, so they weren't retired.
Adding to that, the international overnight trains weren't purely "bunk-bed" sleepers, they only had a few coaches for that, and others with roomettes with and without bathroom. Only the bunk beds were pretty cheap, and they'd often be full, while it's the roomettes that were completely underused.
tl;dr, cheap overnight trains are still in demand, they're just being retired to favor HSR
>>858949
I've been on the high speed rail, and fell asleep most of the way. Was incredibly uncomfortable too. A sleeper service even if longer would be much more suitable.

>let's talk about freight trains that all look the same
>>886357
Literally all britfag trains look the same with blue and yellow shitty paint schemes and the same cab design across models. There are hundreds of diesel locomotive model variants in North America. Japanese, South American, even African trains are more interesting than britfag trains and European trains in general. Not all trains are created equal.
Also there's plenty of variety in US passenger and interurban electric trains that you don't see in Europe.
>>886359
Mate american freight trains look like the one or the left or the second one, there's fucking no variation at all.

They're called switchers, anon. But I actually agree with you, to a certain extent. I think American locomotives haven't looked good since the 1970s and modern freight trains are pretty boring. But 1970s and earlier freight trains are pretty neat and had a lot of variety.

>>889295
>>889299
Some more info after some brief googling:
"The six former SP&S Passenger F's in series 9750-9760 had been withdrawn from revenue service in July 1972 and converted to rotary snowplow power plants 972550-L thru 972555-L. A power shortage beginning in early 1974 brought these units back to regular service. In April all six were sent to Dale Street shop for reinstallation of traction motors and renumbered back to 9750-9760. So hurriedly was the work done that the units retained their rust red MOW paint. Three of the group, (F3) 9750, (F7) 9758, and (F7) 9760 received BN logos and large numbers (like other F's) when they were returned to service."
All six of these units were assigned to Minneapolis Junction and worked the "Eastern F-unit Triangle" from Minneapolis and Superior west to Minot, ND for the remainder of 1974 and 1975. As part of the F-unit rebuilding program in 1976, all of these units were upgraded and returned to BN green. They continued in Twin Cities Region service until retirement in 1981.
F3 9750 became 710:2
F5 9752 became 712:2
F7 9754 became 714:2
F7 9756 became 716:2
F7 9758 became 718:2
F7 9760 became 722:2
Apparently the paint color is "mineral red."

>>923728
Cool
>>923836
DID YOU KNOW that, at least in Amurricka, many streetcars and diesel locomotives share the same 600v traction motors and control systems. One just has an onboard power plant. So in a sense all freight railroad ops, as well as streetcars, are technically "electric traction".
>>924026
That's a unique shot.
>>923836
I heard these trains were built using the fresh remains of PCC streetcars
>>924577
When the CTA was formed, they inherited an order for PCC cars that they didn't really want but couldn't cancel. They also needed to modernize the "L" (which was still utilizing a large fleet of wooden cars at the time).
St. Louis Car Company had designed prototype rapid transit cars using the PCC technology (New York's "Bluebirds" and Chicago's 5000 Series) so the CTA scrapped their fleet within a few years of their arrival, and sent the parts back to be rebuilt into the 6000 Series.

Wow those pictures looked super suburban when they're right inside Halifax.
>>941673
That part of Halifax is rather suburban.

I myself like the way that they run on tracks, and how you wait for them to come around.

Videos about massive undertaking of Electrification, double tracking project that span from as far as southern Thailand (to the north) up to Johore Bahru (which is a turd's throw away from Singapore)

/n/ is the only place where I see a cute yuri-anime meme as a reaction to a picture of a newly general inspected E 94.
Btw the 194 178 you see today is the actual 194 580, but was renamed since 194 178 was the only E 94 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn that wore the oceanblue/beige livery, was set aside from service by 27.09.1987, finally phased out in 18.12.1987 and scrapped in 1988 in Munich.

Yep. Those 2400s have been sitting there for a few days after IRM's 1970s fantrip before heading back to Skokie Shops.

That looks like room for three people would be sacrificed for one douchebag. I don't want to sit next to a dirty tire. Blocks the window view. The view from outside would look like shit with those contraptions sticking out.

Then how does it switch to the other track during the return trip?
>>930691
friend cube or what ever the fuck that meme was in Portal
>>972374
How heavy those hundreds of tons really are?
I count maybe 16 axles on the main assembly, plus minus two.
Assuming 25 tons per axles, that would be around 400 tons.
Further assuming a round number of 2 HP / ton, that rocket would need 800 HP to move. That ballpark would be roughtly one medium-heavy locomotive. Indeed, a soviet made TGM4 diesel hydraulic for example can produce 750 HP, but hey - it's a damn rocket, maybe we can afford a spare.
>>973373
Someone made a meme out of that? lol
I'm interested to see what they came up with.
>>973370
It doesn't, how do you make the cable change side? Each car always uses the same track, just as each car always uses the cable on the same side. Seen from the foot of the hill: One car has the cable on the left, double flange on the left and always uses the track on the left. The other just the same only on the right.

>We don't have euro styled shared rooms because nobody would buy them, because Americans don't like sleeping with strangers beyond a coach seat.
what this guy said >>940973
If they're so afraid of strangers, why are they willing to sleep next to them in coach seats?
I think many people who travel by greyhound or take overnight trains in coach seats (assuming they're cheaper than flying) would surely consider bunk beds in shared rooms as an intermediate option, more comfortable than bus or coach seat, yet cheaper than flying.
also
>recently travelled on frenchie sleeper train again
>train was like 10 or 12 cars long, splits in two close to the end of the line
>full to the fucking brim
>could only get one trip in sleeper, had to do the other one during the day because sleeper was sold out
good thing the line I usually use will keep running as a "territorial balance train" since it runs into a poorly served region
>>974178
Ahh. So there are just two cars going back and forth. Okay. I guess that's enough for the system that is more a lift than a public transportation route.
>>974495
More than a lift I'd say it's a type of shuttle. The one posted there is indeed pretty short, but they can be much longer, in my city we have three funiculars, of 736m, 758m and 1130m in length, that's about the distance between two subway stations here.
One of them, the shortest one, even has an intermediate station right above the crossing, which makes the other car have to stop as well. Pretty neat altogether.
