you have no idea how much that makes my skin crawl thanks to an unrelated bed bug infestation I went through years ago
>>
>>1080980
desu i haven't seen a tick yet this year but i DID get a rather thumbnail sized spider munching on my foot while riding the singletrack at the local city forest. fucker got himself wedged between the tongue of my shoe and top of my foot and got squeezed a bit while i was hammering a climb. not really venomous, but it was about as painful as a hornet.

>>
>>1080971
I not on this bike, but on one of my others I did. Just use chemical stripper and go in sections. Use a plastic scraper and a brush to get the remainder off, then flush with LOTS of water. Polish or not, up to you.
>>
>>1080966

>>1080977
I was riding my mountain bike and got OTBed by a massive hidden hole. When I pulled myself out of the hole my leg had two ticks ticks, two huge bruises, and my front shifter was partially broke. Still haven't replaced it with the replacement shifter I bought, since it still mostly works.

>>1080984
I get spiders in my mouth on the trails sometimes. Not huge ones, so I just swallow them. I get tons of bugs in my mouth even riding on pavement, though.
>>
>>1080956
Neato. It's a Mondeo here in Europe (fourth gen), don't think I've ever seen one despite it being like 3 years old.

Zees are still pretty expensive here and I can do without the 4 pots as me and the bike are pretty light. Can get XT M8000 for a little cheaper which is tempting and it uses the same pads as my current ones (have some brand new spares).

>>1080966
It's not that high, barely above the axles and you have to take into account 20-30% sag front AND rear. Also it's 180mm/7" of travel at both ends so if you have the bottom bracket too low you're gonna fuck up chainrings at full compression.

What pedals are those? Im looking for big platform pedals like that, (but silver)
>>
>>1081025
As >>1081024 said, it sags to about 13" when I'm on it. It's a bike for big hits, so it needs the 7" of travel.

As for the ford, it's been a pretty good car. It's quick, comfy, and it's pretty good on gas, like 30mpg average. It's got a bit too much fancy electronic shit for my tastes, but for the price I paid I can't complain.
41k miles and not one issue. It's great in the snow, too.

>>1081036
It's so ratty and tattered, I love it.
>>
>>1081043
>It's so ratty and tattered
Yet smooth, tight and nimble. I've made it a point to keep the drivetrain, brakes, wheels and pretty much every moving part in tip-top shape. I have a blast riding it.

>>
>>1081108
Why? Is the frame too small? I can't imagine that helps much with pedalling efficiency especially with flats.

>>1081107
Nice. Perhaps consider a white saddle to along with the tape. But why's the paint so fucked up on the upper middle tube?
>>

Not too small in height, but I kinda have a long-ish upper body and prefer to push my ass out like a cheap whore when cruising casually, which is why I have a setback seatpost and longer stem. I'm always looking for a silver one from time to time.

>>1081114
No need to. Small imperfections give it charme. Just as long as there's no rust. I'd just glaze it with some transparent lacquer or something to seal the spot. By the way how did you get the dent out yourself?

My latest creation, a Trek Multitrack 700 frame, built up as a touring bike. Gearing is 24/36/48 on an 11-34t 9-speed cassette.

It's actually a stout as fuck frame, being straight-walled chromo. It's stiff when unloaded but with 60+ pounds of stuff on it, the ride is pretty damn silky. It needs different tires, but other than that, it's good.

Not bad for an investment of about $70; that being cassette, chain, bartape, brakes, and cables. Everything else was scrap from the shop I work at.

The groupset is Shimano 105 Arrow. It works well on flats, shifting is suprisingly smooth for a 30 years old derailleur, but even though I can squat about 120 kg, any hill around 10% gradient is murder, I'm almost ripping the handlebars apart to put enought power through.

I will probably change the groupset to modern Tiagra or 105 sometime soon, I like the retro feel, but I also like riding hills without feeling like killing myself.

Ignore that it's a non drivetrain side

Hah, yeah, there's a fair bit of overlap. The blue one on the far left is my primary winter commuter, usually set up with knobbies. The Nature Boy is more a SS long day ride with plush tires, metal fenders and nice dynamo lighting for around the clock cruising, and the stickerbomb bike is my fixed commuter, recently outfitted with dynamo lighting as well. Pic related.

Yep, 8 speed 11-30. Rides like a cadillac lol. Didn't go rear brakeless on purpose. Was reinstalling the brakes and the pivot snapped in half. It's the non-replacable type too. Gonna see if I can get an extra long mounting bolt to hold it together.

What kinda Y do you have?

I don't get the problems people bring up about this bike. Pedal bob? I get almost none but that could be because I'm not some fat fuck boomer on mtbr.
>>
>>1081970
It's probably the worst suspension design ever thought up, not only is it prone to pedal bob (if you don't get any then chances are that spring is way too stiff and/or the compression damping is too high, probably intentional by Trek) but it behaves differently depending on if you're standing or seated.

>What kinda Y do you have?
It's an early 2000s downhill frame. Like a Big Hit but single pivot.
>>
>>1081977
Idk man the rear suspension feels perfect to me. Takes the bumps real good and the suspension moves a mm or 2 at the most when pedaling hard. Either way its fun as hell to ride and thats the best reason I could think of to keep it lol
>>
>>1081978
>Idk man the rear suspension feels perfect to me. Takes the bumps real good and the suspension moves a mm or 2 at the most when pedaling hard.
Is this your only experience with a suspension frame? Like I said the spring is probably really stiff and the compression damping high, even a decent suspension frame with a decent shock is going to move more than that under hard pedalling.
>>
>>1081998
2mm may be a fair bit of his total travel. IIRC, many of the lower-end Y frames were like "80mm" travel that was really only like ~55-60 because of shock design.
>>
>>1081999
Even with such a minuscule amount of travel it should be bobbing more than a couple mm, URT is known for bad pedal bob and there's nothing magical about that frame that could prevent it.
>>
>>1081938
I didn't cringe until I saw it was a single speed, anyway it looks nice for being sticker covered
>>
>>1082000
All true, I'm in agreement with you.

By dad bought a similar bike, Jamis Allegro 2.0

He was an MTB guy trying to get into road stuff. But he hated it, said it was too twitchy. He gave it to me and I thought they same. Fat tires might help, but imho flat bar 700c bikes just generally suck. But Trek FX is a different bike. Maybe it's not twitchy. They're easier than drop bars for a new rider. $250 is fair. New Trek FX on the low end is around $450

Get some hydraulic brakes. Check your saddle height, your leg should be nearly straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

Gorgeous, just needs a dropper. Sort out your brake hoses, if you loosen the banjo bolt at the caliper (only slightly) you can rotate it so the hose runs closer to the fork and chainstay.

XT Dyna-Sys.

That's the point of this cassette. I have ridden it for 2 years now, since replacing the 9 speed system, and really like it.

I ride rather than transport it to trails (ride last weekend was 85 km), hence the triple and ratios... lots of road, lots of long hills. I want smooth shifts.

I will be building another bike more suited to long rides though, so will change this drivetrain and start transporting this bike to some of the rougher trails.

Got this for only $50 at a garage sale. My dad got a Pista as well for only $30. The previous owners are moving to Arizona and have no room for bikes. It feels small compared to my old '87 Schwinn that was a fairly big bike. Still, it's nice having a bike with a carbon fork and brifters. It's not, it's only 50mm travel. I tried to find the axle to crown measurement on it but no luck, however that rigid fork is 420mm and 50-80mm forks tend to be around 450mm.

Yeah I swapped out the cheap heavy suspension for for this one, so far the handling is fine but you may be right about it being shorter. Didn't know it could ruin handling.
>>1082374
Yeah I haven't dialed in saddle height yet, I don't know how to do that yet so thanks for the tip. Also the frame has cable guides that make it difficult to have hydraulic breaks so I opted for some Hayes cx disc breaks, they're fairly decent I think. I did consider hydraulic brakes though.
>>
>>1082512
>Also the frame has cable guides that make it difficult to have hydraulic breaks
Didn't notice that, that's a strange one. If you did want to do it you could just cable tie the hose along the top tube or use adhesive mounts. Also you have a mount on the fork that you could use for the front cable just underneath where it says Promend, you can put cable ties through that like you have on the chainstay (or if those are clips you should replace them as they have a habit of popping off).

Yeah read up on fork trail. Bike geometry is important and complicated.

If you like it though, it might be no big deal. I have a bike with 95mm of trail, outside of what most ppl would consider decent, and I ride it everywhere.

Another thing to consider it's you've lowered you bottom bracket with the short fork. Since it is mtb-to-road conversion you might be fine. But if you take a sharp turn your pedals could strike the ground. Usually just frightening but it could cause a crash at the wrong time

I like the Tron vibe I'm getting from the colors and the tire sidewalls

That's probably one of the sweetest mountain bikes I've seen on here, nice job. Perhaps it would've been better with a different frame, something more unique (Klein Palomino or Adept for example) those parts just make it rad. Impressive weight too.

What brakes and fork? Have you got plenty of spare chainrings? I was close to buying those cranks a few times but as I run 1x I'd have to butcher them and don't know if I could bring myself to do it, that and it's so hard to get rings especially a narrow wide.
>>
>>1082498
I took it for a few rides and it feels ok now. The old Schwinn was a large bike and the seat post was only raised about 1 inch. The stem was all the way down. The previous rider of this bike was a woman, but I raised the seat enough and the leopard print saddle with a butterfly embroidered on it is actually pretty comfy compared to my 80s nut presser. There is a somewhat longer reach, but the stem is up at least a little bit. It feels nice now though.
>>
>>1082581
Thanks! They are the XTR hydros, and the levers are the brifter ones with Ti pivots.
I have 2 spare sets of rings. Those were a bitch to get.

Fork is a Manitou Skareb Platinum SPV 80mm; chasing down the rebuild kit for that was a cunt and a half.

The reason I used this intense is because it is the same kind of frame I raced on back in the day, and (unlike the Kleins) they are a phenomenal suspension design (VPP from Santa Cruz) that I can still get bearings and hardware for.

Another turnoff was the fact that most ultra-light frames from that era were v-brake only, and I really wanted to use the disc XTR grouppo.
>>
>>1082585
Dual control levers? M965 or M975? Looks like the former but the latter look cooler. How are they to use, better or worse than triggers? I've always been curious about them but figured they'd be awkward to use for off road riding.

Fair point on the frame, I was thinking more about coolness and less about performance.

On the topic of old Shimano stuff do you happen to know what year the XT M755 4 pot was? I have one that's still going strong and swear it was from around 03/04 if not earlier. A while back I found a site with the complete component timeline (well, it went back a few decades at least) but can't find it again.

These are the M965s. They are... useable... off road. Being paired with a Bottom-normal rear derailleur makes it even more interesting.
I like triggers more, because there are kind of easy to accidentally shift. That said, these are incredibly smooth shifting and the action is quick.

I believe the M755 4-pots were a bit more recent, like 2006/7 I believe.

I ride drops 90% of the time so they are easier to reach. Those brakes are nothing like modern brakeshifters comfort-wise, plus it's basicly impossible to put enough power through the lever when riding on hoods, so I just disregard this function of theirs completely.

Eh, they require minimal maintenance, and they're nice to just get on and ride without a single thought about what gear I'm in or if I need to switch to an easier gear. It's very much a personal preference; geared bikes make far more sense most of the time. I also live in a somewhat hilly little town, but nothing gross like San Fran or Seattle or shit like that. If I did, I'd most certainly ride a bike with gears.

Also, riding fixed gear in itself is plenty of fun. Cruising around town and never needing to use a brake is a feeling you don't get on a non-fixed bike.

You talking about the gearing? It's not that bad, I count 30t up front and it's SRAM so will have 10t in the rear and it's a 29er. More than low enough for flat ground and it's even enough to give a little boost when going downhill.
>>
>>1083247
how many thousands of miles have you put on that thing, anyhow, Bacon?
>>
>>1083459

It's a 30 x 10-42. 30x10 at 80 rpm with those tires is just over 20mph. My average XC race speed is like 11mph so I think this should do quite well.

If not, I could always fit a double on it eventually I guess.
>>
>>1083473
Or a bigger ring. 30x42 is almost unusably low. Low gear on my fatbike is 22x30 (basically the same as 30x42, and I only ever use it while breaking trail uphill in powder.
You could go to a 34 or even 36 ring and not lose any climbing ability, especially if you use an oval ring.
>>
>>1083639
Even if that is true why bother with anything bigger than a 30 or 32? I'd rather have the extra gearing on the low side than the high for mtn biking. There arn't many mtn bike trails where you are cruising along at 30mph while pedaling for extended amounts of time. Plenty where you are going up step ass hills though where that 30x42 would be nice.

My pink fatty. This bike has gotten a lot of use lately because my $20 SPD shoes are finally falling apart (after like 6 years lol) so I haven't ridden my normal commuter, and pinky has flat pedals.

On the road, it's surprisingly fast and well-mannered, not to mention quite comfortable and plush. It's a bitch in the city, as it is slow to accelerate because of the heavy wheels+tires, but my commute is only 3 miles through the city, then 10 miles of open country-ish main roads, no stops for 7.5 miles! Once you're past 10-12mph, it's not much different than a hybrid with 35mm tires, except it has a bit of self steer that's easy to compensate for. Coming home, there is a nice 1-mile downhill that I regularly hit 30+mph on. On a road bike I have hit 45mph on it, but the gearing of the fatbike and its fairly upright posture means it maxes at 35mph. That's fine though, because 35mph combined with that little bit of self steer is pretty sphincter-puckering.

Pic related is fatpink leaning on a 1964 REO Gold Comet. This is on an unfinished extension of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail, which I use as a slightly longer, more scenic (and this bit at least) unpaved alternate route to work.

first road bike I bought, I know there's better but it suits me for now. Tried it and I'm pretty happy with it. What's the chance of getting flats if I'm riding it on dirt though?
>>
>>1084273
You need to adjust the handlebars. The hoods and bottom of the drops should be parallel to the ground, or 1-2° angled up. Yours are way to far down.

Pump the tires up and ride 'light'; unweight the bike by standing up over bumps. If it's hard-packed dirt you should be fine, just be careful when cornering. If it's loose dirt, you may have a hard time.
>>
>>1084254
Maybe this is a stupid or obvious question, but what exactly is self-steer and what does it feel like?
>>
>>1084282
I've fixed the handlebars since I took the pic, should've mentioned that I guess.

Pic related was what I meant, I tried it today and it wasn't bad, I was just worried about the tires.

Is that parklands of floyd's fork?
>>
>>1084284
Basically, when you lean the bike (or ride off-camber) it tends to 'pull' toward the side you are leaning because there is a lot of rubber on the ground which causes drag. Some tires are more prone to it than others, and typically adding 2-3 PSI gets rid of it.
It feels a bit like the bike has power steering that is way to strong; intend to turn a little and turn a lot. It only really matters on pavement because on dirt, the ground deforms a bit and you don't feel it as much.

>>1084289

Road tires don't mind gravel, you won't get flats unless you're running the pressure so low that you risk pinch flatting. On the other hand though, keep in mind that narrow tires sink into patches of loose gravel/sand/mud, so if you're going to spend much time off pavement you should seek out the widest tires that will fit in your frame.

Why do Burgers get such poor mileage? I know this isn't /o/, but that exact model in the UK (rebranded as the Mondeo) would get at least 10 more mpg. 30/36mpg for a medium-sized car would be very poor by our standards, but you make it sound like it's good. What gives? Do they put better engines in EU models or what?

It's an old shitty 70-80s Bianchi road frame, definitely lower tier as it didn't have downtube shifter bosses. Presumably built for 28s but currently running 700c.

Yeah... you got it. They measure more like a 2.8, but they're pretty tall tires. 50mm rabbit hole rims. Pretty durable yet VERY heavy setup.

The tires are around 1800 g each, and rims around 750 g.

It's worth it for the gnarly rocky alpine terrain, where I don't even have to bring a spare tube as these fucking tires seem to be impenetrable.
