Just shooting in the dark here; did something similar happen to Pan Am (other than deregulation)? That airline's fall from grace was rather swift, and I've heard they really let themselves go during the '80s.

Whether or not you think global warming is real, surely our overall air quality would be slightly better if one major American railroad had kept its electric sections, or better yet, electrified the whole thing.
As for the source of the electric power, hey, the Northwest is hydroelectric central.
