You can brake just fine with no brake pads, metal on metal generates friction just fine, the problem is that metal on metal also generates a lot of heat and wears the braking surfaces out extremely quickly.

Well my rotor hasn't desintegrated yet so I guess I it didn't get worn out that quickly

Of course it won't break in a day or two. But you need an uniform surface to brake properly (and last longer), meaning you'll need to sand your rims, weakening them.
