It's okay, OP, I fly choppers and mountaineer, and I'm terrified of heights. It's better if you're afraid of heights in both cases, honestly, as it keeps you from doing something stupid

That's just semantics, just like how a fear of heights is actually a fear of falling. A fear of heights is irrational when a fall from such low height poses no harm but is still feared. There aren't many cases of flying where a crash could be considered harmless so a fear of flying in general could be considered rational.
