Anyone from Yekaterinburg?
Why is photography in the metro prohibited? I saw the signs in all stations, but I always managed to take some photos of the trains - every time I spoke with the local policemen before, and they always permitted it.
Mysterious russian soul.

Are subways in Russia/former Soviet Union treated as military facilities?

Everything in Russia is treated that way. Russians live in a constant mental state of war since 1917.

The Moscow metro was built as a huge blast shelter

In Uzbekistan, yes. Possibly in Azerbaijan too. But not generally in Russia now - not to the degree of banning photography, at least.

Yes, but in Moscow, taking photos isn't prohibited at all, and they also inform the passengers about this. They even set selfie points in the middle of the platforms (maybe because otherwise idiots could die just because a random selfie at the edge of those platforms).
