Let's have a sailing boat thread!

Sailors, cruisers, liveaboards, racers, whatever! Anyone who likes to do shit on water propelled by wind!

It's the environmental thing to do!

I'll start with some Wharrams cause they're sexy!

I teach matchracing for beginners in DS37 (pic) and Match28.

Both are incredibly fun boats. The 28, however, has a tendency to capsize when the mix of high winds and current-waves are just right.

I sail the Club 420 (North American version).
They're heavy ass things (400 pounds), but I love 'em

Wharrams are lovely, yes, but... in the words of an old friend who spent ten years building one, after 3 years sailing it...

"has the handling characteristics of an island".

Mostly happens in competition. But i guess i means you were really pushing it

Would one be able to live on a sailboat that doesnt have an engine and no money to buy food and pay for anchor fees?
>>
>>1024002
Old-time fishermen do this but there were no anchor fees nor fishing regulations nor overfishing

Get good at fishing and learn to love crossing oceans. Nothing to spend money on out at sea!
Engines are useful of course, but people sailed for a few thousand years without them. I don't know what to do about food other than fish though... Buy cheap stuff the locals do, like potatoes or yuca or whatever in South America or Africa or something? Farther from """civilization""" you go probably free-er you are and easier, cheaper to live on nothing.

Pic: Benford Badger is started to grow on me. So ugly, yet so practical.

Why are French boats always more fun colored than boring American dark navy/dark burgundy or white?

Is that a jig/formwork to build the shape onto? What material are you using for the hull? Please keep posting on here as you progress.

Damn, nice job! I like the looks of your boat so far.

Thinking about bidding on this shitty run down warehouse in tax lien so I have a boat building space lol.

I don't like competitions but I would like to get myself a race boat.
Considering a Laser Radial.
I'm about 30yo and 175cm and 65ish kg.
I did optimists for a couple of years in my youth.

Should I pick something else?

I do a little casual DS37 matchracing now and then (im the matchracing instructor from a few posts up).

I started out in the Optimist. When I got too big for that, i changed to racing in keel boats, as that was the only way of keeping sailing without having rich parents.
I eventually became part of a good Yngling-crew (pic), with him i won a lot of danish youth titles and eventually qualified for the european championships.

I kinda miss fleet racing.

Anyone here love watching big yachts? You might ask why I enjoy watching yachts that I'll never own or even sail on. I would ask in return why you enjoy watching football when you'll never own a football team or even play on one.

>>
>>1024364
Of course. Some of the massive yachts are absolutely beautiful, and watching them sail can be exciting too.

Sure I'll never own one or sail on one, but nonetheless seeing something beautiful propelled solely by the forces of nature is cool as fuck.

Uncertified anything here.

Now I don't know jack. So Of course I'll give my opinion. At least I can blame Messrs. Dunning and Kruger.

AFAIK, the biggest "problem" in daily use of these beautiful machines is the maintenance (periodically thorough) and fuel/lubricants. I suppose you could self-finance one if you had the investment capital to buy and finance one for a year, and the capital/connections to start a small transport business in some island state or something.

I would live to see this happen. Vanbro (ffcossag@yt) has already made some progress in logging his journey, and I'd eat it straight up to get actual travelogues from an "I live in my fucking seaplane bitches" anon.

Godspeed.

She sure is good buddy.
Old pic from before the sides went on.
Plywood superstructure with fir framing. 300gsm biaxial fiberglass. Painted with Jotun 2k topcoat (don't ever use a roller for this, it was fucking awful trying to get a decent finish!) and coppercoat bottom, don't like the idea of antifouling leeching out into the harbour or ocean or the prospect of having to re paint it.
>>
Shouldn't racing go in /asp/?
Anyone here done any long-distance sailing, though? What are your waterways like?

FJ's are the main boats we race (I'm in college in the US). As a crew, I miss the cleats the 420's have for the jib sheets, and death rolling downwind is never fun.

>>
>>1030952
bumpin for sailing questions. Hopefully a very soon to be sailor here, is death rolling a problem on most boats or just the ones made for speed?
>>
>>1035657
usually only in dinghy's is this a problem because they are able to sail extreme downwind angles compared to keel boats.. It happens when you are sailing too far by the lee and not pressing the boat flat enough. It is easy to avoid if you sheet in or drive the boat up... Just got to learn the feeling and react before it happens to you...

Keel boats can do it too but they wont roll. Just chinese gybe and fuck ur shit up.
>>
>>1035676
I'll keep that in mind then

Another question for anybody, would it be difficult to sail a small (15ft) boat with main and jib single-handed?
>>
>>1035848
nah its fine just cleat your jib in the right position and adjust when necessary

are you sailing a 420 or laser 2 or something like that?

Alrighty, the gist of it that I got from the books I've read is to trim the jib first, then the main, so that makes sense

Nothing yet, but what I'll be getting soon is an older boat, gulf coast 15. It's from a family friend, in good condition, and cheap, so I figure it's a decent start.

Here's the best pic I could find of a similar one
>>
>>1035871
The way I learned to sail was by capsizing a lot, the books only teach you theory, come spring or if you're down south get as much time on the water as possible and you'll become competent in no time
>>
>>1035873
Cool. Luckily I'm in central Texas so there will be plenty of time to go out on the water
