I'm obsessed with license plates. I think it's kinda autistic. Like, all license plates. If I'm in a place that isn't my home for an extended period of time, I'll still be super excited by seeing plates of this "exotic" place every day.

Even in my hometown, I'll see plates for the surrounding states and I'll get excited. The design of the plate, the implications it gives with the location of the person driving the car, etc... I saw a Mexican plate in my hometown once and was excited about it all day.

I also collected as many of the Christmas snapchat filters as a I could last Christmas, just to have and see them all. It was... interesting.

Anyway, anyone else share my obsession? inb4 no autist go away.

also, favorite license plates thread. Pic rel is one of mine, probably not my fav tho.
>>
I use licence plates to tell what season it is, as where I live has no seasons. When I see Quebec plates, I know it's winter.

You mean Alberta? Yes I like it too. I like how Canada/US/Mexico's license plates are the more square type... i'm a sucker for designs/art on plates so the Euro ones usually leave me wanting more.

Alberta/BC/Sask's plates are nice with the mostly blank plates but a little
tasteful design thrown in (Rose, Wheat, little BC flag). Looks really clean.

I like the Polish system. I can never memorize what the initial letters stand for. But I like the details like KR for Kraków and KRA for the surroundings, and OP for Opole and OPO for the surroundings.

The pattern behind the German license plates is this:
It starts with one, two or three letters which stand for the city or district. Large cities get short signs, because they usually have more cars so there's more options on the license plate. B for Berlin, M für Munich, K for Cologne - but HH for Hamburg, because Hamburg is part of the Heanseatic league. The next biggest city with H is Hannover, so the single H goes to them.
The sparsely populated areas get the longest names, for example NWM for Nordwestmecklenburg or OPR for Ostprignitz.
You can easily tell which state the vehicle comes from by looking at the coat of arms after the abbreviation TR (for Trier). Trier lies in Rhineland-Palatine so that's where the coat of arms is from.

This is the older type, but these are still valid, so you can still see cars with these.
The first two (sometimes just one) letter means the county the car is registered in, so there were lot more combinations compared to 14 we have now. I remember that jeseník country had "J" or "JE" so there were cars with plates reading "JEB" which pretty much means "fuck."

I've learned Canadians fuckin' drive. In Glacier National Park (USA) I saw just about every Canadian plate (and US plate) but PEI, NVT and Newf/Lab. I was stoked to see a New Brunswick. Saw two Hawaii. Even saw a Hawaii on campus in Calgary yesterday.

On the transcanada you always see MB and ON driving west. That's like seeing NY and Pennsylvania plates in Montana and Washington (which you do see but not with the same frequency).

In my campus lot I see SK, MB, YK, ON, BC, QC and NS daily which is always so cool!

The only region of the US I don't see enough is the deep south. Sure, I see Florida all the time but that's due to the snowbirds. I rarely (if ever) see the carolinas, georgia, alabama, mississippi, louisiana, kentucky, tennessee, west virginia or arkansas.

You are correct. I don't know why WAF:FE is banned. Neither wikipedia nor the website of the district give a specific reason for that. They just say it is not allowed. Really, the name comes from around the turn of the 20th century. Maine used to be the hot place for America's megawealthy to summer. Portland, Belgrade Lakes, Moosehead, Acadia all hosted huge mansions to small camps for the more modest tourist. Teddy Roosevelt was a big fan of Maine. His famous Moose-riding photo was taken there. His summer home was on Campobello island, about as far east as you can go.
People took the rail from Philadelphia, New York and Boston all the way up. It's a shame, pic related is one of my favorite maps. It's from 1927, our rail system is a shadow of what it used to be. Anyway, you can see the title on it - Vacationland

>>1023134
I'm sure it's not without its charms. I get that you're proud of your state, that's great. but you're letting your pride obscure my point. that slogan is from over a century ago. it no longer applies, nor has it for the entirety of license plate use in the US. I've lived a lot of years in several US states. whenever anyone is discussing vacation plans, Maine has literally never once come up. anytime I've seen a vacation prize on a gameshow or whatever, it has NEVER been Maine. By that logic, Kansas might as well print "Surf's Up!" on their plate.

"There Was A Window Of Time When The Nation's Wealthiest Families All Lived In Large Cities In The NEC And The Cities Got Really Hot In The Summer And There Was No Air Conditioning So We Built A Pretty Good Tourist Industry For A While Because We Stay Relatively Cool Even In July" doesn't fit on a plate so well.

Hah. In Hungary, we avoided almost all embarrassing codes, but some remained, e.g. JEW, GAY, etc. In Germany, "brown" codes are also prohibited (SS, SD, etc.) - we haven't even thought about it yet, so e.g. AVH is also an existing code.
Our system started to work in 1990, and the older ones disappeared until 2000 thanks to a renumbering process, which have lasted for 10 years.

Yeah because literally the only road to Yellowknife connects to Alberta

We should have also used vocals and implemented vanity plates to be honest.

No, there is a road from BC. Highway 7. It connects with the 1 from AB around Fort Providence.

Family up in Ft. Smith sent me one of the promo plates from a while back. Need an Alberta plate for my wall.

I never seen a neonazi using "SD"
I dont think its common around those people
a play on word containing SS is more likely to use

Where do you live? I have a NWT plate like that as well, love it. Since I live in AB i could probably find an AB one too.

Not my license plate, but coincidentally the same letters and same car dealership. YE means the city of Bodo, and again, Nordvik is actually the dealership I bought my car.

I share the same level of enthusiasm, OP. I stare at license plates everywhere I go. What also Interests me is how the frequency of vanity plates changes in different states. I looked it up, and Nevada and Virginia have the highest rate at 12% while texas had only 0.5% vanity. I then looked at the DMV websites for those states and found that that cost is a major factor. It's like 300 dollars in texas to have a vanity plate for just a few years, but much cheaper in nevada, for example.

I'm also interested in Florida Plates. I live in Washington and I see Florida plates everywhere and cannot seem to find an explanation. I rarely see other southern states like georgia or south carolina. Heck, I see more florida plates than Idaho plates and that's the state next door.

I saw two cars parked next to each other the other day. One was from Mississippi and the other was Nova Scotia. Blew my mind.

Of course it isn't real.
The AVH code is similar to ÁVH, our infamous secret police in the 1950s.
