What is a good bike to buy for a four-mile commute and some weekend adventures?
I'd like to keep the price under $500, but flexing is possible if the quality is good.
any bike will do 4u

Do you have any good bikes that you'd recommend?

The best thing I got out of that thread is the bikesdirect.com link.
Is that site legitimate, or am I going to get a bike that breaks if I order from it?

You'll get a half built bike in a box, that you'll likely need to take to your LBS and have them assemble it correctly, and to make sure everything is adjusted that way it should be.
Perks of buying at a bike shop: Warranties, and you know the bike was built by people that know what they are doing.
BMC Time Machine. Ultegra will be fine- no need to go crazy.
