It's probably because their career arc leading up to Jenny Death was the most exciting artistic happening in years.

Not to mention it seemed like they were capable of anything, but after JD hindsight came into focus, and their sound became less exciting.

Don't start with this one. Start with The Money Store and Exmilitary. People like them for their strange instrumentals, angry hobo-like rapper MC Ride, Zach Hill's insane drumming, and just bizarre music in general. Probably one of the most polarizing artists to come out of the 2010s.
