Taking music further. Jazz is (or at least was) about pushing the genre further when they discovered all to be discovered in a particular style. When they craved more than Dixieland, bop was made. When playing over ii-v's was too basic, modal jazz was made. When following a set of changes without substitutions and altercations was boring, avant-garde bop was made. Free jazz just continued to take it further

meditations is a beast of a record, if you are hearing random noises, you need to listen to it more.

the soul and energy poured into the playing here is palpable, and is very memorable.

listen to the legendary series of records in this order

A Love Supreme > Meditations > Ascension > Interstellar Space

meditations is one of his best albums you fool

it is a shame that free jazz in wake of coltrane only lead the music to more niche territory. thanks to free jazz i don't think modern audiences can really know what jazz is anymore, but this is why labels like 'random fucking noise' get thrown around. good free jazz should sound like jazz imo. coltrane has that, but it helps to recognise parts of his free period as tied to his earlier career. meditations for example came after a love supreme as a sort of less accessible take. coltrane knew how to balance accessibility over experimentalism but meditations is his doing more of what he wants. you should listen to marion brown if you want to find some enjoyable free jazz
