How can an artist that was so deep in the pop/commercial game actually produce something this leftfield?
that album is commercial though, considering its genre
>>75160266
And what genre is that anon
>>75160280
Tech House.
>>75160312
So you are trying to argue that because you consider it to be tech house, it's commercial? Lmao
>>75160312
It's not tech house, it's just overproduced techno like daniel avery.
>>75160421
Well, blame rym.

Immunity is way more complex than Daniel Avery
because it's a whole album, with the singles still being accessible. most people who listen to him from a commercial perspective will never listen to immunity in whole, plus i've seen him live and in his DJ set's he just plays straight up techno throughout and doesn't explore any experimental sounds
Reminder deadmau5 was making the exact same sound years earlier and around the time of release, but you won't judge his works fairly because le edgy edm trole
>>75161134
Wasn't nearly as complex as this though. Even he was inspired by it on one of his best albums
>>75161146
Literally the only real difference sonically is Hopkins added pad synths to the background.
>>75161157
oh deadmau5 has plenty of cool pads but a lot of his stuff (especially old) really is basic
>>75161157
Try to count how many unique samples and automations there are in a Jon Hopkins song.
I really like Immunity.

t. idiot who only knows anything about music from rym
>>75160253
1. It's not in the slightest bit leftfield.
2. He was releasing electronic albums before any of those pop collaborations.
3. He was a classical pianist before all that.
4. Being into/creating disparate styles of music is nothing special.

Hopkins uses polyrhythm, interesting phrasing, extended harmony, non-standard structures - though all in a very easy to digest fashion.
Deadmau5 music is way more basic.
There's some similarities in the production/choice of sounds.
