Spculation based on what I've read ahead.

Reznor and Cornell are a long complicated story. Interscope and Soundgarden's label got into a dick measuring competition by releasing TDS and Superunknown on the same day and tried to pit them against each other. It sort of worked, but it was just a friendly rivalry. but both parties seemed to resent the other for stealing the limelight from each other.

Eventually Chris signed onto Interscope as Trent was anxious to leave it seen the writing on the wall. When what Jimmy tried to do to Trent happened to Chris Cornell, he was clearly bothered by it.

Ultimately they made up after the April Fools frank by being big men with Reznor offering an apology and Chris accepting it, with the two of them sealing it with a tour together.

The only reason it got brought up because the two of them left it in the pats and when Chris died, people assumed Trent was a bit player because cyberbullying. Reznor had to go on record and it was blown up bigger than it should have been.
