How do I get into hardware synths fuck
I want to try and find something that's reasonably powerful that I can hold onto and use for a while but that isn't crazy expensive, like the Minilogue at 500 is still too far out of my price range
Seems like everything lower than that is mono though and I would rather look for something polyphonic if possible
Is it worth looking into an Arduino/DIY build or something?
Is there a rack synth I can get and then attack to my MIDI keyboard?
please help

You need to know what sort of synth you want/want sort of sounds you want to make.
Analog components are expensive, hence a polyphonic analog is expensive.
Plenty of great, reasonably priced digital synths around.
>>75152316
It needs to work for a live setting so ideally something with a large octave range and/or MIDI input
Mostly it would probably be used for pads/chords/etc hence polyphony but maybe lead sounds also
I like the Minilogue's arpeggiator and filters a lot as well
Digital isn't a deal-breaker necessarily but mostly I just want something flexible that sounds nice
My problem is I feel like I don't know where I would look even if I knew exactly what I wanted out of the synth, what other resources are there besides just asking /prod/?

Alright how about more specifically I'm looking at my local Craigslist and the two that stick out are the Korg R3 and the Roland System-1.
Are either of those two worth following up on? They both look and sound really interesting but my biggest concern is depth and how much life I can really get out of them. The R3 doesn't look like it has a lot of options given that you just pick a voice and modify it. The System-1 is really interesting but the tiny range is throwing me off
>>75152533
There are so many options...there's not a right or wrong one.
http://www.vintagesynth.com/ might be useful for you.
>>75152894
I'd go for the System 1 over the R3 due to more hands on control but really a decent midi keyboard set up properly with softsynths will get you sounds just as good as either of those.
Sometimes it's nice not to look at a screen tho.
>>75153086
Yeah, that's what I figured. Also noticed a Microkorg XL if that changes anything. Heard a lot of great things about it but seems like the same depth problem as the R3.
The problem is that my laptop is a couple years old now and I don't really trust it not to freeze up or bug out on me in the middle of a performance if I try and make it do too many things at once.
How's Sunvox? I have an extra Raspberry Pi board sitting at home and I've seen people put together some cool builds with that.
>>75152894
Have a look at the Roland system 1m as it has semi modular (Eurorack) functions meaning you could add more modules at a later date.
I've started to DIY a euro rack modular and have filled up a84hp rack in quite a short time but I'd imagine even that will take you over you're price range. Although you could probably get something decent out of a couple of mutable instruments modules for around £500...really there's not much under that price range.
>>75153164
Sunvox is fucking ace but the learning curve is steep.
>>75153375
The dude doesn't have money for Eurorack c'mon mang.
Would appreciate feedback on this, specially the mix.

>dance?
>>75153398
I figured that but it's always an option to build on a couple of modules, or get something like a system 1m.
I dunno like I say unless you want a couple of Volcas you arnt going to get much for that kinda money unless you spend it on a laptop and a soft synth.
>>75153484
You can get a midi keyboard and a rackmount for cheap.
2nd hand TX81z for instance will cost you less than £150.
>>75153398
I can live with a steep learning curve. I'll look into it, thanks Anon
>>75153375
I've actually considered going for the modular synth + MIDI approach but I don't know a whole lot about modular synths so I'm not sure what I need to get started.
There's an ad for a bunch of modules on Craigslist (pic related) but I'm not sure if any of these will actually help me make sounds or not. Should I look into anything on here?
Is this any good or am I drunk?

Take down the reverb on some of those synths
The beginning one in particular
