Just got done stringing up with pic related on a 24.75 scale guitar. Didn't have much of a chance to fool with my guitar afterwards, and I had a damn hard time trying to rush through installing them as I was unfamiliar with the sizes.

Right off the bat, it sounds really bad. For one, my poor tuner cannot keep up with the lower pitch. And the tuning stability is terrible too. There is no sustain and it's obviously super muddy.

Maybe with enough eqing I can get something out of it? Or is downtuning to F# pointless on this scale length guitar?

Two independent phrases played along side eachother, typically one ascending and one descending, in the context of guitar, both phrases are played at the same time on the same guitar, you're only really going to hear it in bluegrass and classical music.

>it's a thing of beauty to find a guitar that physically embodies your lifestyle like that.
You are so right, my friend!

Here it is, kids: 7, 8, and 9 string guitars are the result of kids playing in their bedrooms for years and years all alone. The poor kid in this video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osaqzYuoNr4) overly technical "playing" is unfortunately just a compensation for the lack of a bass player. It's sad because the point of music is communication and the most enjoyable form of this communication is a concert (where people gather to share the musical experience). The only people who'd be interested in this kind of guitar wankery are other isolated bedroom-stuck 7, 8, and 9 string guitar troglodytes, so it's YouTube and the bedroom again, and MOM WHERE THE FUCK ARE MY HOT POCKETS?!?

Seriously though, it's a symptom of extreme social detachment, and goes right along with a lot of other unhealthy things like playing video games as an adult, masturbating to internet porn, etc. You'll also notice all these bedroom "pastimes" require a good bit of rapid hand/finger movement.

Playing music shouldn't be the equivalent of mashing buttons on a video game controller or furiously jacking your tiny dick, which is obviously what 7, 8, and 9 string guitar players believe.

All jokes aside, Annie's such a great inspiration for young female guitar players (and OMG could the music world use more female guitar players with highly technical chops like Annie!). She's so creative and innovative, not to mention easy on the eyes (hubba hubba!). She can go from smooth indie punk styling to full on Jimi Hendrix fuzz freakouts in the same song and make it all seem seamless and natural.

Amazing artist. Amazing woman.

/gg/, I have a little confession to make.

I don't know if any of you know this or not but I love John Frusciante's guitar playing. No of course you wouldn't know that, I've never been in a Guitar General before in my life! Ha ha haa this is my first time EVER! I listen to Froosh's guitar playing everyday almost! I love every aspect of it. The guy is one in a Billion with a capital "B"! The "B" probably stands for free Basing cocaine! HAA HA HA!

Take a listen and hop on the Froosh crazytrain with me! Choo choo! Here we go GG!

FROOSH! FROOSH! FROOSH! FROOSH!

LET'S TALK ABOUT FROOSH'S GUITAR PLAYING /GG/!!
>>
>>75140138
pretty sure this guy can play quite a few instruments, no reason he couldn't have made it a song and used just a normal guitar
>>
>>75139954
Definitely Stick Control. It's a fuck ton of exercises and rudiments. It's all written RLRL, LRLR, RLRRLRLL etc for the snare but you can put it all on different drums and cymbals. Stephen Taylor, Drumeo, and miscellaneous youtubers are what I use if I can't find a beat notated or can't figure out how to play it.
I was under the presumption odd times were "advanced" and hard, turns out you're just increasing and rearranging a few notes, so it's hard to tell what advanced really is.
>>
>>75141694
he's a great guitar player for sure. his playing on niandra is insane and i also really love the minimal anti hero guitar stuff and his songwriting in the late 90s and early 2000s. desu i oscillate between liking and being annoyed by his full circle guitar hero god rock thing era he was doing live with the chili peppers after stadium arcadium but yeah he's a great guitarist and was super influential even if people don't notice everybody has some froosh in their playing

What order should I learn things for BASS?

This is what I'm doing right now, been "playing" for 2 months.

>learning C Major scale, combining with different tempos, stacatto, legatto

>cross string exercise for muting, going from each string to all the others (2 plucks E->A, E->D, E->G, E->D. E->A, repeat for the other 3 strings)

>learning where the notes are on the board: going around the circle of fifths, finding all 4 locations of the note on the board each time, with 8 plucks. On metronome.

This is a mix of exercises I found on the internet.

What should I incorporate into my training?

>>75141892
I also play drums and I second this, for sure. Force through the boredom of those exercises and play all of them with a metronome, it will get you huge results. Also don't make the same mistake as me, use it for feet as well and feetxhands.

>>75143908
Also for more exercises I would recommend learning all the different ways to play an arpeggio as well as learning and memorizing a shit ton of different scales. I've reached the point where if given any major, harmonic, or melodic minor scale I could tell you what notes and play everyone of those notes as well as play their respected chords. Last I would recommend just learning a lot of songs. I did all those exercises and I got good but still had trouble in being creative. This past summer I learned over 100 songs and I earned a lot more from that than those exercises.

Are stainless steel frets a meme? I hear they last for ever and ever, but they sound brighter.
>>
>>75146326
That wouldn't change nothing.

It has been fucked up when I brought it to the liuthier after the first year for a setup, the sound changed and literally nothing restored it.

I even brought it to the Tommy Emmanuel's liuthier in Italy (they made the pick up system for its acoustic guitars) and nothing changed.

I'm thinking to sell it and buy something cheaper and fuck off, I lost almost all the interest in playing guitar.

The way I learned was to try and fully barre the 5th fret with first your index finger and middle finger pressing on top. If all the strings ring true then take off the middle finger. If it rings true still add in the first finger of the E shape barre chord. Repeat until all fingers are added. Keep practising the stage that does not ring true until it does.

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR RIGHT HAND

All jokes aside, a good friend of mine is a great guitarist. He's a lefty but had to learn the "normal" way because he couldn't afford a guitar, and the only guitar at his place was from his cunt older brother.
I also know saw an amazing guitarist who played left handed but the strings where all in the "normal" order. Like the bottom E would now be on top etc.
Maybe the way we learn the instrument is independent from being left or right handed.

>At least in terms of body motion, hence the right hand.

Strumming patterns are piss easy, imo. The hard part is actually strumming only the strings you want, thus the accuracy. I can strum loose strings for a pattern I just heard in a song, but hitting the right notes is much harder.
>>
>>75147685
Yeah everywhere in the world, even Gibson's own fucking website, is showing a Chinese knock off of the guitar, it's not that you're wrong. No you could never be wrong, literally everybody else is wrong, not you!

>>
>>75147623
Sounds awful. I have yet to join a band because of this. Normies only enjoy the "fun" of music. They don't care about making beautiful, meaningful, art.

You should keep gigging for the experience and money but you should work on your own stuff when you can and leave when you have another group ready.
>>
>>75147737
That makes no sense.

>>

>>
>>75147799
Me neither.

What I was saying is that the pattern (up, down, up, up, down, down, whatever) is very easy to pick up from listening, even with muting and with different time signatures. The hard part is having to strum only 3 strings on certain strums, specially when you cannot mute the other ones, for example. Kinda like picking while strumming.

Fuck me lads I got kicked out of the band
We took a break in March because our bass player and trombonist both moved, and the plan was to get back together after summer and replace them.
Then they decided to push it up a month and then have an audition for all the instruments, just for shows sake they said, and they asked me if they could have it at my place since I have a drum kit that's in great shape and amps and stuff.
And now afterwards they've kicked me out, or as they say "I didn't make the cut", and they replaced me with the pianists best friend who can literally only play the pentatonic without tabs
I feel like shit now, I haven't even picked up my guitar today

sorry for blogposting but can someone give me some inspo so I can at least pick up my guitar again thanks
>>
>>75148062

>>
>>75148062
You must suck ass if you can't even beat a guy who can only play the pentatonic. Just git gud faggot. The guitar is like the Dark Souls of instruments so you just gotta keep on trying.
>>
>>75148243
I could try starting a band of my own, but I'd need a bass player, another guitarist, a pianist, two trumpets, a trombone, a saxophone, a flute, two violinists and a drummer to make it work with the arrangements I've written

I've put a lot of effort into it man, all the stuff I've written was based on that 12 man group.

>>
>>75148339

If the songs are good you should be able to dumb down the arrangement. Or how about writing some songs for solo guitar? That's what I'm doing. Thoughts about cedar-topped acoustics?

I really like how they sound, but their softness worries me. A lot of times when I strum, I'll pound of the bridge to get a more percussive sound (think Neil Young and Steven Stills), and I feel like that would eventually just kill a cedar top. I mean, Glen Hansard and Willie Nelson have worn holes in their tops from normal playing, and a few prominent makers have stopped using cedar because of structural concerns. I'd rather not have my bridge completely collapse, or some other kind of implosion happen, after a few years. Am I just being paranoid, or is it a serious worry for a playing style that isn't easy on bridges?

Depends man. How long is the song? Which chords? Is the melody all the same, or does it switch up? Are the lyrics interesting?

I recommend listening to Shelter From the Storm by Bob Dylan, that's a good two chord song. Also Heroin by the Velvet Underground, they do a lot with two chords
>>
>>75159462
I'll be honest, it's probably shitty since I don't have much experience writing songs. The melody pretty much stays the same so far. The lyrics are probably trash too, but I'm honestly not sure how to write great lyrics.
>>
>>75159462
>Shelter From the Storm by Bob Dylan, that's a good two chord song.
Except it uses three chords.

But yeah, plenty of songs get away with two chords. Roadrunner by the Modern Lovers is a pretty good example of a long-ish two-chord song. There are also a bunch of "unreleased" Neutral Milk Hotel songs that are all A and D; Jeff Mangum used to play them all as a suite live.

I got into him kind of early on in my playing (after a few years) and I feel like he's an endless wellspring of phrasing, technique, etc. I may never play as fast as he does but for me the best thing about GG is that he always looks like he's having a great time playing the guitar because it's such an extension of himself (I think Steve Vai is the only player I know of who compares) and that's the kind of relationship I want with music.

Probably the biggest differences are in the size of the neck (classical/flamenco guitar fretboards are wider), the feel of the strings (esp. if you opt to go finger style), and the sound (nylon strings are much "warmer"-sounding, and more subdued than steel strings). I have a nylon string and I prefer it to steel string guitars: it just seems to be a more versatile instrument and people always comment on how pretty it sounds.

Damn those Troy Grady videos are really doing a number on wannabe shredders, aren't they?

I really don't get the obsession with things like picking technique, and it seems like most of the world's top guitarists don't pay much attention to it either. If you play long enough, your hands will eventually economize their motion so you will be able to play most lines without much difficulty. My whole picking technique is literally just "pick from the wrist, keep fingers curled inward" which I guess is sometimes referred to as having a "floating hand" approach? Then you've got a guy like Marty Friedman who plays some pretty cool stuff with what looks like the gimpiest right hand in the world...

If you could only own one pedal what would it be?

I really like teles but playing one at the shop today made me realize the bridge is kinda fucking annoying to play with, felt like i was gonna cut my hand off
>>
>>75160851
>felt like i was gonna cut my hand off
You were playing one with a vintage style bridge. There are a ton of different designs for Tele bridges; all of the "modern" ones don't have those raised parts on the sides.

Thoughts on 2018 Gibson line?
>>
>>75161747
Meh.

At least they don't have twelve version of every guitar, like Fender. Though there are still too many Les Pauls.
>>
>>75162031
Navigating Fender's website is a fucking nightmare. I don't get how they can have such a bloated lineup with so little worth looking at. HERE'S A GUITAR WITH BASIC FEATURES AND A GARBAGE POLY FINISH. $1700.

New SG specials look pretty solid, natural finish is a nice change.

That's pretty much how I feel about Fender at the moment.

Standard, Special, Professional, Elite, Custom?

Just have one basic version, and one with all the modern trimmings. Done.

kind of want that es-275 custom desu. Too expensive for a plywood guitar with a richlite fretboard though.
>>
>>75162248
And stop with the poly finishes. I don't want a guitar that looks like a lego and doesn't age. At least make nitro an option on higher end models.
>>
>>75162305
wow I thought you were kidding but it's literally fuckin plywood lmao

I think 7 is acceptable, but 8 is definitely less practical and 9 is just dumb.
>>
um is it really possible that I can buy an acoustic guitar for just 140 dollars that also includes a gig bag? https://www.amazon.com/Fender-Acoustic-Strings-Instructional-Polishing/dp/B0092V7WJ0/ref=sr_1_5?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1505473577&sr=1-5&keywords=guitar

I'm assuming acoustic is the best to start with since I could just use electric later?
>>
>>75162463
It's not a big deal, ES-335s and Es-175s are plywood too, they sound good it's just the price that's retarded.

My Malekko lofi delay, probably. I like to keep the time short on mine for a chorus-like effect or for a slapback reverb, then extend it for typical delays, and even more for the wonky shit
