Limited pressing of population override by buckethead
>>
Mostly I just get stuff if it's cheap, or never been reissued (which is thousands of records)

Buying new records for twenty+ bucks makes no sense to me

I'm not at home but I have the original cover edition of Slippery When Wet. Also the Lynyrd Skynyrd album with the fire on it.

Yes, got about 400 LP/12'' but i have some really rare stuff there. Plus got about 100+ 7' with lots of funk, rock and soul. Mostly collect old obscure stuff thats rare or obscure. The newest one i have is Madlib - Shades Of Blue, European pressing.

Buy used vinyl, most record in vg comdition are like $6 or less. I picked up rumors by fleetwood for like 7 i think

>>

really? i can never find stuff i want on there for less thgan $10 before shipping
>>
>>75129005
depends what you're looking for I guess, I got a great copy of brothers in arms for like $8
if you're looking at reissues then they're gonna be like $20+
>>
>>75128797
can i trust the condition on discogs? if it says VG will it actually be very good?
>>
>>75129088
you can trust that vg+ really is vg+ and vg really is vg and so on, but you should look up, what each conditions means. i think you can also do that on the website
>>
>>75129088
yeah I've always had great luck looking on discogs, although I tend to buy new stuff if I can just to be safe unless I absolutely can't buy a new copy or it's outrageous in price
>>
>>75129088
depends on the seller, you can also check on their feedback. also doesn't hurt to message the seller for pictures if you're concerned
>>
>>75129005
discogs is only good if you live in america, i'm a britbong and it's not all that cheap here
>>
>>75127814
I've been collecting for about 2 1/2 years, started with a good pile of stuff from my Dad's old collection, built up just over 300 records so far.

Its a fun hobby, honestly I mostly picked it up because I love going to the record store with friends/family who are also into it, its like a day out. Go to the record store, get one or two cool finds, come back home and listen to them.
>>
>>75128727
all that new-pressed.... must've costed you a fortune
you should look into getting CTTE and Fragile original pressed. They go for way cheaper and sound better. I got my copy of CTTE for 8 bucks.

>>
Hey can help me with something. I bought these 2 punk records and they are US pressing and I have UK record player but they don't seem to play at the right speed. They are both to be played at 45rpm but they both just sound slightly too slow. What's the deal?
>>
>>75131492
Do you have manual speed adjustment?
>>
>>75131535
Nah only a button to select between 45 and 33
>>
>>75131033
Depends. I want a copy of Duster's Stratosphere but one only crops up on Discogs every couple of months for like $200. Don't think I ever paid more than like $40 for record and those were 2XLPs
>>
>>75127894
buckethead comes out with a new LP every week
not that interesting
>>
>>75129088
As long as you know those terms are euphemisms. I wouldn't recommend grabbing a disc that is under EX-, VG covers are personal preference I guess, just ask for photos.

If it's worth it to you. I have spent weird amounts on certain records and it all boils down to whether you want it that bad, how likely you are to see it again, whether it's pure gouging (you could maybe message the guy if the there's no offer option, sometimes it works to lower the price), etc. In the last couple years I've bought a NMH boxset for 125, Bibio - Fi for 55 (before the repress), an old record of Timothy Leary talking about LSD for 40, two Hot Fuss bootlegs for 65. You don't even wanna know how much I spent on Exmilitary when I first started collecting. But I've also sold a good number for 100 bucks or more, so it all depends. Usually my instinct tells me to just do it.

>>
Question: do you buy cheap, old 50s through 80s records for the quantity and varying quality or do you buy modern, more expensive reissues and recent releases?

I've gotten more into scowering through the bottom bins of my local record shop for things that look neat. I'd rather get 5 or 6 older albums than 1 newer one for the same price
>>
>>75132721
if the album came out before 1990 I'll tend to go for the original pressing, even if its more expensive, although 99% of the time its not

pressing technology has come a very far way. When an album is remastered, it's typically being overseen by the artist themselves. Take King Crimson's Red for example or even Led Zeppelin's BBC sessions. Both Robert Fripp and Jimmy Page oversaw the remastering process of each release. If Fripp or Page says "yep, that sounds fucking dope", then it's objectively the best release. Let that marinate in your brain for a few minutes.
I bought the Slint Spiderland reissue (because I'm not a fucking idiot) and it sounds SUPREME.

Most, but not all. Just like what the other anon said, vinyl reissues supervised by the artists are pretty much guaranteed to be excellent, if not better than the original, and so are recordings mastered by competent engineers and such, instead of run-of-the-mill in-house cutters. Just a matter of researching.

>tfw when did this with 2 8 4 1
Dont really like it, will sell it. Its not really that big of a deal, I mean its appealing to know that its worth money. The pre orders went up on ebay for like 300 right?

Either way if you find yourself buying too much, put a monthly limit on yourself, or make a list of your vinyls and make sure you are actually listening to them regularly instead of them just sitting on the shelf serving no purpose
>>
>>75138262
>The pre orders went up on ebay for like 300 right?
Yeah, but OESBee issued a statement saying they'd be doing enough pressings that people wouldn't have to rely on extortionate scalper prices on discogs/ebay. I don't believe that for a second though, no indie label like OESBee is gonna be able to produce enough wax to devalue scalpers. Even if I can't flip it for 300, I expect to at least be able to get twice what I paid. People seem to go apeshit for that album, I don't understand it.

the 2814 and 新しい日の誕生 double album. I mean its chill music but if I can make that kind of cash I'm not all that attached to it. Although, I def see the appeal as a piece of musical history. I mean Floral Shoppe literally spawned its own meme genre

Naw, just enjoying my work while i'm there. I'll miss the job and the discounts + learning so much about records when I leave soon, but bigger fish to fry and all that

I really don't think the price of new is too bad unless you're on some 3LP deluxe set type shit. Most smaller acts keep their things priced pretty reasonably. One of my favorite LPs of the year is about 16 bucks brand new
>>
>>75139986
Maybe its just where I live (Los Angeles) but the average new single LP is around $22-25

And yeah, I didn't mean as a 20-30+ year gig, but working in a record store for a while in your youth and getting sweet deals and life experience is the dream for a lotta guys.
>>
My local store is so picked through I'm amazed I'm able to find anything at all.
>>
My most valuable item is a sealed, original pressing of Exmilitary. Next most valuable is probably a 7" purple RSD release of Artic Monkey's "R U Mine"

I'm interested, but so far unsold on vinyl. I've heard a tiny bit of the vinyl gets destroyed with each play, is this true? What can I get from vinyl that I can't get from a digital format, beyond owning a physical copy? Also, are genres outside of rock, jazz and disco on vinyl? Can I get my favorite artists on vinyl, or is it just the basic styles of music that get placed on the format? Sell me on vinyl, /mu/.

>I've heard a tiny bit of the vinyl gets destroyed with each play, is this true?
the tiniest, most miniscule amount
you would have to play a record literally non-stop for months, maybe years, before you noticed the quality degradation

>What can I get from vinyl that I can't get from a digital format, beyond owning a physical copy?
pretty much owning a physical copy, having the art in 12" print and the tactile ritual of unsleeving the record and prepping it for play if that's your jam
if not, that's your deal man, you do you

>Also, are genres outside of rock, jazz and disco on vinyl?
virtually every genre exists on vinyl, there are two stores near me that specialize in techno/EDM shit

>Can I get my favorite artists on vinyl
who are your favorite artists? need more to go on to answer that one bud

>or is it just the basic styles of music that get placed on the format?
I don't know what you mean by this

>Sell me on vinyl, /mu/
no
I'm not a marketer, just a dude who likes records, I'll answer your questions but it's up to you to decide if you wanna take the leap and start buying physical
>>
does anyone have experience with shipping records? i've amassed way to many records that I don't really want anymore and i kinda got screwed when i sold a couple back to a record store, rather sell on discogs. im not sure where to get those record mailers other than online. also if there's anything to know about keeping shipping costs as low as possible.
>>
>>75141589
can't really help with the rest of your post but I can answer this
>also if there's anything to know about keeping shipping costs as low as possible
yes, charge them the full amount for shipping
>>

If you use a decent turntable (not a cheap suitcase record player) and take good care of your records, they'll probably last around 1000 playbacks until sound degradation starts happening. Which is basically a lifetime.
>What can I get from vinyl that I can't get from a digital format, beyond owning a physical copy?
The appeal to vinyl is very subjective imo, which basically is not the same for everyone, but for me, the "vinyl experience/ritual" and all that, putting the needle on the record and chilling while listening to it, and the package makes it all worth it. If you're still skeptical about it, I'd recommend not diving into vinyl right now.
>Also, are genres outside of rock, jazz and disco on vinyl?
Electronic is great on vinyl (inb4 >le digital music on vinyls lol xddddd)
>Can I get my favorite artists on vinyl, or is it just the basic styles of music that get placed on the format?

I've been using an LP60 for a few years now. It seems fine. No complaints. Should I upgrade?
>>
>>75142073
If you got the money and really like vinyl upgrading to a 120 wouldn't be a bad idea. I'd say wait and see if you can find a good deal on a secondhand one. If you hunt around and be patient you could probably get a good deal on one from a local record/secondhand/electronics store. Technics, Onkyo, Pioneer, and Rega are good brands to look for but if it's got a counterweight it's probably good.
>>
>>75142230
Alright, thanks dude. Solid advice.
I've been meaning to look into upgrading for a while, but I've heard the LP60 pretty heavily slated around here since I bought it a few years back and I've been pretty confused by it every time because all the research I did beforehand said there was nothing wrong with it as a starter table and it's been absolutely fine so far without putting so much as a scratch on my records.
What would the benefits of shelling out for a better turntable be? What can I actually expect for the money?
>>
Don't collect vinyl, collect CDs. Have over 360 CDs

Only own four vinyl records (three of them are Death Grips - Bottomless Pit in yellow) and my 4th one is Golf Instructions by Arnold Palmer. One of my favorite physical mediums I own

>What would the benefits of shelling out for a better turntable be? What can I actually expect for the money?
Pretty much the fact you can adjust VTA, anti-skating, capability of swapping cartridges etc. for best sound and be gentler on your records.

I prefer used stuff anyway. As long as the condition isn't fucking horrible. I actually like the pops and wear, gives it character, which is the whole reason to use vinyl in the first place, for me, anyway.

I want to get a better system, though. I have a player with a built in amp and okayish speakers I got for like $70 on sale (originally like a $150 setup I think) but I want to put together something kinda nice for a few hundred. And I need to find a shelf at a thrift store or something that doesn't break the bank.

Got this at a local record store a couple days ago. It's an unofficial release of leaked Nirvana demos and outtakes on yellow vinyl. Side A from Nevermind era, Side B from In Utero. Banned on discogs so that's cool

Just picked up a nice lot of 45s for $40 off of Craigslist. Close to 500 records in total. Found some gold, mostly really rare northern soul and white label promos. Gonna make a killing flipping these.

I've started about a year ago, when I moved into my own place and had the space to put together a new shelf, get some standing speakers, etc.

I like collecting vinyl as a supplement to the rest of my place and habits which is mostly all digital now; I have Sonos connected amps/soundbar, but a turntable so I can hear a record all through my house. I buy new records, since I don't see much point in CDs, since they come with download codes and makes it easy.

I definitely wish the area I was in had more in the way of old records to go and find, but for now I'm satisfying myself by grabbing any current issued versions of my favourite albums, special releases, etc. Helps that I work somewhere that stocks new releases.

Few favourite things I've tracked down or got recently:
>the NMH complete works box set, wonderful to have it all in one place
>Watain's "The Wild Hunt" special box, cool reissue of an old demo and and some other bits and pieces
>3LP extended version of Boris' "Pink", fuck me this whole thing goes so hard
>mewithoutYou's whole discog minus one album, the reissued their first album and EP recently
>Neurosis' reissues are fantastic, super heavy duty covers and great new artwork, picked up my 4 favourite
>recently also finished my collection of Nick Cave records, my fave artist, have every Bad Seeds/Birthday Party recording ever put on vinyl as far as I can tell

Gear is an AT LP-5, and some Dali Zensors as primary speakers.

Part of the appeal for me is that it's really the only way to physically own music media that makes any sense, at least in my eyes.

I mean, it supports the artist in some way, you get the most physical form of music you can really buy. Why pay for digital, or even a CD when a record comes with a code anyway? That's my thinking at least.

>What records are you guys trying to get a hold of?

I really wan to finish my set of Gorillaz with that nice red Demon Days pressing but people are asking too much for it, maybe at some point.

Also need to pick up a copy of QoTSA's Era Vulgaris and SFTD, got the limited version of Villains and loved the prints (might hang a couple) and now want to go get the rest.

I've been collecting for about 12 years now, prety much as soon as I got into music I started picking up vinyl as the main physical format for albums. According to Discogs I currently have 255 LP's/12"s, 114 7"s and 17 10"s. In recent years I've done ocasional purges of records and got rid of a lot of the shit that I used to pick up in bargain bins and thrift stores. I realised I was filling shelves with battered crap and was never listening to it anyway. I used to always buy the more random/"limited" albums so would never actually have the albums I want to listen to by a specific band. I now mainly focus on getting the actual good "canon" albums by bands even if it means buying much less records than before. Last 10 or so records bought were these:

Flower Travellin Band - Anywhere
GNOD - Just Say No To The Psycho Right-Wing Capitalist Fascist Industrial Death Machine
Grails - Doomsdayer's Holiday
Mark Leckey - Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore
Gauze - Gauze (Bootleg compilation)
James Ferraro - Clear
American Football - American Football 2xLP Red Deluxe
MBV - Loveless (Bootleg)
Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica
Kamasi Washington - The Epic 3xLP
Ride - Nowhere 2xLP Limited Edition
Asva - What You Don't Know Is Frontier 2xLP
