Hello /mu/, quick question:
Is "Musical" a genre of music?
And if so, is every song in a musical part of that genre?
If not, could you make examples of what genres in musicals such as Fiddler, Poto and Les Mis are?
Thanks!
bumb
I consider it a soundtrack. Musical is a genre of film or play.
"Showtunes" is the term used for songs from traditional musicals, and broadly describes a genre. Closely related to traditional pop and tin pan alley, not to mention jazz (many standards are showtunes).
But the "genre" is also heavily derivative on existing styles, so there's not always a precise distinction between a showtune and its influences, in terms of genres.

I see, thank you anon.
So if we were to talk about Hamilton, what would the genre be? Rap? Showtune? Showtune-Rap?
Would it be false to call Hamilton music "showtune" or is it merely a matter of opinion?

I think you could go many ways classifying Hamilton. It goes past my associations with "show tunes" musically speaking, but it's also a direct ancestor of the traditional genre.
