He had all of those things at different points, though. He just had severe depression and the lackluster reception his albums got made that a lot worse because he felt like he was putting a lot of himself out there and people were rejecting it.

If you haven't, pick up that book his estate put out a couple of year ago. His dad started keeping a journal of how Nick was doing his last couple of years, and most of it is reprinted. It's a very sad read; you get the impression that he was very desperate and kept trying to find something to focus on, but kept failing.
