i used to be a proghead and when i first heard this album i hated it. after getting into some more modern industrial music however, i came back to it with a lot more appreciation. try and understand the genre a bit and look into other artists, then come back to it.

The whole thing is a concept album of self destruction, that is not the only reason why I like it, but having been able to relate to many parts of this is what makes me love it so much. The overlapping lyrics in many parts along with the cascading noise and the mildly experimental and chaotic sounds and beats like in Piggy. Maybe it just isn't something for you to enjoy.

Pretty much anyone. Trent is unironically a musical genius, he's pretty much two decades ahead of his time, all the time. The most influential white musician of his generation.

Honestly I'm not crazy about his songwriting, I find his lyrics to be on-the-nose to the point of embarrassment, but the music is just so fucking good that it's almost always worth it.
>>
A normie on a rough patch. You're depressed but from something that's not too severe like going through a college breakup, or not doing well on an exam.

You just want something visceral but not too dark.

Aaah, yes, Big Man With A Gun, Hurt, The Becoming, the entirety concept of the album.
Yep this is just sad, not actual depression at all.
>>
>>75095224
That shit's just sad, and those lyrics are so goofy they might make the person actually chuckle.

>GOT ME A BIG OLD DICK AND I LIKE TO HAVE FUN
>>
>>75095224
I think what he meant is music that's depressing but with catchy hooks.
>>
>>75095261
In the story the protagonist goes crazy and rapes someone, these are words of someone who has gone crazy and gone mad with power.
>>75095294
It still isn't something "sadness with rough path" just look at The Becoming, Eraser, its title track or "Hurt", the album may have hooks but that doesn't mean that it is a cheap record like XXX's recent output. I think the album tackles the feeling of depression pretty well, especially at The Becoming.
>>
>>75095019
I think people don't give Trent's songwritting/lyrics enough credit.
This is the guy who wrote "Hurt" after all. I like his blunt song-writting, sometimes it doesn't 100% work, but when it does, it fucking works, and I think most of the time it does.
>>
>>75095394
>In the story the protagonist goes crazy and rapes someone, these are words of someone who has gone crazy and gone mad with power.

That only makes it edgier. That's Shadow the Hedgehog-tier edgy. A grown ass adult full of melancholy and depression due to trying to pay the bills and trying to give their children the best life they can is just going to laugh at that ultra edge. Like I said, NIN's music is for people that don't know how deep depression goes, it goes much deeper than that surface edgy shit.
>>
>>75095434
>Like I said, NIN's music is for people that don't know how deep depression goes
You obviously have never listened to The Fragile or inspected this record further. If you think NIN is only edgy shit you simply haven't gotten deeper in it.
>>
>>75095506
>The Fragile
She shines
In a world full of ugliness
She matters when everything is meaningless
Fragile
She doesn't see her beauty
She tries to get away
Sometimes
It's just that nothing seems worth saving
I can't watch her slip away
I won't let you fall apart
She reads the minds of all the people as they pass her by
Hoping someone can see
If I could fix myself I'd - but it's too late for me
I wont let you fall apart

So far it's the same teenage sentiments. That's not for an adult dealing with adult issues or someone dealing from absolute grief after losing someone special from Cancer. It just feels so sophomoric dude. Feel free to listen to it if you want, but that's my opinion.
>>
>>75095434
The album goes deeper as well. It's just a small part of the story.
Also these lyrics aren't for people full of melancholy and with families.
>>
>>75095658
>Also these lyrics aren't for people full of melancholy and with families.
So basically what I said in the beginning
>>
>>75095550
>Picks one track from a double- concept album
I was reffering to the album as a whole, not one track.
If you want "depression" NIN tracks look towards the track like
>La Mer
>Leaving Hope
>Even Deeper
>The Big Come Down
>Ripe (With Decay)

>That's not for an adult dealing with adult issues or someone dealing from absolute grief after losing someone special from Cancer

It seems like you are directing me to specific albums you yourself consider to be somehow more "real" about depression. As if there is only one way to describe a depression somehow.
It is strange you are directing me to "losing someone from cancer" when depression doesn't have to come from a lost of a loved one, depresion, just is, you can feel like absolute shit for no reason.

The Fragile and The Downward Spiral both deal with..
>Self-destruction
>Emptiness
>Hollowness, starting to feel like you are not existing and you are fading away, the depression is eating you alive and the person that was there doesn't exist anymore

>>75095710
Again, you think that only your intepration of depression is real.

>>
>>75095550
>That's not for an adult dealing with adult issues or someone dealing from absolute grief after losing someone special from Cancer

What you are describing isn't depression
>Adult issues
Depression resides in any age, what are adult issues? Having a family? How is this depression?
>absolute grief after losing someone special from Cancer
Yes, that's grief, not depression. Depression can be created from losing someone if the grief goes on for a very long time and doesn't stop, but this isn't depression.

You don't actually know waht depression is, do you?
>>
>>75095710
Yeah but the album goes deep into a mind of someone who gets more and more fucked up. It's upfront in expressing feelings and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
>>
>>75095811
Not everyone is autistic like you
>>
>>75095875
>Ignores instrumentals
>Ignores production
>Focuses solely on the lyrics
You are supposed to focus on the song as a whole.
>>
>>75095724
I said MY OPINION for a reason. Calm down, honestly. Am I not allowed to write about my own interpretation and what works in my opinion?
>>
>>75095923
I am calm anon, when you put an opinion forward it is open to criticism and questioning.
>>
>>75095825
You're just being anal about semantics, try to ask any psychologist if grief is that different from depression. learn to read too, I mentioned adult issues not only just having a family. If you have an argument, try to construct it better than this.
>>
>>75095944
It is, but it is dishonest of you to say that I only think my interpretation is real, when I already told you you're free to listen to it for any reason here >>75095550
>>
>>75095989
I will admit to that, I am sorry, perhaps I felt like I was personally attacked as I was diagnosed with depression and I've been fighting it for longs periods of time and these albums were(still are) a huge coping mechanism for me, so I felt like I was being personally attacked which was immature of me.
I am sorry anon, I respect your opinion, I just love these records too much.
>>
>>75096024
don't say sorry, it's really not that serious. i just like to discuss this stuff--and i'm drunk af not going to lie, so I am acting way edgier myself. I just felt that this kind of music wasn't "enough" for me, I don't know how to explain it. I lost my dad, chunks of my life started derailing and I feel no one understands me(I know, that sounds cliche)

I hope you find happiness tho. Everyone has their own coping mechanism in the end, and there's no law governing what's true depression music.

also industrial grew a lot from the 'rust belt' of the US...at the time an area with high unemployment and tons of abandoned steel factories. People would commonly hang in these old factories and the 'rough and tough' scene went along with it. Industrial music scene there was influenced by teen angst + those old factories. They sampled sounds there and used photos of machines and chains for album covers. The imagery of those abandoned factories naturally pair well with BDSM culture.
