I'll bump this for interest.

There's quite a few shit threads, but also quite a few good ones. Tonight's vibe, and saturday nights seem pretty representative of the place in general, seems to be balanced between meme focused and music focused. The favourite moments from an album thread is good, the gear and production threads are good, active sharethread chains are good. "post an album that's tracks equal the number of times youve shat in the last 3 days" would rank with any thread starter I've ever seen here. And the (probably old) "Kevin is known to be THE most hung guy in shoegaze" pasta is very fucking good.

On balance, it's pretty good tonight.

I just want to start talking about this board, though it is certainly not a problem that is unique to this board.

This board dates back to like 2004, which is even before my time. Between whenever in 2004 and 2009, as you can see in some of these screencaps, there were around 6 million posts, total, on this board. In the eight years since, there have been another 69 million.

Normally, an increase in population means an increase in interesting things, especially in a weirdo place like this. When it started to pick up, I was generally supportive of the development. But I was assuming, incorrectly, that the new people would see this place as we did when we first found it.

I first came to 4chan in 2007. It was the wild west, but a self-selected wild west. Most had come from anime or anime-adjacent interests. I was told about this place by a weirdo anime guy I knew who had his ear to the ground. In 2007, this place certainly wasn't groundbreaking anymore, but it was a relatively small community.

Smallness manifests itself in a few ways. Things linger. You have time to process them. Lurk moar was the philosophy. Shut up. Listen. You might learn something.

And smallness means that you know who you are and what you are doing. You aren't fooling yourself. There's a reason tripfags were called tripfags, they were trying to make a name on an forum that was anonymous in both practice and effect. It was only the posts that mattered.

The purity in old memes is a byproduct of creating them solely for the 20 people who would see them and appreciate it. There's no point in being ironic because you and a limited group of other people have found this little free clubhouse and there is no need to be above anything. You can be honest and appreciate things as they are.

It was true on /mu/, and it was true on /sp/, and it was true on many of the minor boards. /r9k/ was brilliant when it first came out. To steal from Bunk from The Wire, we had us a community.

But when this site became popular, people came to it expecting something. Vulgarity, gore, racism, raids, whatever. Those things had existed here but they were the product of small scale people with small scale intentions having a laugh in safety with people they trusted. Online was online. But the acts themselves became the draw rather than the experience of like minds.

The influx to this site used to be that people invade /b/, and then they either quit in disgust, or filter out into the minor boards depending on their interests and the spirit of community on the boards. /b/ was chaos, how could it exist as a philosophy? How was it something? It was expression, it was a method, it was a display of how people act in waves. But to me, and I would say to most people of my vintage, it wasn't practical. It provided nothing lasting.

People started coming here for that chaos. It stopped being the chaos of like minds and instead became the chaos of large masses of people. And by definition, large masses of people are not weirdos anymore, but just regular people, with regular interests, regular anxieties, and regular prejudices.

The joy of the internet is discovering that you can find other weirdos who share your sensibilities and interests and philosophies. But someday your shit gets gentrified, and you are deposed by the plastic people who you have unknowingly cleared the path for.

It was really a miracle that various parts of this site lasted as long as they did, and some small corners still do. The pioneers have mostly been cleaned out, and they did not find anywhere as fitting ever again. Many just reside in interest ghettos on reddit. Some made it to Twitter, especially weird twitter. A lot have just disappeared.

But, you know, whatever. I try not to think about it, because it really hurts. To have that camaraderie with people you don't know and have never met. And you just all blow away into the wind, and watch as your home is hollowed out and corporatized, fixed into place. Or like a relative who has been ravaged by dementia, a stranger inside a familiar figure.

/diy/ is just one thread and I'm not able to create discussion outside of that general. I made two threads about fashion week. One got no replies and the other got 1 waifufag shitpost. I made a thread about the problems in fashion journalism and the question whether fashion is art, but that did not kick of either. Barely 0 replies. Tried to get people fired up about sharing mags, like the storytimes on /co/, but no luck either. That has to do with the fact that the majority of posters there are teenagers. No knowledge and no experience. Certain topics can't be discussed. There's no interest either. Feel so lonely man.

I have some thread in a word doc where people wanted to create a guide on how to discuss music.

I find myself seeking the more wholesome areas of 4chan these days, and there are still some gems left.
/fa/ has rare moments of brilliance. My favorite threads are the japanese /out/ threads: there's a guy that shared a huge google drive full of jap mag scans like go out, there's a lot of genuine appreciation for garments and style, and it feels independent of the social recognition rat race. There was an architecture thread a few weeks ago, and a guy was posting his own pictures of buildings in Spain. A recent dark fashion general with really interesting discussion on small designers. The sleaze thread from two weeks ago had really good movie recs (lots of Cassavetes) and felt concept-driven. . . . I still remember poet.
I'm in love with /out/. That board has really blossomed. I think a lot of it is due to the Leave no trace philosophy inherent in the hobby.
Surprisingly, if you sift through the overwhelming shit and porn, /b/ has some weirdly good threads. I used to check on it when working graveyard shift. On one hand a discussion with a schizophrenic where I tried to get him to explain how he felt, on the other good old space program. I think /b/ is sort of an underdog again. You have to wonder who the fuck actually goes there to have a good thread.

I quit /mu/ after the NLDW ARG. At that point the rest of the board was 70% tripfag drama, and tripfags making threads as anon like "rank your favorite tripfags" and it was so far gone from the feeling of awe and discovery I first had when I stumbled here as a teen. Glad I happened to visit when this thread was up.
